Recess S 2 E 19 Yes Mikey Santa Does Shave

Go To

As Mikey is slated to play Santa Claus in the school holiday spectacular, he tries to prove to his friends that Santa exists, only to come to believe that he doesn't. It will take a Christmas miracle for Mikey to believe again.

Tropes:

  • Achilles in His Tent: After being convinced there is no Santa, Mikey bails on the performance and can't be swayed when told the rest of the school is counting on him. It takes the old man giving him a pep talk about belief that changes his mind.
  • Ambiguously Jewish: T.J. playing "Harvey Hanukkah."
  • Broken Tears: Mikey starts crying his eyes out when he decides to stop believing in Santa.
  • Call-Back: When Mikey is having trouble bringing out his singing voice for the audition, Principal Prickley brings up Miss Salamone to help him. Mikey smiles sadly on remembering his crush and channels the voice into a Santa laugh.
  • Children Are Innocent:
    • Mikey still believes in Santa and considers him the greatest person ever for devoting his life to making other people happy.
    • Mikey and the old man observe two kids exchange presents. The gifts are relatively minor items, but both kids deeply appreciate what they receive, which the old man says is the spirit of Christmas.
  • Christmas Episode: As the school sets up a holiday play for TV, Mikey finds his friends no longer believe in Santa and sets out to prove he does exist.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When it's revealed that the old man was really Santa Claus, we get this:
    Gretchen: But that means...
    Mikey: Yeah! Santa shaved!
  • Consolation Backfire: Feeling guilty that Mikey was disappointed yet again by a fake Santa, this time by the one on the radio, Gus tries to reassure Mikey that at least he will still kill it in the pageant. That ends up being the wrong thing to say; Mikey tears up his letter to Santa and says he no longer believes in childish things, concluding that he's no longer doing the pageant and contributing to more lies in the world. The gang watches him storm off crying in shock, with Gretchen quietly admitting this must be how the Grinch felt.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Throughout the episode, Hank has the feeling that it's going to snow. And it does at the end.
  • Dreaming of a White Christmas: Despite the unseasonably warm weather and Spinelli stating that it hasn't snowed on Christmas since she was in preschool, Hank the janitor insists that they're going to have a white Christmas and is shown diligently preparing for it despite all evidence to the contrary. In the end, he's proven right as the snow finally arrives while Mikey performs "White Christmas" for the pageant.
  • Flashback: At Prickley's suggestion, Mikey briefly thinks back to singing for Miss Salamone during his audition.
  • Foreshadowing: The old man being Santa is hinted at by him knowing Mikey's name without being told and stating with a hint of annoyance in his voice that Santa's always depicted with a beard.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Mikey's high note cracks Gus' glasses.
  • Godzilla Threshold: With Mikey a no-show, Prickly agrees to let Randall fill in simply because there is absolutely no one else.
  • Have We Met?: Mikey in response to the old man knowing his name. The old man simply says he's seen him around.
  • Heroic BSoD: Mikey sits on a stoop staring at the ground after deciding to give up belief in Santa and deciding not to do the pageant. He only snaps out of it when a random stranger gives him a pep talk.
  • Honor Before Reason: The rest of the gang could have humored Mikey and said they believed in Santa. Instead, they all tell him bluntly that they stopped believing a while back and provide the evidence. This leads to the rest of the plot.
  • How Can Santa Deliver All Those Toys?: Mentioned when Mikey attempts to prove that Santa is real and indeed can deliver all those toys. Gretchen counters that a man of his size could not fit through the chimney and that the speed he would need to travel at is simply impossible.
  • Hypocritical Humor: While the gang waits in line for the Mall Santa, Gus bemoans how embarrassing it is to be the oldest kids there. When one of the little kids starts shoving to move the line, Gus tells them to wait their turn.
  • Insistent Terminology: Bream when Prickly calls his spectacular a TV special:
"It's not a TV special, Prickly, it's a global satellite non-denominational extravaganza. I told you this three times."
  • Jerkass:
    • Mayor Fitzhugh dresses as Santa Claus just to get re-elected. Once his ruse is exposed, everybody jeers him.
    • Randall tells Mikey Santa doesn't exist just to spite him for getting the part that he wanted.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Ricky McCloud's anger when Mikey outs him as a Santa impersonator on his radio show is not entirely invalid; as Ricky points out, there are likely children tuned in who think they are hearing the real Santa, and Mikey may have shattered their belief.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Mikey gets casted as Santa Claus in the school’s Christmas pageant, Randall, who wanted the role himself, tells Mikey that Santa doesn’t exist then attempts to take over the role for Mikey when he learns the latter won’t be showing up for the pageant because he believes Santa isn’t real. However, Randall ends up getting stage fright and fainting when trying to fill in the role of Santa, embarrassing himself, not just in front of the whole school, but all across America as the pageant is being televised, which is deserved on his part for almost ruining Christmas for Mikey.
  • Magical Negro: Santa Claus turns out to be this type of character.
  • Mall Santa: Mikey meets one of these to try to prove Santa's existence. Unfortunately, Mikey's weight on his lap leads the fake Santa to tear his fake beard off in frustration.
Mall Santa: Hey, you try wearing a polyester beard for four hours in this heat!
  • Manly Tears: Bream crying into Prickly's shoulder after Mikey has sung "White Christmas."
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Let's just say that T.J. and his friends aren't thrilled on realizing that they not only broke Mikey's faith but also inadvertently convinced him not to perform for the pageant.
  • Never Say "Die": Averted; not only does Vince say that St. Nicholas died in the 4th century, but Spinelli explicitly states that a busy schedule "killed Elvis."
  • Noodle Incident:
  • Political Overcorrectness: Referenced by Bream during his phone call with Hollywood: "Even the most jingle-brained political-correctoid won't be able to complain about this show!"
  • Race Lift: Santa Claus is commonly (though not exclusively) portrayed as a white man with a white beard in western media. note  In this special, he's African-American... and shaves.
  • Running Gag: Hank's insistence it's going to snow and trying to keep the faith no matter how the weather looks.
  • Santa's Existence Clause: Mikey is so desperate to prove that Santa is real, but nothing pans out, and he loses faith. Walking around depressed, he encounters an old man that talks to him about the importance of belief. Mikey regains his faith and later learns the old man was Santa all along. And he shaves, too.
Old man: This is a time for giving, Mikey, not giving up. I mean, just because you can't see something with your eyes or hear it with your ears doesn't mean it's not real. Some things exist in here. [taps Mikey's chest]
    Mikey: In your heart?
Old man: Sure. If you can believe in Santa in your heart, then he is real and so is everything he stands for, like giving, and selflessness, and friendship.
Mikey: I don't know, Mister. Even if I could start believing in him again, I know my friends can't.
Old man Well, maybe there's a way you can give 'em that belief back. Heck, that'd be the greatest Christmas gift of all.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Special Guest: Dick Clark As Himself and James Earl Jones as the real Santa.
  • Squee: Prickly over Dick Clark knowing his name and saying it on TV.
  • This Is Reality: Pointed out by the gang: it's unlikely that St. Nicholas is immortal due to him having died, with a tomb and all. Mikey tries to prove them wrong by bringing textbooks on the subject, but even the science doesn't support him.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: After the mess at the parade, Mikey is ready to give up, until he hears Santa on the local radio station. Then he sees it's the radio host doing a skit.
