noun
historicalOriginally: any of the large fossil amphibians of the (ill-defined) genus Labyrinthodon (probably equivalent to the temnospondyl genus Mastodonsaurus), regarded as the typical form of labyrinthodont; (in form Labyrinthodon) the genus itself. In later use: = "labyrinthodont".
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Richard Owen (1804–1892), comparative anatomist and palaeontologist. From scientific Latin Labyrinthodon, former genus name from ancient Greek λαβύρινθος + ὀδοντ-, ὀδούς tooth; compare note at glyptodon.
