"Forget it. You can't just undo what's been done to her. If only someone had shown them a little kindness, they might have gone to school, made friends, and lived happily ever after. Who knows, right? But… that didn't happen, did it? I'm sorry, but stories like this don’t have happy endings, Rock."
Benny on Gretel, Black Lagoon

Muzan Kibutsuji: Persistent. You're all seriously persistent. And it bores me. It sickens me from the bottom of my heart. Whenever you open your mouth, you only remember that one dumb notion about avenging your parents, kids, or siblings. You've all survived. That should be enough for you. So your family got slaughtered. What's the problem here? Think of yourself as lucky, and go back to the way you lived life before. Look at it this way. Being killed by me is the same as encountering a great calamity. You don't need to think so hard about it. Rains, winds, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes. Nobody tries to swear revenge on a natural disaster, no matter how many lives it takes. You can't bring dead humans back to life. Why not just stop fussing over the issue all the time and live quietly to earn your daily wages? Most humans live that life. Why can't you all do that? There's only one reason. The Demon Hunters are an assembly of deviants. And I'm tired of dealing with deviants. I'm the one who really wants to put an end to all this.
Tanjiro Kamado: Muzan, you should not be allowed to exist.

    Fan Works
Daisuke Hiyori: And you think this is a healthy, loving relationship?! Noriko... you're beyond saving.
Noriko Aino: Eh...? Daisuke-kun?
Daisuke: I held out hope, even after we've condemned you to death, that you would finally realize that all you had done was ruin my life, your life, our lives, and at the very least apologize for what you've done? And you didn't change. You never did. You're exactly the same girl you always were; a violent, remorseless murderer who's under the delusion that I belong to you like some sort of toy!

Grand Hoof: Doom.
Doom Raizer: You finally came. So... come to gloat about your victory?
Grand Hoof: No. I... I've come to tell you that I'm done beating myself up over you. It's true I wasn't the greatest father, and I did fail you. I failed every step of the way... but I still tried to fix it. I will admit I didn't try enough... but I still want to reach you. And yet... You made your own choices, and this is where they left you. As such, I...I saw what you became, and I know now that it's impossible. I know I shouldn't do this, but... I'm done, son. I'm sorry, son, but... but I'm done. I'm through trying to reach you.
Doom Raizer: Oh? You know you can't just forget about me, Grand. I'm a part of you. What would Mother think, Grand? Hmm? What would Live Wire think?
Grand Hoof: She'd be ashamed of me, son. Me and you both. She'd tell me to never give up on you, and she'd tell you that you should be ashamed of what you've become.
Doom Raizer: I'm proud of what I am, father.
Grand Hoof: I know. And Daisy would be ashamed of you as well.
Doom Raizer: Shut up! Don't you dare speak her name! You don't have the right!
Grand Hoof: You're right son. You're right that I don't have the right to speak about her, or your mother. I failed them, and it still haunts me to this day that I failed them. But I'm through allowing the past to control me. I won't be haunted by it or you anymore. My life might not be perfect, but I have my friends, my duty, and now I have my grandson back. I'm happy with that, even if I have to leave you behind."
The Flash Sentry Chronicles, Season 3, "Homeward Bound"

"'Sometimes people run out of chances,' Ladybug said in a soft tone. 'Sometimes they do so many bad things that they find there is nobody willing to forgive them.' She was briefly reminded of Lila, who seemed to think that even if one lie was exposed, she could just tell another and get back on track, or Adrien, who was so deluded that he really thought Marinette would just forgive everyone in the class for all their petty cruelties once Lila wasn’t a problem anymore. 'But Chloe, I don’t think you’re at that point… yet.'"

