Note: There will be unmarked late-arrival spoilers for Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Battle and Sonic Generations. You have been warned.

Sonic × Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings is a three-episode animated miniseries based on Sega's long-running Sonic the Hedgehog gaming franchise, created to promote the release of Sonic × Shadow Generations and tie into the story of Shadow Generations. The series is written by Ian Flynn, directed by Christopher Luc and Kevin Molina-Ortiza, and animated by Studio GIGGEX and SIMAGE Animations.
Similar to Sonic Colors Ultimate, Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars before it, this prequel animation ties into the game's release by being focused squarely on Shadow and his past. A preview of the animation
debuted at Anime Expo 2024, with three episodes releasing ahead of the game's launch:
- Episode 1: "Shadow and Maria
" (September 25, 2024) - Episode 2: "Finding the Way
" (October 3, 2024) - Episode 3: "To the ARK
" (October 10, 2024)
In addition, a combination of all three parts (complete with a brief post-credits scene) can be found here
. An extended cut was included as a bonus for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of Sonic × Shadow Generations.
Dark Beginnings follows Shadow the Hedgehog (Kirk Thornton) as he finds himself haunted by memories of his past, remembering the times he spent with Maria Robotnik (Stephanie Sheh). However, as he's re-experiencing these tragic nightmares, he believes that these are not mere dreams. Something about them are much more vivid, more real, with the answers to these haunting visions possibly lying on the Space Colony ARK. With the help of his compatriots from Team Dark, Rouge the Bat (Karen Strassman) and E-123 Omega (Roger Craig Smith), they enact a plan to infiltrate a G.U.N. facility and secure a space shuttle to send Shadow up to the ARK... in exchange for Shadow having to show up to a certain blue hedgehog's birthday party afterward.
Another prequel series set in an Alternate Continuity, The Jet Black Hedgehog: Shadow the Hedgehog, was released around the same time, and also focuses on retelling Shadow's backstory ahead of Sonic × Shadow Generations' release.
Sonic × Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings provides examples of:
- Adaptation Expansion: This series and The Jet Black Hedgehog: Shadow the Hedgehog expand on Shadow and Maria's time on the ARK, building off the cutscenes from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, along with showing the G.U.N. commander's growing hatred of Shadow, which plays a relevant part in the latter game.
- Adaptation Dye-Job: Rouge's eye color is light blue in the mainline games, but in this series, it's green.
- Advertised Extra:
- Emerl, who was one of the first characters revealed for the series and received a prominent spot on the promotional poster, only appears for a brief fight scene in the first episode. His only purpose for being in the series is to establish that Sonic Battle is still canon, and implying that Shadow subdued the out-of-control Gizoid fifty years ago.
- Downplayed with Professor Gerald Robotnik. While he's on the promotional poster of Dark Beginnings, he only shows up in a brief flashback scene in Episode 1, as he's already long dead by the series' present, and doesn't appear in as many scenes as his granddaughter. His main appearances are in Shadow Generations itself, having been pulled from a moment before the ARK tragedy thanks to the Time Eater.
- All Just a Dream: The first episode sees Shadow going through a few moments of his past: observing the Earth from the Space Colony ARK with Maria, his battle with Emerl, Gerald Robotnik's imprisonment, and Maria being shot. When it cuts to the present day, Shadow is alone on a cliffside at night, having apparently dreamed the whole thing. However, Shadow says it was "no mere nightmare" because there were several inconsistencies with the past in that dream, and he leaves the scene to try and find answers as to why he saw what he saw.
- Angst:
- In Episode 1, a major source of Shadow's anxieties is the fact that, as the Ultimate Life Form, he should be a walking panacea for any disease; yet he can do nothing for the sickly Maria, save be her friend.
- In Episode 2, Shadow stares at a Death Leech, a larva of the Black Arms that was used in his creation. He confides with Maria that despite him looking like a hedgehog, he believes to be more of a heartless creature like the alien in the test tube, not helped by how Abe called him a "freak" moments ago.
- Arc Welding:
- Emerl the Gizoid from Sonic Battle makes an appearance in Episode 1, attacking Gerald and the ARK before Shadow intervenes. The journal entries in Battle depict Gerald having studied the robot's connection to an ancient civilization, before it went on a rampage because of it absorbing too much power and weaponry. The Gizoid was eventually subdued, though Gerald doesn't know how or why. Dark Beginnings implies that it was Shadow who stopped the Gizoid's wrath, as Shadow has a nightmare of the event.
