Ending with a Scream (trope)
"That's AAAAAAAAAARGH folks!"
Kermit: Okay, Nadya, this is it! Your solo!
(Nadya prepares; interrupted by a The End card)
Nadya: KEEERMIIIIIIIIIIT!!!

Sometimes, endings are simply too emotional to be conveyed in final one-liners or concluding monologues. In these occasions, the story ends with the character venting their emotions in one almighty scream before we cut to the end credits.

The emotion being expressed in the scream can include everything from rage to grief, depending on the genre, but easily one of the most common is fear, with pain a close second. A native of the horror genre, this variant usually features the main character screaming as the not-at-all thwarted monster kills them or a Fate Worse than Death befalls them, with the screams sometimes even echoing across the end credits in the case of film and television.

Needless to say, it's very common for this trope to overlap with a Downer Ending, for even if the ending doesn't feature the main character dead or worse, characters overwhelmed with this much emotion rarely have anything good happening to them. If they’re lucky, this ending might be a cliffhanger that the next episode or installation will resolve. If not, the story ends on that scream and all the negativity it entails.

However, there are major exceptions to this rule, and most of them lie in lighter stories like comedies, in which the screams usually involve pain at slapstick injuries, comically overexaggerated anger, or even jubilation.

As for what's being screamed, it can feature the classic Big "NO!", a character's name howled at full volume, a deafening expletive, a series of howled obscenities, a cut-off swearword, or it need not be anything coherent at all, with the character being so overwhelmed with emotion that all they can do is scream unintelligibly.

Related to Defeat Catchphrase, which a character may wail on their way out of the story. These can overlap if the loser gets the final scene. Might result from a Trauma Button Ending, Here We Go Again!, or a Last-Second Joke Problem.

More serious examples may overlap with It All Ends in Tears, Bolivian Army Ending, or Gainax Ending, though not always.

Contrast Ends with a Smile.

Compare Screaming Cut to the Break, which is more about the endings of chapters rather than entire stories/episodes.

Not to be confused with And I Must Scream, which can overlap with characters being trapped in terrible endings but does not include literal screaming.

CAUTION: As this is an ending trope, unmarked spoilers are found below. You have been warned.

However, a crow flies down and grabs Skip with its feet, and the movie ends with Skip screaming as it carries him away.
  • The Blair Witch Project: In the finale, Heather and Mike are lured into a ruined house in the middle of the woods, during which Mike goes running off to the basement in search of Josh. The movie ends with Ángela crawling towards the camera, before an unseen being grabs her by the legs, leaving her shrieking in terror as she's dragged off into the darkness.
  • Saint Maud: The film appears to end with Maud smiling as she transforms into an angel and ascends to heaven. Smash to Black. However, it then cuts back for a split second to show that in reality, Maud is actually screaming in agony as she burns to death — and then cut to the credits.

    • Saw III: In the climax, Jeff slits Jigsaw's throat, only for another tape to reveal that Jeff's daughter has been kidnapped, and the only way to get her back is to play another game. Worse still, as Jigsaw dies, his Dead Man's Switch goes off, sealing doors all over his hideout and triggering Lynn's bomb collar. Trapped and outgunned, Jeff lets out a Big "NO!" over his wife's decapitated body, and then we cut to the end credits.
    • Saw V: Detective Strahm seemingly captures Hoffman in his own box of broken glass, only for the walls of the room to begin closing in around him, courtesy of a pre-arranged trap. The film ends with Strahm howling in agony as the room slowly crushes him to death and Hoffman is lowered to safety.
    • Saw VI: Hoffman ends up getting put in the original reverse bear trap by Jill for sabotaging Amanda and getting Jigsaw killed. However, in the finale, Hoffman is able to pull yet another Karma Houdini and break out of the trap before it can kill him, though it rips his cheek open in the process, the film ending with Hoffman letting out a Skyward Scream of pain.
    • Saw 3D: The climax features Hoffman being captured by Dr Gordon and chained up in the bathroom, with any means of escaping the manacle deliberately removed — so unlike Gordonnote , Adam note  and Eric note , he really will die here. However, because Jane lives in a world ravaged by nuclear war, the baby is severely mutated and likely stillborn. Jane studies the baby for a moment, opens her mouth to scream, and... cut to credits.

Eventually Matt managed to escape and his life returns to normal... only for the final chapter to reveal his parents have a "surprise" for him, that they've decided to move Matt's bed into the guest room and let him sleep there after all.