Marinette: But I’m sorry! I know you guys don’t believe me, but I am! I feel terrible for everything I did! I was wrong and selfish and petty, I admit it! Please, you guys have to believe me… I regret everything, and I wish with all my heart that I could take it all back. I am really, truly, sincerely, from the very bottom of my heart, sorry.
Juleka: You know what? Even if you’re telling the truth… it makes no difference.
Marinette: What?! What do you mean?
Juleka: I mean, you forgave Chloe out of everyone else, because you claimed that because she was sincere, it meant more than everyone’s apologies, that just her meaning it when she said sorry was enough to earn your forgiveness. But one thing I’ve learned from all this, out of lots of other stuff, is that just being sorry and actually meaning it… isn’t always enough to make things better. Especially when they’re as severe as this.
Marinette, the hard truth is… the things you’ve done, the lengths you’ve gone to, the damage and pain that you’ve caused, however indirectly… It’s just too much. And there are not enough apologies in the world that will ever even begin to mend what you broke out of selfishness and wrath. So it doesn’t make any difference whether or not you’re actually as sorry as you say. There are just some things in this world that can never be forgiven… no matter how sincere you are.
Marinette: C’mon, guys, please. Isn’t there anything I could do to make it up to you?
Alya: No, Marinette. You got what you wanted; you got to make sure that you never helped us get our stuff back.
— Final Chapter before Epilogue, Karmic Backlash

"Not even his own followers mean a thing to him. He can't be saved."

Kyoji: I just…I don’t understand. She was getting better. I thought she was improving… All I wanted was to help her…to give her another chance after what…what Matsuda did to her…
Miaya: Nakamura-kun…what you tried to do was very thoughtful. I wouldn’t expect anything less from you. But this was beyond anything you could help with. Otonokoji Kanade’s with people whose affection she desires, her volatile emotions, her violent tendencies, her egotism, and problems with affective empathy; this was all something a trained professional would have trouble dealing with. Not to mention, with how severe her antisocial behavior has been shown in the past…
Kyoji: …I was just making things worse?
Miaya: It was just more than you can handle, that’s all. You can put in all the effort you’re capable of, but it’s also up to the patient to apply what you’ve tried to share with them. And Otonokoji-san…she made her choice. Not everyone can be saved. That’s…one of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn as a therapist.

Collin: Leave her alone!
Cletus: And what are you going to do about it, Collin? You're nothing but a pathetic little sheep who follows others along instead of having actual balls between your legs to do anything. You were pathetic back when we were angels, and you're still pathetic even now.
Collin: You two...are the pathetic ones... you're nothing but bullies...and you've lost sight of everything we once were!
Cletus: What we once were?! We were nothing but a bunch of pawns for a fat, stupid old man who didn't appreciate us, no matter how hard we worked! He left us to rot on this stupid f-cking planet with these apes that he dares given even a chance to earn paradise when the only thing they deserve is to be completely exterminated!
Keenie: And I've never felt more liberated in all my f-cking life! No more rules! No more having to play Miss Goodie Goodie! And best of all?! I can f-cking kill whoever I want!
Collin: What about our parents? Our friends? Our family? You can't just-
Cletus: Oh, please, like they'll give a damn about us now that we're demons. If they were any real parents, they would have fought for us instead of letting us be punished. Besides, my old man is a bastard anyway. As far as I'm concerned, they can go f-ck themselves. But then again, you've always been a mama's boy to that whore you call a mother.
Collin: DON'T CALL MY MOTHER A WHORE, YOU BASTARD!

Rey: Something’s happening to [Ben]. He could turn.
Leia: We both have better things to do than talk hypotheticals. Besides, what happens if he does turn? You think he comes home, fights with the Resistance, and everything is forgiven?
Rey: Yes. Exactly. Han told him it wasn’t too late.
Leia: I told Han that, and now Han's dead. No. Even when I told him to bring our son home, it was a delusion. If he showed up right now, if he came home and regretted everything he ever did and told us everything he knows about the First Order, if he fought for the Resistance every day of his life, he'd still be coming home to a trial and execution.
[...]
Leia: [Ben]'s not Finn, following orders, jumping ship as soon as he figures out what the First Order is about. He’s giving the orders. He probably gave the order to fire Starkiller. Do you understand? You don’t remember Alderaan. But my son destroyed planets.
Rey: We don’t know that.
Leia: Even if he didn’t give the order, he stood back and let it happen, and there’s a thousand other things he did that are unforgivable, including torturing both of you.
Rey: I was fine.
Leia: A lot of people aren’t fine. They’re dead, or the people they love are dead, or their planets are space dust, because of my son. I know you want to believe in redemption, but he’s done too much. The only way to redemption for him is to walk out in front of a Republic firing squad.

