Shawn Hunter: It does if you've seen as many horror movies as I have. This is classic. The locked door, the scary janitor, the bloody warning and… our soon-to-be first victim.
[everyone looks at Kenny]
Kenny: Me? Why me?
Cory Matthews: Well Kenny, it's certainly not going to be any of us!
A Genre Savvy character doesn't necessarily know they're in a story, but they do know of stories like their own and what worked in them and what didn't. They may attempt to apply the lessons they've learned from movies, books, or other fiction to their own situation, or they may restrict themselves to snarky asides and observations. The exact opposite of Genre Blindness.
If the Genre Savvy character attempts to apply the tropes of a different genre of story to their own situation, they're Wrong Genre Savvy. If their Genre Savviness becomes their undoing, that's Death by Genre Savviness. If a character uses his Genre Savviness just to make humorous observations, he's a Meta Guy. When characters are not consciously Genre Savvy but regularly act within the limitations of the genre they're in anyway, they are Functional Genre Savvy. If a character acts like a Genre Blind person due to their Genre Savviness, this is Contractual Genre Blindness. Compare with Medium Awareness where the character knows that they're in a story and what medium they are in. May result in You Watch Too Much X. Can lead to a "Clichéd Villain" Accusation. See also Thinks Like Pulp Sci-Fi. DIY Threat Detection may come into play.
Not to Be Confused with a character who has observed what works and what doesn't in their own world, which is Taught by Experience.
Super-Trope to Legally Savvy Crook.

Other examples:
- The Mitchells vs. the Machines: Katie has seen enough movies to know that in the apocalypse, you can't hide and eat your dog. That turns you into a Red Shirt. She tells her family that if they are the only survivors, they are the only ones who can save humanity. She then concocts a plan that is initially purely based on speculation about how the rogue AI works. Katie later predicts that going to the mall to enact their plan is probably going to play out like a zombie movie, and she ends up being right, albeit with Furbies and Roombas.
- Wreck-It Ralph: Everyone has Medium Awareness; the fact that a small percentage of the population doesn't is a plot point.
- Goddess Creation System: Xiaxi ingratiates herself to nobles and royalty with knowledge of otome games to pinpoint their weaknesses. For Mingluan, a devoted servant. For Mingyi, a woman who scorns his every advance. For Jun'er, a mysterious woman who wants nothing of him and ignores his affections.
- Pleasant Green Universe: In The Lovecraft Investigations' adaptation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, the narrator, Kennedy, investigates the titular character's hideout, and finds a secret trapdoor hidden under some garbage. She digs it free and opens it, discovering a ladder down to a dark, foreboding tunnel. At this Kennedy remarks to herself that she has "seen this movie" several times, so she is definitely not going down the tunnel alone, and declares that it will have to wait until she has gotten some back-up. She proceeds to accidentally drop her expensive recording device down the trapdoor, and grumbles that it does look she has to go down alone, but only to get the device back and she will get out as soon as she has picked it up. Of course, as soon as she is down there and gotten her hands on the recorder, the trapdoor suddenly slams shut.
- X Minus One: In "The C-Chute", Stuart describes Mullen's plan as something that you might see in a "video" (that is, a film).
- Exploring Lost Wads: Michael's replies to comments show that he's quite aware that his situation is similar to those of Digital Horror stories like SKY//BOX (2022). As an experienced Doom (1993) modder, he also does his best to examine every anomaly he encounters from a technical standpoint (which makes the things he can't explain all the more terrifying), and also opens every map he plays in SLADE in order to find secrets and abnormalities.