- In Episode 2, Rouge mentions how she was collecting intel from Eggman's database for G.U.N., which is how she meets Shadow at Hidden Base. When the G.U.N. Commander saves Shadow from being shot out of the sky, she inserts the drive to bring up a picture of the Time Eater, implying that G.U.N. discovered Eggman's intent to use it for his own ends, kicking off the events of Sonic Generations.
- Ass-Kicking Pose: In Episode 2, the newly reassembled Team Dark groups together and strikes a pose when an Egg Breaker assaults the three with an Epic Flail.Shadow: Take it out!
- As You Know:
- After Maria nearly faints from dragging Shadow to see the Aurora Borealis, Shadow sternly reminds her that the conditions of the ARK merely put her illness in remission and to not overexert herself, something which she should know full well — this is justified mostly because Maria is an excitable child, and she got caught up in her eagerness to show Shadow the northern lights.
- As Team Dark infiltrate the G.U.N. base and reach a control room, Rouge explains much of Shadow's backstory to him, specifically about how he was created thanks to funding from G.U.N. and how they sealed him away for fifty years. She mainly explains this to remind Shadow not hold a grudge against them just because of his past experience — Shadow replies that G.U.N. is not his enemy tonight, only an obstacle in his way.
- Bait-and-Switch: "Shadow and Maria" starts with Maria pulling Shadow down a hallway, telling him to "hurry!" Anyone familiar with Shadow and his backstory may believe it is a flashback to 50 years ago, where the two were on the run from a group of G.U.N. soldiers. Turns out, she's dragging him to the ARK's observation deck so they can see the Aurora Borealis. This episode isn't a mere flashback, however, as it gradually turns into a Nightmare Sequence, Shadow spotting the various inconsistences that crop up.
- Bare-Handed Blade Block: In Episode 2, Shadow catches one of an Egg Pawn's samurai swords in this fashion, holding it with both hands before tossing it aside and punching the Badnik away. In the same episode, he punches the flat side of an Egg Pawn's sword to defend himself and uses one of his Limiter Rings to block an oncoming sword slash.
- Blood Knight: Omega is as battle-hungry as ever, butchering Eggman's robots with gusto and later getting upset with Shadow when the hedgehog destroys a G.U.N. mech that he wanted to blow up.Omega: Face me, inferior models!
- Bullet Catch: A Rocket Catch in Episode 3, where Shadow first catches a homing missile, before letting it fly back towards the Blue Falcon. He later teleports atop the Blue Falcon, catches the same rocket in mid-flight, and then throws it towards the vehicle's engines.
- The Bus Came Back:
- The first episode of Dark Beginnings features the appearance of Emerl for the first time since his debut in Sonic Battle (albeit as a memory) as he perished at the end of Battle and has only been mentioned or made cameo appearances since then, with his effective reconstruction/reincarnation as Gemerl making the majority of proper chronological later appearances in games and other media.
- Maria Robotnik, while also appearing in the game it's promoting as well, makes her return in Dark Beginnings, having not appeared outside of small cameos since Shadow the Hedgehog (albeit the Maria seen in this animation is part of Shadow's memories).
- The G.U.N. Commander makes an appearance as a child in a flashback in Episode 2, his first appearance in any Sonic media since Sonic Chronicles and the Archie Comics. Given Chronicles' non-canon status and the Archie Comics being an Alternate Continuity, Dark Beginnings is his first canon appearance since his debut in Shadow the Hedgehog. He later makes a full appearance in Episode 3, where he approves the launch of Team Dark's stolen shuttle.
- Samurai Egg Pawns return in Episode 2 after last appearing in their debut game Sonic Colors.
- Team Dark goes up against the Egg Breaker in Episode 2 and the Blue Falcon in Episode 3, two bosses which haven't been seen since their debut game, Shadow the Hedgehog.
- Breather Episode: Episode 2 acts as this compared to the dark intensity of Episode 1 and Episode 3's sobering ending. While it does have Shadow lamenting his connection to the Black Arms and being called a freak by the future G.U.N. Commander, Maria is quick to cheer him up, and the rest of the episode focuses on lighthearted banter between Team Dark as they trash Eggman's robots together.