    Films — Animation
Batman: I don't want to hurt you. I don't want either of us to end up killing the other. But we're running out of alternatives. Perhaps it all hinges on tonight. I don't know what it was that bent your life out of shape, but maybe I've been there, too. Maybe we could work together. I could rehabilitate you. You don't need to be alone. We don't have to kill each other. Let me help you.
The Joker: I'm sorry, but... no. No, it's far too late for that.

Bruce Wayne: I couldn't save [Andrea], Alfred.
Alfred Pennyworth: I don't think she wanted to be saved, sir. Vengeance blackens the soul, Bruce. I always feared you would become that which you fought against. You walk the edge of that abyss every night. But you haven't fallen in, and I thank heaven for that. But Andrea fell into that pit years ago. And no one, not even you, could've pulled her back.

Vlad Masters/Plasmius: You wouldn’t turn your back on an old friend, would you?
Jack Fenton: An old friend? No. You? Yes.

"Men who kill without reason cannot be reasoned with."
Stoick the Vast on Drago Bludvist, How to Train Your Dragon 2

Frollo: Now, now...! L-Listen to me, Quasimodo...
Quasimodo: No! You listen! All my life, you've told me that the world is a dark, cruel place! But now I see that the only thing dark and cruel about it is people like you!

"I thought I could redeem you. I was wrong."
Batman to Robin, Injustice (2021)

Roxanne: Please don't do this, I know there's still good in you, Hal.
Tighten/Hal: You're so naïve, Roxie. You see the good in everybody, even when it's not there. You're living a fantasy! There is no Easter Bunny, there is no Tooth Fairy, and there is no Queen of England. This is the real world, and you need to wake up!

Moses: Something else is coming, something much worse than anything before! Please, let go of your contempt for life before it destroys everything you hold dear! Think of your son!
Rameses: I do. You Hebrews have been nothing but trouble. My father had the right idea about how to deal with your people.
Moses: Rameses!
Rameses: And it's time I finished the job!
Moses: Rameses!
Rameses: And there shall be a great cry in all of Egypt, such as never has been or ever will be again!
Moses: ...Rameses, you bring this upon yourself.

Ethical Bug: That was horrible! Your wish is horrible! YOU'RE HORRIBLE! You're an irredeemable monster!
"Big" Jack Horner: Whoa, whoa! What took you so long, idiot?!

"A line between friend and enemy is not as clear as I once believed. Once it's crossed, there's no going back, because some transformations are permanent."
Optimus Prime on Megatron, Transformers One

Queen Amaya: [Magnifico]'s become practically untouchable. No metal can break his staff, no spell can bind his magic!
Dahlia: And no one can bring him back from this. (reads from book) "Embrace forbidden magic just once, and you commit to it for eternity."

Jean-Luc Picard: This isn’t about me anymore.
Star Trek: Nemesis, as Shinzon prepares to fire the Scimitar’s thaleron weapon on the Enterprise

Obi-Wan: I have failed you, Anakin... I have failed you...
Anakin: I should have known the Jedi were plotting to take over!
Obi-Wan: Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil!

