- The Ageless: Sulvain makes more than a few references to things being a long time ago, and his age and birthdate are listed as spoilers. He's been alive for centuries. Chapter 17 reveals that he's been dead since the 11th century, and died at 23, putting his age in the 800-900 range by the time he and Raziol reunite in the 1970s.Sulvain: <I never imagined I would one day look at the sky like this, not back in those times!>
Raziol: Ha! Back in those times? - The Big Damn Kiss: After three chapters of romantic tension, Raziol and Sulvain kiss for the first time on page 114. For the first time on the lips, that is.
- Due to the Dead: Chapter 4 has a flashback where Sulvain burns the body of a past lover on a funeral pyre.
- Necromancer: This is what Sulvain is, both being able to communicate with the recently deceased and possibly bring them back. He's also the undead, seeing as he normally lacks a heartbeat and doesn't need to breathe, and he turns out to be using his necromancy powers to keep his own body alive after death.
- Eternal Love: Sulvain and Raziol's relationship turns into this after Raziol becomes a vampire and they spent centuries searching for each other.
- There Is Only One Bed: In Chapter 4, Sulvain sets up a mass of blankets on the floor of his apartment for Raziol, and says that he will sleep on his old sofa when he feels tired. Raziol then implores him to share his sleeping-space with him.
- Translation Convention: In Chapter 2 when Raziol presents his findings to the Academician, he speaks in Latin, and his words are enclosed in parentheses.
