It’s Spring Training, Charlie Brown is the 35th
Peanuts and it aired on January 6, 1996 after
being produced in 1992 and being unseen until that time. This special is about Charlie and his team meeting a new kid named Leland who helps them win and getting uniforms (that Mr. Hennessey, of the local hardware store, is offering them but only if they win the first game of the season) after Lucy points out that they don’t have them. The team works hard with Leland in getting them for the new season.
Tropes in It’s Spring Training, Charlie Brown
- The Baby of the Bunch: Leland is the youngest compared to the rest of Charlie’s team, who are much older kids.
- Bittersweet Ending: Charlie and his friends finally won a game for a change, but they lose the next because the “uniforms don’t fit” Leland anymore.
- Call-Back: There are two references to Charlie Brown's All-Stars! that are seen. Mr. Hennessey offering Charlie Brown and his baseball team uniforms. Originally, the girls and Snoopy would be force to leave because they weren't allowed in the league but in this special, Mr. Hennessey offers the uniforms but they had to win the first game of the season. Another one would be a reference to the beginning of the other special that Charlie Brown fail to catch a pop fly. In this special, during the second game of the season without Leland, Charlie Brown tries to catch another pop fly to win the game but once again, he fails to catch it and his team lose the game.
- Didn't Think This Through: Leland should’ve known he wasn’t going to fit into the regular size of the uniforms when they arrive and Charlie Brown forgot to give the heads up to Mr. Hennessey that they have a little kid on the team.
- A Wild Rapper Appears!: In the team’s celebration song. Franklin, from out of nowhere, does a rap verse during it.