"You should know that when we fought each other in the past, I did so with a glimmer of hope that my brother was still in there somewhere. That hope no longer exists to protect you."
Thor to Loki, Thor: The Dark World

    Literature
"The murderer of Huon de Domville is taken, guilty past doubt. That is over. Pity is out of reach, short of penitence, and of that there’s none. The man has not only killed his uncle, but vilely betrayed and misused his friend who trusted him, and shamelessly deceived a harried and forsaken girl."
Brother Cadfael, The Leper of Saint Giles

"First, they must want to be redeemed. All Caedus wants is to control everything he sees. There is no point wishing otherwise."
Tenel Ka Djo on Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus, Legacy of the Force

The goodbeasts of Redwall helped Veil grow from a Dibbun to a youngbeast, trying to teach him the values of the life we live here, to honor, help, befriend, and never to harm others. Sadly, he ignored all advice and went his own way, lying, cheating, and creating bad feeling among other beasts. All this could have been forgiven, and has been countless times in the past. However, now Veil has passed the point of forgiveness. He tried to kill one of us, and there is no absolution whatsoever for a creature who would do this to a Brother or Sister of Redwall.

"Traitorous’s Law: while redemption is the greatest victory one can achieve over a villain, to function it does require the villain to have at least a single redeemable quality. Addendum: Yes, even if a Choir is involved."

Obi-Wan: Anakin?!
Darth Vader: Anakin is gone. I am what remains.
Obi-Wan: [sobbing] ...I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Anakin. For all of it.
Darth Vader: I am not your failure, Obi-Wan. You didn't kill Anakin Skywalker. I did. The same way I will destroy you!
Obi-Wan: ...Then my friend is truly dead. Goodbye...Darth.

Sisko: Sometimes life seems so complicated. Nothing is truly good or truly evil. Everything seems to be a shade of gray. And then you spend some time with a man like Dukat, and you realize that there is such a thing as truly evil.
Dax: To realize that is one thing. To do something about it is another. So what are you going to do?
Sisko: I'll tell you what I'm not going to do: I'm not going to let him destroy Bajor. I fear no evil. From now on, it's him... or me.

I didn't want to believe you. You told me there was no cure, that these people were dead, not sick. I chose not to believe that. But when Shane shot Lou in the chest, and she just kept coming, that's when I knew what an ass I'd been. That Annette had been dead long ago, and I was feeding a rotten corpse! That's when I knew there was no hope.
Hershel Greene to Rick on the Walkers, The Walking Dead, "Nebraska"

Paris: Tell me, Witchfinder General, how many lives have you taken?
Tamacti Jun: Enough to damn my soul many times over.
Paris: And yet, you will kill the queen whom you have served. There is not enough damnation for you.
Tamacti Jun: No. I suspect not.

Athena: There's nowhere you can hide, Spartan. Put as much distance between you and the truth as you want. It changes nothing. Pretend to be everything you are not... teacher, husband... father. But there is one unavoidable truth you will never escape. You cannot change. You will always be… a monster.
Kratos: I know. But I am YOUR monster no longer.

Morgana: Can I assume that you've made up your minds about this—about how Kamoshida might suffer a mental shutdown?
Ryuji: I have. Someone almost died because of him! I don't give a rat's ass what happens to him anymore!
Morgana and Ryuji deciding to change Suguru Kamoshida's heart after he assaulted Shiho and nearly drove her to suicide, Persona 5

Clank: There must be another way to make a home for your people!
Chairman Drek: You think that's what this is about? Who do you think polluted our last world? I did! This is about one thing and one thing only: cash, and lots of it. See, I've been paid for every square inch of my new world. Once the new inhabitants move in, I'll begin polluting this world as well, and the whole thing starts all over again. Ah... brilliant.
Clank: Why, you evil little—

Leon: You're really doing this? It's not too late!

Sensei (to the villain): It’s over, you lost! Now it’s time to die!
MC: No! Sensei, stop! I can sense good in him!
Sensei: Dumb fuck! Do you know what he did?! He slaughtered all of our children!
MC: He deserves another chance! Due to his circumstances, he had to do it!
Sensei: Under what circumstances does he have to drown the kids, single-handedly?! This motherfucker is dying!