- Call-Forward:
- In "Shadow and Maria", when Shadow wakes up from his nightmare, he's holding the yellow Chaos Emerald; it also appears in "To the ARK", with Shadow using it to perform Chaos Control. In both Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations, he uses the yellow Chaos Emerald to activate his Chaos abilities and is later challenged by Sonic to a Duel Boss fight for it.
- Rouge offers to help Shadow investigate his suspicions about the Black Arms returning in exchange for going to Sonic's birthday party.
- In the flashback portion of Episode 2, Maria comforts Shadow by saying his big heart makes him different from the Black Arms, and that his actions define him, not his origin. Sonic would have a similar discussion with Shadow in Sonic Battle, where Sonic points out that despite being weapons, both Shadow and Emerl have "hearts", and that they don't have to be defined as purely that.
- The flashback portion of Episode 2 starts with Abe, the boy who would eventually become the G.U.N. Commander in the present day, yelling to Maria about how he wants Shadow, a "freak", to stay away from him. He then later returns to see Maria comforting Shadow, looking at the two with some slight guilt towards Shadow, before looking away with an angry glare (possibly out of envy). Abe's hostility would continue into Shadow the Hedgehog, where the G.U.N. Commander carries a grudge against the hedgehog, blaming him for Maria's death 50 years ago aboard the ARK.
- In the main series, Shadow lost his memories of his past between Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes until he learns of his origin as an artificial hedgehog based on the Black Arms in Shadow the Hedgehog. In Episode 2, Shadow is established to be perfectly aware of his origins from 50 years ago, much to his chagrin, and he has yet to forget them.
- Rouge was gathering intel for G.U.N. revolving around how Eggman had found the Time Eater after he was ejected into space after the events of Sonic Colors. Thanks to Eggman traveling back in time and working with his past self, he uses the Time Eater to threaten all of reality, interrupting Sonic's birthday party in the process.
- Canon Immigrant: In this case a name rather than a character, but this web series and Shadow Generations canonizes the GUN Commander's name as "Abraham Tower", a name previously used in the Archie comics.
- Casual Danger Dialogue: In Episode 2, Shadow joins Rouge and Omega while the two raid an Eggman supply depot at Hidden Base. Despite being under assault constantly, all three of them are completely unfazed by the attacks, with Shadow and Rouge having a conversation in mid-fight. They only get even remotely concerned when the Egg Breaker crashes the fight with an Epic Flail and Shadow has to pull Rouge out of the the way.Rouge: [mildly irritated] Hold that thought.
Omega: I call dibs. - Catapult Nightmare: In Episode 1, Shadow awakens from his nightmares with a startled look on his face, accidentally tearing down a nearby tree with a reflexive Chaos Spear.
- Catch and Return: Exaggerated. In Episode 3, Shadow catches a G.U.N. missile and throws it back at the mech that launched it. As if that wasn't enough, Shadow then teleports onto the mech's cockpit, catches the missile again before it makes impact, then throws it into the mech's engines.
- Chiaroscuro: As Shadow expresses his feelings about how he feels more like the ugly, heartless Death Leech inside the test chamber, the world around him grows dark until the only things illuminated being himself and the alien. Maria even fades away in the background, representing how isolated he feels. When Maria gives him another Cooldown Hug, everything brightens up again as he's brought back into reality.
- Continuity Cameo:
- The G.U.N. Commander appears in a flashback in Episode 2, appearing as a child like he did all the way back in the flashback scenes of Shadow the Hedgehog; Maria refers to him as "Abe". He later appears in the present day in Episode 3, revealing that his full name is Abraham Tower — the name he was given in the Archie comics.
- In a scene that depicts a similar moment from The Jet Black Hedgehog: Shadow the Hedgehog, a Death Leech larva of the Black Arms can be seen in a test chamber, with Shadow staring at it uncomfortably.
- Continuity Nod:
- In Dark Beginnings Episode 1:
- After Shadow has a nightmare re-experiencing some of his most traumatic memories, he gazes up at the moon and the ARK. The moon still has a chunk blown out of it, acknowledging for the first time in a long while how it was partially destroyed by the Eclipse Cannon in Sonic Adventure 2. As a consequence of the moon having not been repaired since, there is an orbiting ring of debris around it.
