“The Japanese version of Rampart uniquely employs a medieval theme, so while it borrows the North American logo, the bespoke artwork features heroic, anime-inspired characters and an attacking dragon.” As featured in our book - Game Boy: The Box Art Collection:… Show more

#FPS 80/180ish is Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield (2003) The last of the Rainbow Six games to include pre-planning, there’s nothing more satisfying than having your AI team nail a plan and save your life (or infuriating when they slapstick opening a door and all die).

#FPS 79/180ish is Star Trek: Elite Force II (2003) Despite a tight deadline, 9/11 meant the game’s original terrorism-based plot had to be reworked. Still, this is a sharp, Quake III powered shooter. Unfortunately it didn’t sell, causing Activision and Viacom to sue each other.

#FPS 78/180ish is Chex Quest 3 (2008) 12 years after the first game tripled sales of Chex cereal, several original developers released a free ZDoom sequel. Triggers instant nostalgia for both DOOM and, thanks to its ‘real world’ environments and comical posters, Duke Nukem 3D.

#FPS 77/180ish is Haze (2008) Free Radical abandoned their irreverent style to make a 'serious' shooter, but still tried to do something interesting. Haze was undermined by politics, technology and odd decisions, so despite (or because of) the early hype it reviewed poorly.

#FPS 76/180ish is Call of Duty (2003) Initially named ‘MOH killer’, Activision more than achieved their goal of beating EA's Medal of Honor. Infinity Ward’s squad-based approach was designed to make you feel like a soldier in the war, not just be playing against a WWII backdrop.

#FPS 75/180ish is Legendary (2008) Spark Unlimited’s second game of 2008, Legendary also reviewed averagely. But while undeniably clunky it’s easy to get swept along by its b-movie, heavily scripted rollercoaster ride, and it’s nice to be back to shooting monsters for a change.

I’ve seen some of Bitmap Books’ early page designs for the run ‘n’ gun history book I’ve written, and they’re looking incredible. The book has making-ofs, gameplay tips and breakdowns for over 300 games in the genre. I’m really excited to reveal this one 😅 #gaming #games

#FPS 71/180ish is Soldier of Fortune: Payback (2007) Made by the Chaser team, not Raven, Payback is dragged down by baffling design decisions (example, simply moving forwards when the game starts gets you instantly killed by an RPG). Even manages to mess up the dismemberments.

#FPS 72/180ish is 007: Quantum of Solace (2008) Short and uneven, but made in just nine months and with no film script so it’s remarkable it was released at all. Uses the Call of Duty tech so combat feels great, helped by both you and enemies dying in just a couple of hits.