"While the necessity for the Primary Action is regrettable, it is the opinion of this Committee that it is unavoidable at this juncture. "Belos, someone who has used his cunning, power, and manipulation to nearly end the world twice, is left physically and socially powerless. What makes this moment so good is that there is no debate, no grand speech from Luz detailing why Belos is evil, no big fight, no attempt to even acknowledge what Belos is suffering from, because he does not deserve it. They do not even attempt to redeem Belos like Luz has redeemed so many other characters, because he. Does not. Deserve it. He does not deserve anything except the cold, blank stare of someone he manipulated, who sees him for what he has always been: a monster. And because Belos couldn't adapt, because Belos couldn't learn, because Belos couldn't accept, he is killed by the literal world around him. And his reign... comes... To an end."

Zuko: I know what you're gonna say. [Azula]'s my sister, and I should be trying to get along with her.
Iroh: No, she's crazy, and she needs to go down.

Gwen: No, I won't help you!
Ben: If you won't use your powers to track him down, I'll just go find him myself!
Gwen: But it's Kevin!
Ben: Wake up and smell the end of the world, Gwen! He's out of control!
Gwen: He's our friend!
Ben: Was our friend!
Gwen: We'll figure out some way to save him!
Ben: He's too far gone. Either we save Kevin, or we save the world.

Father: Hmm...
Tommy: So what are you waiting for? Turn your kids back to normal again.
Father: Nah. Those kids of mine are really annoying. This sheep thing is probably an improvement.
Tommy: Man, you really are evil!
Father: Yes. I know.

Glenn Quagmire on Jeff, Family Guy, "The Story of Brenda Q"

Charlie: So... does this mean that you think it's possible to rehabilitate a demon?
Alastor: Hahaha! Of course not. That's wacky nonsense! "Redemption". Oh, the nonexistent humanity! No-no-no-no, I don't think there's anything left that could save such loathsome sinners. The chance given was the life they lived before, the punishment is THIS! There is no undoing what is done.

Hell is forever, whether you like it or not
Had their chance to behave better, now they boil in the pot
'Cause the rules are black and white
There's no use in tryin' to fight it
They're burnin' for their lives until we kill 'em again!

There's no question to be posed
He's unholy, case closed
Did you forget that Hell is forever?

Trixie: Mm. I'm all for second chances. Third, even. But he just seems like a bad bug.

Ned: It's because I believe every soul has the possibility of salvation... at least I thought so 'til now! Homer Simpson, you are not worth saving.
Homer: What? But I thought we'd be neighbors in heaven, goofin' on all the new dead people...
Ned: Not. Worth. Saving!
The Simpsons, "The Greatest Story Ever D'oh-ed"

Butters: Hey, come on, fellas. We can't spend another holiday feeling bad for Eric [Cartman]. There's nothing that could have changed the path he was on.

Butters: Fuck you, Eric! (flips him off back)

Leonardo: You killed him! He was your brother, and you KILLED HIM! He was your brother, Saki! Your best friend! How could you do that?
Shredder: Splinter was cursed to become a loathsome rat! It was his fate, his destiny!

Shredder: No, I-I'm- (Leonardo interrupts Shredder with his katana)

Cyborg: No more chances.
Starfire: No more trust.
Raven: And no more mercy.
Beast Boy: [Terra]'s just another criminal.
Robin: And we’re going to stop her... No matter what it takes.

Terra: Beast Boy. Beast Boy, stop! Aren't you even gonna talk to me?
[Beast Boy, as a wolf, growls at her]
Cyborg: There's nothing left to say.
Starfire: You attempted to annihilate us.
Raven: Did you think we wouldn't take it personally?
Robin: It's over, Terra.

Optimus Prime: Bulkhead, return to base. There is something that I must do.
Bulkhead: Wha — serious?
Optimus Prime: I have been foolish not to see what history has proven, over and over again: that Autobots and Decepticons will never mend their ways. If there can be no diplomatic solution to this perpetual conflict, then I must not allow darkness to fall upon this or any other planet. Megatron must be destroyed.

Paulie: Franklin! You've got to stop this! You've done all you can for this guy!
Franklin: Obviously not bro! He still hates me!
Paulie: You can't be everyone's friend, Franklin! You've got to LET. IT. GO.
