The game provides examples of:
- Batman Cold Open: The game begins with Sam and Max solving a murder mystery at a Big Fancy House unrelated to the main plot.
- The Butler Did It: In the game's introduction, Sam and Max investigate a murder at a Big Fancy House and find out that the murderer is the butler.
- The Cameo:
- The full version of the game would have included Chester, the LucasArts phone operator who makes a brief appearance in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.
- The "flying courier" who brings the assignment to Sam and Max is actually the bird from the Day of the Tentacle intro.
- Shoot the Messenger: A literal example. The Commissioner sends a flying courier (namely, a bird) to deliver the assignment to Sam and Max, and they have to shoot the bird to get the assignment.
- Time Bomb: In the game's intro, after Sam and Max figure out that the butler is the murderer, it turns out that he has placed a time bomb under the villa. Sam and Max manage to make a last-minute escape, the lords and ladies at the villa... not that much.
