Wintertime Episode (trope)
It's winter time at Peach Creek High!

Lamar Jackson: [After hitting Baker Mayfield with a snowball] Come join! It's the annual AFC North snowball fight! Don't worry, the division's not like it was in the old days.
Baker Mayfield: Okay you lovable f**king scamps, I'm in.
[Five minutes later, Mayfield is on the ground in Jarvis Landry's arms, clearly in pain as the snowball fight explodes into a full scale war]
Mayfield: MORPHINE! AND THEN PUT ME BACK F**KING OUT THERE!

Whenever one thinks of winter and snow, they automatically think of Christmas, yuletide, and the like. However, believe it or not, there are other things to consider during the coldest months of the year other than the build-up to (or aftermath of) what many consider to be the happiest time of the year.

Christmas, of course, is nice, but it barely encompasses winter itself, especially since the first day of winter is December 22nd in the Northern hemisphere (at least in the Western astronomical season) and that snow on Christmas is exceptionally rare.

There's all sorts of fun to be held during this time, including skiing, sledding, snowboarding, ice skating, snowball fights, and everything in-between. On the flip-side, of course, winter can also be seen as pretty inconvenient, if not dangerous, and dealing with or griping about snowstorms, ice, freezing temperatures, being Snowed-In, and what have you can put a damper on everything.

Related to Braving the Blizzard, Snow Means Death, Snow Means Love, Ski-Resort Episode, and It's Always Spring. Can be connected to Winter Warfare if the plot of the work in question happens to war during wintertime. Slippy-Slidey Ice World is the video game exclusive equivalent. Not to be confused with Cold Snap, as that's when it's sudden extremely cold weather and a major plot point instead of activities (though a Wintertime Episode can cross over into a Big Storm Episode creating said cold snap). Also distinct from Christmas Episode and New Year Has Come, the (obvious) Christmas and New Year's Eve/Day episodes, respectively.

They spend months in the cabin, whiling away the time until thaw. When conditions allow them to travel again, Fern takes ill, and Stark has to employ Cold Touch Surprise to wake Frieren (who calls him a "monster" for it), as she's the only one who has a chance of treating Fern's ailment, though luckily it's only a cold, and rest and a warm cabin with a helpful woman living there are able to help, as well as a remedy Frieren makes.

    Literature
  • Angelina Ballerina: Angelina Ice Skates takes place in the winter near New Year's Eve, whereas most books (other than Angelina's Christmas and Angelina's Halloween) take place in the nebulous warm spring or summer. • Several Warrior Cats books take place in the wintertime, and the season occasionally plays strongly into the plot:
    • The first winter in the series spans from Fire and Ice to Forest of Secrets. It involves illness spreading through the Clan, a Forbidden Romance starting between Graystripe and Silverstream after she saves him from falling through the ice, and tensions between the Clans due to scarce prey. The flooding at the end of it also poses a danger to the cats as well.
    • The one lasting from Moonrise to Dawn is the harshest the Clans have faced, due to the fact that on top of winter being a prey-poor time of year to begin with, the forest is also being destroyed by humans which exacerbates the problem; several cats starve to death.
    • In Night Whispers, some young ShadowClan cats play a hockey-like game on the frozen lake, but it ends in tragedy when Flametail falls through the ice and drowns.
    • The novella Goosefeather's Curse involves a very brutal winter where the Clan goes so hungry that they're forced to eat twigs and worms to stay alive, and several cats starve. It isn't helped by the fact that Goosefeather gets the idea to store prey in a frozen hole dug in the ground, but their stockpile gets ruined when it warms up enough to fill with water.
    • Lost Stars is also a very plot-relevant winter: A relationship between two of the protagonists begins when one rescues the other from falling through the ice, and Bristlepaw's warrior promotion is delayed because there's no prey to be found during her final hunting assessment. The Clans have also not heard from the spirits of their ancestors, StarClan, in a few moons, which they suspect is due to the Moonpool (where they commune with StarClan) being completely frozen. At the end of the book, Shadowpaw tries to cure Bramblestar's illness by burying him in snow - a treatment that a mysterious voice told him to try - which results in Bramblestar losing a life; this kicks off the arc's main plot when a malevolent spirit (who was the real reason behind the Clans getting cut off from StarClan) possesses the leader's vacant body and impersonates him.