- Emerl only uses a Spin Dash after Shadow hits him with it, which alludes to his Power Copying ability in Sonic Battle and how he needs to observe the opponent first. Emerl's basic fighting combos from the game are also used, with his abilities improving and matching Shadow's as he fights.
- In Episode 2:
- Shadow raids Hidden Base for a space shuttle to the ARK. Hidden Base had a shuttle that flew Sonic and his friends to the ARK in Sonic Adventure 2. However, there are no longer any ships there, so Rouge gets him to hijack a G.U.N. vessel instead.
- The Egg Pawns defending the Hidden Base supply depot that Shadow raids are wearing samurai outfits and wielding katanas, just like the ones in Aquarium Park from Sonic Colors. Fitting since that game happens right before Generations, and Eggman's absence is due to that game's ending as well.
- The Egg Breaker is an independent Badnik rather than a mech vehicle that Eggman pilots, just like in the IDW Comics.
- In Episode 3:
- Rouge mentions how G.U.N. was funding the research that would create Shadow the Hedgehog, as well as how they sealed him away for fifty years. She mentions that Shadow may still have some lingering vendettas against the organization, despite being frequent collaborators before. Shadow acknowledges there is no bad blood tonight, but they are just obstacles for his goal.
- The Blue Falcon uses all of the same weaponry from its first and only appearance in Shadow the Hedgehog: a missile launcher and an area-of-effect particle beam cannon that shoots out in a circular radius wave, its blast cutting the platform Shadow stands on.
- In Dark Beginnings Episode 1:
- Contrived Coincidence: In Episode 2, Shadow just so happens to assault Hidden Base at the same time as Rouge and E-123 Omega's intel gathering mission for G.U.N. is wrapping up.
- Cooldown Hug: Maria gives Shadow these whenever he starts to engage in his darker impulses.
- In Episode 1, after Shadow punches the ARK's floor in frustration about his insecurities and inability to cure Maria, the girl gives him a hug, managing to change his scowl to a small smile as he looks up at her face.
- In Episode 2, Shadow expresses how despite looking like a hedgehog, he shares more similarities with the Death Leech alien larva in front of him, calling both it and himself "ugly, heartless creatures", the world around him going pitch-black until it focuses on just the two of them. Maria gives him another hug, which brightens up the world around him, grounding Shadow back into reality as she tells him he's nothing like the Death Leech.
- "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: After Team Dark wrecks a massive amount of G.U.N. property stealing a space shuttle to get to the ARK, Shadow is almost shot down mid-launch... until Commander Tower steps in and approves of its departure. Afterwards, he scolds Rouge for the damage and points out that he would've just given them the shuttle if they asked him, especially if Black Doom is involved again. Rouge simply replies that Shadow is never one to ask for permission, the only one who would convince him to do such a thing being Maria, who has long since passed.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Compared to the rather even fight Shadow re-experiences from his memories with Emerl in Episode 1, Team Dark easily obliterates the Egg Breaker in seconds, Shadow later does a Kill Steal and takes out a Blue Falcon without getting hit even once.
- Dark Reprise: The end credits song is a melancholy lo-fi remix of "Throw It All Away", Shadow's leitmotif and personal theme from Sonic Adventure 2.
- A Day in the Limelight: The series serves as a character focus for Maria nearly as much as it does for Shadow. In the first two episodes, we learn more about her condition, why she's on the ARK in the first place, that Shadow was created to help Gerald find a way to cure her, and see what her relationship with Shadow was like — and, in turn, Shadow's devotion to Maria and his dream of living on Earth with her forms the crux of the third episode.
- Dramatic Shattering: In the first episode, shattering glass is frequently used in Shadow's nightmare, such as the initial impact from his fight with Emerl destroying all of the test tubes in Gerald's lab (implied to be housing the Artificial Chaos, according to Gerald's journal in Shadow Generations); him punching out Emerl's figure, only to destroy a wall; Shadow crashing through the ARK's window only to land in Gerald's holding cell; to a silhouette of Maria being shattered in the heart, symbolizing the bullet that ended up killing her.
