Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Missions

Go To

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Missions was a 1991 DOS computer game by Konami based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, drawing influence from the original Mirage comic book, the first live-action film and the 1987 animated series.

The player can choose to play as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo and select various missions to thwart criminal activity and find the hideout of the Shredder to defeat him within a time limit of 48 hours. Gameplay has been compared to Prince of Persia.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Amalgamation: The game combines characters and elements from the original Mirage comic book (the Triceratons appearing as enemies and bosses), the first live-action film (The Shredder's lieutenant Tatsu appearing as a boss) and the 1987 animated series (Bebop and Rocksteady are featured as bosses, plus Baxter Stockman resembles his blond-haired, Caucasian depiction).
  • Composite Character: April O'Neil in this game dresses in yellow like her 1987 cartoon incarnation, but has the likeness of Paige Turco, her actress in the second live-action film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze.
  • Darker and Edgier: Being somewhat more faithful to the original Mirage comics, the game has a darker tone than the other Konami video game adaptations that were based more on the 1987 cartoon, the game ending with Shredder turned over to the police notwithstanding.
  • Final Boss: The game ends with a final boss fight against the Shredder.
  • Race Lift: The game's depiction of Baxter Stockman is Caucasian like his incarnation in the 1987 cartoon rather than African-American like he was in the original Mirage comic book.
  • Truer to the Text: Outside of some elements from the 1987 animated series and the live action movies (like the multicolored accessories of the Turtles and April being a reporter), the game is a very faithful adaptation of the original Mirage comics. The cut scenes that tell the Turtles' origin story look like a Motion Comic adaptation of the very first issue of the comics.
