JumpStart Reading for Kindergartners (Video Game)
JumpStart Reading for Kindergartners is a game in the JumpStart series of Edutainment Games. By release order, this is the first game in the series to focus on a specific subject.

Hopsalot the Rabbit wants to find the treasure buried in his family's carrot patch. To do so, he's paying visits to five of his relatives as well as the hamster Bebop. These six characters all live in different places and each will provide a clue about the treasure in exchange for the completion of a Mini-Game. Each clue takes Hopsalot deeper into the carrot patch and closer to the treasure.

This game provides examples of:

  • Anthropomorphic Shift: Back in the original JumpStart Kindergarten, Bebop talked, but he was hamster-sized and wore no clothes. In this game, he's the same size as Hopsalot and is now a Fully-Dressed Cartoon Animal. In the second version of JumpStart Kindergarten, which came out after this game, Bebop reverts to being hamster-sized, but he retains clothing.
  • The Artifact: This game was initially released as Kindergarten Reading. Although the title was changed to Reading for Kindergartners in later releases, the opening song still refers to the game as its original title.
  • The City: Bebop's "pad" is located in "the big city." Out of the six characters you can visit, he is the only one to live in an urban environment.
  • Deep South: Grandpa lives here, specifically on a bayou. Of course, he's portrayed as a rather stereotypical hick.
  • Down on the Farm: Hopsalot's cousin Romulus lives on a ranch with prairie dogs and cows.
  • Educational Song: Hopsalot's home features the same Alphabet Song that previously appeared in JumpStart Kindergarten. Gracie's place has two songs about vowels.
  • Eskimo Land: This is where Granny lives. Her home is even an igloo.
  • Ironic Name: The egret Einstein does not seem to be the brightest creature.
  • Polar Bears and Penguins: Granny lives in "the wintry north," which naturally includes penguins.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Hopsalot's rabbit family owns a carrot patch.
  • Surfer Dude: Hopsalot's cousin Flash is a surfer, complete with the stereotypical dialect.
  • Tropical Island Adventure: Being a surfer, Flash lives on a tropical beach. Given that most locations in this game are coded as regions of the United States, it's possible that this is meant to represent Hawaii, although it's never identified as such nor are any obvious Hula and Luaus tropes present.
  • World of Funny Animals: Everyone in this game is some sort of Funny Animal, mainly rabbits since most of the characters are Hopsalot's relatives. This is a little odd considering Hopsalot taught human kids in JumpStart Kindergarten.