- Dream Intro: Episode 1 starts off as a flashback of Shadow re-experiencing a vivid memory with Maria, before it gradually starts twisting into a nightmare, with his environment distorting into hellish landscapes based on some of his more traumatic experiences. When Shadow wakes up, he suspects the Black Arms are back, taking off in the middle of the night to find a way up to the Space Colony ARK.
- Earth Drift: Inverted, after a long period of the series playing it straight. For the first time in a while, Shadow and Maria refer to the planet they're looking at as the Earth, when prior adaptations, games, and media post-Sonic Colors have avoided giving Sonic's world a name (despite past games like Adventure 2 and Unleashed establishing the planet as a Fictional Earth). Maria even shows him the Aurora Borealis, a real-life meteorological event.
- Epic Flail: The Egg Breaker that attacks Team Dark in Episode 2 has its spiked ball attached to a chain, using the weapon like a mace. This differs from its appearance in Shadow the Hedgehog and the IDW Comics, which had it as a projectile fired from a cannon.
- Everybody Has Standards: Shadow isn't one to shy away from taking care of his enemies permanently, but in Episode 3, when he takes down the Blue Falcon and notices the pilot is struggling to trigger the ejector as the vehicle begins to crash, he goes out of his way to tear off the cockpit glass and force the pilot's seat to eject, saving his life. As he stated earlier in the episode, G.U.N. isn't his enemy right now, just an obstacle, so killing the soldier would be unnecessary.
- Fictional Disability: Maria's terminal disease (still unnamed here, but referred to as Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome in supplementary material) is given more attention in this series; here, it is directly shown that a symptom of the disease is a fragile constitution, with Maria nearly fainting after she exerts herself too much by running a short distance. According to Shadow, the low gravity environment of the Space Colony ARK keeps her condition in remission.
- Filling the Silence: The Japanese dub includes some additional grunts and reaction foley compared to the English original, which has the characters reacting silently.
- Flower Motifs: In traditional Japanese flower arrangement, lilies are used to represent the fleeting nature of life, evoking the sense of ephemeral beauty and the importance of living in the present. Lilies adorn the field that Shadow imagines sitting in with Maria, a life who was taken way too soon and how Shadow's memories of her make him struggle to live in the present.
- Fond Memories That Could Have Been: Episode 3 concludes with Shadow en route to the ARK as his mind is filled with the time he could've shared with Maria had she lived. It's almost enough to bring him to tears before he stops himself and forces himself to focus on what's ahead.Shadow: Stop it! That life was taken from me long ago...!
- Foreshadowing: There are a few signs early on in Episode 1 that indicate that it isn't a flashback, but a Nightmare Sequence. These include Maria's cadence at the start changing from panicked to excited; a vision of G.U.N. soldiers when Maria grabs Shadow's arm; and the hallway changing as Shadow pursues Emerl, the lights flickering out before flickering back in to a completely different location. All of these are signs about it being a nightmare before Shadow starts Spotting the Thread.
- Funny Background Event:
- During Episode 2, Omega can be seen comically sliding across the ground while shooting at the Egg Pawns during Shadow and Rouge's conversation.
- At the beginning of Episode 3, while Rouge is preparing the G.U.N. shuttle for launch, Omega is shaking off a piece of robot wreckage stuck on his foot.
- Good Versus Good: Team Dark versus G.U.N. in Episode 3, as Shadow needs a spacecraft for his trip to the ARK, and despite having worked together for the greater good before, they infiltrate a G.U.N. facility to get it off-the-book. Shadow voices how he has no hostility towards the organization this night, just considering them an obstacle for his goal, right as G.U.N. sends a Blue Falcon to stop the unauthorized space shuttle launch. Shadow and Omega need to fight it off until Rouge gets everything ready. Omega, similarly, has no reason to consider the Blue Falcon an enemy, and fights it because he called dibs and wanted to destroy it. Shadow even goes out of his way to save the pilot when the ejection switch malfunctions, setting them free before the vehicle explodes. The G.U.N. Commander, who manages to stop the conflict from escalating further, notes how they're both on the side of good, yet Team Dark decided to go the rough route and destroy a ton of military equipment instead of just asking him for his help.
- Homing Projectile: The Blue Falcon's missiles have incredibly good tracking after being fired. Even when Shadow starts to teleport everywhere, the missiles manage to keep tracking his presence and are incredibly persistent to hit their target.
- Insert Song: "Without You", a ballad written and sung by Casey Lee Williams, starts playing in Episode 3, starting right after the G.U.N. Commander stops the conflict from escalating any further. When the chorus kicks in, Shadow reminisces about Maria and a future where she could have lived on Earth, the lyrics emphasizing how much he misses her.
- Internal Homage: The first piece of key art showing Shadow walking away from an explosion is shown in full in Episode 3, where Shadow teleports onto the platform, walking away coolly while the Blue Falcon explodes in the background.
- Kick Chick: Rouge's fighting style is depicted this way after years of using bombs and dummy rings to mirror Tails, the most notable moment being when she uses a Diving Kick to sever the Egg Breaker's mace arm.
- Macross Missile Massacre: The Blue Falcon is capable of firing several missiles at Shadow and Omega, shooting enough to the point of making Shadow needing to use Chaos Control to avoid being hit.
- Medium Blending: All of the character designs are 3D Painted CGI models that look 2D, including the Egg Pawns, with the exception of Abraham Tower in both the past and present, who is drawn traditionally.
- Meta Twist: "Shadow and Maria" begins with Maria pulling Shadow down a hallway, telling him to "hurry!" Players of Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog would recognize this as her and Shadow on the run from a group of G.U.N. soldiers, making viewers believe that the episode is adapting the scene where she dies. Her tone then changes to being exuberant, actually being excited while she's dragging him to the ARK's observation deck so they can see the Aurora Borealis. However, it becomes clearer via Rewatch Bonus that Shadow is remembering past events out of order and may have confused the two similar events, foreshadowed by Maria initially sounding panicked.
- Mythology Gag:
- The G.U.N Commander is finally given a name in Episode 2 and 3—Abe, short for "Abraham Tower", his name in the Archie Comics. Fittingly, Ian Flynn, the writer for Dark Beginnings, is the one who gave him that name.
- Shadow imagining a future where Maria was alive and living on Earth is similar to a scene in Sonic X where Chris Thorndyke reminds Shadow of Maria's wish, which also had him briefly imagining Maria and Shadow living on Earth.
- Nothing Personal: Discussed. Shadow has nothing against G.U.N. when they attempt to stop him from reaching the Space Colony ARK in Episode 3. But since they're in his way, he has to stop them. When he attacks the pilot of the Blue Falcon, he goes out of his way to activate the eject button to ensure that the pilot lives before the vehicle itself crashes.
- Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Episode 3 begins with Team Dark near the end of a successful raid on a G.U.N. base while being no worse for wear. The G.U.N. Commander later states that they destroyed millions of dollars worth of their assets.
- Ominous Visual Glitch: In Episode 1, the Nightmare Sequence appears to glitch out at times, suggesting that what's happening may not be quite how Shadow remembers it. These include a Flash Forward to Maria being shot after she grabs his arm, him witnessing the G.U.N. soldiers boarding the ARK, and even landing in Professor Gerald's prison cell (an event he wasn't even present for and likely only saw after his execution), only to see him move farther and farther away as his view glitches abnormally. Once he wakes up, he decides that his answers may be waiting for him at the ARK.
- Override Command: As Shadow's space shuttle launches without authorization, various G.U.N. robots start swarming the facility, including a giant gatling cannon aimed at the shuttle. Before Omega or Rouge can intercept them, Commander Abraham Tower places his hand on a scanner, which recognizes his authority. He then orders for all forces to stand down, making all personnel and weapons stop in place to allow the shuttle's launch, calling off the alarm as well.
- Painted CGI: Dark Beginnings was made using the open-source 3D animation program, Blender, but uses stylized cel-shading textures that makes the series look almost indistinguishable from a 2D anime. There are elements of 2D animation as well.
- Pummel Duel: The fight between Shadow and Emerl sees the two matching one another blow-for-blow, their punches, kicks, and spin dashes clashing against each other.
- Re-Cut: An extended full length version of the series is included as a bonus exclusive to the PlayStation 4/5 versions of Sonic × Shadow Generations, which not only includes the original stinger from the full online version, but an extra stinger that plays after the credits.
- Reestablishing Character Moment: Since this series revisits a number of characters from Shadow's past, especially ones who have been gone from the franchise for almost two decades out-of-universe, Dark Beginnings has a few of these moments that help show how Shadow remembers them, or re-establishing how they fit into the franchise's present:
- Maria, who has exclusively been a character who only appeared in flashbacks of Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, is introduced running with Shadow down a hallway, mirroring how fans first saw her, except this time, she's excited and cheerful instead of panicked. As such, this helps establish Maria not only as a source of positivity within Shadow's past, but also her hopeful optimism about Earth and one day being able to visit it. This scene also includes a moment where she briefly faints, firmly showing how her illness affects her and why she's been kept aboard the ARK for treatment.
- The G.U.N. Commander's sole canonical mainline game appearance was back in Shadow the Hedgehog, where he held a grudge against the titular character for being responsible behind the ARK's shutdown and the deaths of his family. His grudge as a young child is first established in Episode 2 of Dark Beginnings, calling Shadow a "freak" while running awaynote . This contrasts with how the character is in the present, as he calls off the automated defenses targeting a vulnerable, airborne Shadow, later saying he would have helped him and Team Dark had they asked for it instead of needing to go behind his back. This shows his Character Development from G.U.N.'s General Ripper with a deep-seated hatred of Shadow to a Reasonable Authority Figure for Team Dark.
- E-123 Omega, having mostly been Demoted to Extra in the mainline games since Sonic Generations, gets a slightly bigger focus as Team Dark's resident powerhouse. He's introduced in Episode 2 firing upon a group of Egg Pawns, claiming his superiority over the "inferior models" and later calling dibs on the big boss of Hidden Base, the Egg Breaker, whipping out his gatling cannons, ready for a fight.
- Ret-Canon: The G.U.N. Commander was never named in Shadow the Hedgehog, where he was only referred to by his title. The Archie Comics gave this character the name "Abraham Tower" in his appearance there. Dark Beginnings confirms that the G.U.N. Commander in this universe has the same name as his Archie counterpart — Maria calls him "Abe" after the boy calls Shadow a freak and runs away in Episode 2, and he outright identifies himself as "Commander Abraham Tower" in Episode 3 after the space shuttle's launch.
- Revision:
- Dark Beginnings establishes that Shadow was aware of his origins as a Black Arms fifty years ago, even though this was not touched upon in either of the games that covered this period of his life. It does not necessarily contradict the information given in these games:
- In Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow's memories were tampered with by Gerald Robotnik so his creation could focus on destroying the world for killing Maria. As such, despite Shadow possibly being aware of his origins as a Black Arms in Adventure 2, his focus is on getting his revenge on humanity, even if his memories are fake.
- In Shadow the Hedgehog, it was established that Maria already knew the truth about Gerald's work with Shadow, including how he was created by the Black Arms, even vowing in one of his last video logs that the two will protect the planet. Maria comforts Shadow during his moment of angst in Episode 2, saying he is not the monster he believes to be, but the protector of everyone aboard the ARK and (eventually) the people of Earth.
- The series explains why Shadow is initially absent from Sonic's birthday party in Sonic Generations (he was aboard the ARK), and why he chooses to stay when he's teleported to the party at the end (Rouge asked him to visit in exchange for helping him).
- Dark Beginnings establishes that Shadow was aware of his origins as a Black Arms fifty years ago, even though this was not touched upon in either of the games that covered this period of his life. It does not necessarily contradict the information given in these games:
- Scene of Wonder: In Episode 1, Maria hurriedly drags Shadow to the ARK's observation deck, excited to show him something. When Shadow asks what the lights he's looking at are, Maria tells him it's the Aurora Borealis, a phenomena that can only be seen from certain latitudes on Earth, but thanks to the ARK, they can see the whole thing. Maria says that despite her condition, she can't help but want to see the planet's natural beauty, even if she ends up pushing her body to its limits.
- Ship Tease: There's quite a bit between Shadow and Rouge in "Finding the Way." For starters, Rouge's eyes literally light up when she sees Shadow, and she then greets him with an "Evening, handsome." while getting the drop on a Samurai Egg Pawn. When the Egg Breaker is about to attack her, Shadow picks her up with a Bridal Carry and lifts her to safety.
- Shout-Out:
- In Episode 3, Shadow goes out of his way to help the pilot of the now-unstable Blue Falcon eject to safety by unjamming the ejector seat with a punch, bringing to mind a similar scene from Iron Man 1 where Tony unjams the parachute of an ejected pilot mid-fall.
- In Episode 3, as Shadow thinks of a future where he and Maria could have lived on Earth, she wraps him up in a blanket, which is a similar scene to one from Please Save My Earth, where Shion and Mokuren stare out towards Earth, wrapped in a blanket. Fitting, considering how Yuri Shiratori plays Alice, the other identity of Mokuren, in the anime adaptation, and one of Sonic Adventure 2's inspirations was the aforementioned manga.
- Casey Lee Williams' performance of "Without You" in Episode 3 is capped off with a shot of the destroyed moon from Adventure 2, reminiscent of another series with a broken moon where Casey serves as its lead vocalist.
- Spotting the Thread: The first episode appears to be just a regular flashback, until Shadow throws a punch at Emerl that seems to shatter reality itself. As he suddenly finds himself watching the G.U.N. soldiers preparing to raid the ARK, he knows something (or someone) is messing with his memory because G.U.N. responded too quickly to the distress signal, saying "it's happening too quickly."
- Stepping Stones in the Sky:
- In Episode 2, Shadow jumps up the rubble thrown into the air by Egg Breaker's attack to gain enough height to finish it off.
- In Episode 3, Shadow is being pursued by a horde of homing missiles while falling, Shadow uses Chaos Control to stop time, freezing an incoming storm of missiles aimed at him. Taking advantage of the stopped time, he bounces off all of the frozen missiles to get enough momentum to disable the Blue Falcon, all of them exploding as time resumes.
- The Stinger:

, a post-credits scene is added to the end of the footage, showing Black Doom opening all three of his eyes aboard the Space Colony ARK, proving that Shadow was right that his vision in Episode 1 was no mere dream. In the extended cut, this scene is moved to before the credits play. - The extended cut included in the PlayStation 4/5 versions of Sonic × Shadow Generations add one more stinger, replacing the one from the full version. While Shadow sits in a field of white lilies, he thinks back on a past memory where Maria imagines exploring what she missed on Earth. Shadow confesses how he is afraid about not being able to find his purpose or a place to belong once he's on Earth. Maria gives him a tender hug, saying how she'll always help him out, disappearing as a cluster of sparks afterwards.

- Symbolic Blood: In episode 1, Shadow's flashback of Maria being shot in the chest is represented metaphorically by her silhouette shattering like broken glass, the center of impact corresponding to the bullet wound.
- Teleport Spam: Shadow uses his Chaos powers to warp away and confuse the missiles' flight paths, causing them to explode. Despite managing to shake many of them off his tail, he invokes Chaos Control when the missiles start surrounding him.
- True Companions: Heavily implied. In Episode 2, as Maria talks about how she hopes that Shadow will have others he can trust, it would show him coming across Rouge and Omega a minute later, showing that while Shadow might not say it, those are the people he trusts significantly.
- Use Their Own Weapon Against Them: It goes by pretty quickly, but after one of Shadow's punches causes an Egg Pawn to lose its sword, Shadow catches it out of the air and throws it back into the Badnik, destroying it.
- Wacky Sound Effect: When Rouge kicks away an Egg Pawn, her kicks make the sound of a squeaky toy instead of some traditional Kung-Foley, mainly to emphasize how unserious she's being.
- Wild Card: Team Dark are generally more of an Anti-Hero team than completely unpredictable, but this side of their team is pretty well demonstrated in that after Shadow, Omega and Rouge take down an Eggman base for G.U.N. (though Shadow was merely there by pure chance), Omega and Rouge have zero issue helping Shadow raid a G.U.N. base for a rocket to the ARK and costing the latter group millions of dollars on equipment, despite the fact the former group didn't need to do anything more than ask for one.
- Wintry Auroral Sky: In "Maria and Shadow", Maria excitedly takes Shadow to see the Aurora Borealis, ecstatic at being able to see the whole thing from the Space Colony ARK, noting how it can only be seen from certain latitudes down on Earth. She tires herself out from dragging Shadow to see the phenomena, mainly because she's always excited about seeing the Earth's beauty.
