Complimenting the Transformed

Go To

"I approve of your new face, Doctor. So much more like mine."

People can have a variety of reactions to seeing someone who has transformed. It can range from fear, confusion, concern, or even mockery. In some situations, however, the transformed character might become an object of admiration, verbal or otherwise.

What exactly people find admirable about such transformations can differ:

  1. If the new form is some kind of Super Mode or big, strong creature, onlookers may admire the power represented by it.
  2. A character subjected to an Overnight Age-Up, Fountain of Youth, Temporary Bulk Change, etc., may now be seen as more attractive than before. In the case of the age transformations specifically, this may lead to an Age-Down Romance.
  3. The new form can be considered an aesthetic improvement where Beauty Is Relative. Non-humans who become human may receive admiration from actual humans, especially if Hot in Human Form. Conversely, humans who become non-humans may receive admiration from members of the species they were turned into, especially if the latter think Humans Are Ugly.
  4. If shapeshifting in the setting is a learnable, improvable skill rather than a passive and/or inherited ability, shapeshifters might be praised for their aptitude after a successful transformation.
  5. In more negative contexts, villainous and/or monstrous characters may appreciate it when heroic characters change into less heroic-looking forms. There can be a fuzzy overlap with Taunting the Transformed here, especially if the admirer is known for malicious sarcasm. In particularly dangerous situations, villains might find transformed heroes newly useful for their evil aims (e.g. when Fattening the Victim through transformation).

Supertrope to Attractive Bent-Gender (and Jumping the Gender Barrier by proxy) and Attractive Bent Species (and Equalizing the Interspecies Romance by proxy). Often overlaps with Admiring the Abomination, One's Freakiness, Another's Beauty, and You Sexy Beast when the new form would usually be considered freaky. Contrast with Reveling in the New Form (where it's the transformed character who loves the transformation), Bemoaning the New Body (where it's the transformed character who hates the transformation), and Prefers the True Form.

    • Man-Wolf is a werewolf who got stuck in wolf form after the Moon got destroyed during the Tenka'ichi Budokai Tournament and laments how he looks now. • A Filler episode of the Dragon Ball Z anime has Captain Ginyu (in Bulma's body) seeing Frieza's final transformation and praising how great and powerful his leader had become. This leaves Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo bemused since they don't yet realize that it's not actually Bulma.

  • If Wishes Were Ponies...:
    • Equestrians who go through the portal tree end up becoming human while on Earth (though they eventually learn how to turn into ponies again). Because they're all Hot in Human Form (and constantly forget to wear underwear), they get a lot of positive attention.
    • Harry is a delayed example. When he becomes a unicorn in Equestria (and later learns how to switch back and forth between human and pony on Earth), not a lot of comments are made about his appearance due to him looking like a normal (if malnourished) unicorn colt. Once he transforms for the first time at school, though, everyone is head over heels commenting how cute he is (something that happens to the other Equestrians, as well).
    • In the sequel, Discord (up to his usual tricks) approaches Luna Lovegood when she's getting on the train for her first year at Hogwarts and makes her an Equestrian hybrid: half Crystal Pony, half Night Pony (remarking that neither of those Equestrian races had yet been invited to Hogwarts). The other Equestrian students (especially Harry) find her form beautiful... though Luna takes a while to figure out what exactly happened.

  • In the Yo-kai Watch fanfic A Ruff Reunion, Manjimutt reunites with his daughters and explains that he only left them because he was afraid of how they'd react to him being a human-faced dog. They both say they still would've loved him, and Penny points out that he's cute in this new form anyway.

    Films — Animation
  • Pinocchio (1940): At the end of the film, when Pinocchio gives his life to save Geppetto, the Blue Fairy not only restores his life, but turns him into a human boy. When Pinocchio realizes this, he immediately tells Geppetto, who leaps for joy and is just as happy as his son.
  • Rise of the Guardians: Downplayed - when, due to kids not believing in him, the Easter Bunny starts to look less anthropomorphic, Jamie is disappointed that he's not "cool" anymore, but he also calls him cute.
  • Shrek: At the end of the film, when Shrek kisses Fiona and she turns into her true self, she finds that she's instead been turned into an ogre permanently. She nearly breaks down, stating that "[she's] supposed to be beautiful." Shrek, however, looks at her with nothing but love and admiration.
    Shrek: But you are beautiful.
  • The Sword in the Stone: During her Villain Song, Madam Mim shows off her shapeshifting talents to Arthur, concluding by transforming herself into a beautiful woman and dancing around the house. Arthur is left gawping at her in rapt silence, too twitterpated to do anything more than stare, and only changes expression when Mim starts tickling him under the chin, prompting him to smile bashfully.
  • Time Masters: Onyx the Digeed of Gnaz demonstrates his shapeshifting powers in the mission briefing by turning into a vase of flowers. Awestruck onlookers remark "It even has the smell!" • Turning Red: After Mei becomes a red panda for the first time, she expects her friends to be scared of her, but they gush over how adorable she is. Priya comments that she's always wanted a tail, while Abby melts over how fluffy Mei is now.

    Films — Live-Action
  • Beauty and the Beast (2017): Downplayed. After the Beast is transformed back into a human, Belle is obviously relieved that he's alive and uncursed but teases him that he would look good with a beard.
  • Captain America: The First Avenger: After Steve gets the serum and becomes a Super-Soldier, he not only gets a long Shirtless Scene, but every woman who sees him is clearly Eating the Eye Candy. Later, when he rescues Bucky from the prison camp, his best friend comments on it and asks if it's permanent.
  • My Favorite Martian: Tim tells Lizzie that he likes the alien form she took after chewing the Veenox 7 gum. Keep in mind this form is huge and scary, and he watched her eat a fleeing man whole and alive mere seconds before.

  • Orlando (1992): Some years after meeting Archduke Harry for the first time in Constantinople - and then changing sex - Orlando happens to run into Archduke Harry again at the poets' gathering. Not only does Harry actually recognize her, but he reacts with open infatuation, calling Orlando "whether male or female, the pink, the pearl, and the perfection of your sex." She is not appreciative, since the Archduke is an Abhorrent Admirer proposing marriage at the worst possible time: Orlando is at risk of losing her house due to being both legally dead and female (and therefore unable to own property), and Harry is pouncing on this as an opportunity to offer marriage just so she'll have a home. As such, Orlando decides she'd prefer being a homeless spinster and runs off.
  • Teen Wolf: Scott reveals himself as a werewolf to his buddy Stiles by transforming in front of him, where Stiles states that he is beautiful.
  • The Thirteenth Year: After Cody turns thirteen, he finds that he's suddenly developing scales on his hands and feet, along with odd powers. Jess, his biology tutor-turned-friend, finds his new powers impressive and helps him learn he's turning into a merman.
  • Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets: During Bubble's burlesque Shapeshifter Showoff Session, Valerian is looking on with a mixture of fascination and barely concealed lust. Sometimes, when we cut back to him, he can be smiling at the latest fetishistic transformations, sometimes tilting his head to the side in astonishment, but more often than not just staring with an expression that suggests that all his blood has been drained into the lower half of his body.
  • Wicked: For Good: In the end, Elphaba reunites with her lover, Fiyero, who’s been turned into the Scarecrow. Elphaba tells him he’s beautiful, Fiyero tells her she doesn’t need to lie to him, and Elphaba responds "It’s not lying. It’s looking at things another way."

Downplayed in that, while Magneto does prefer to socialize with mutants, he's mostly taunting Kelly about becoming a mutant.
    • X-Men: First Class: After Dr. Hank McCoy analyzes Mystique's genetic code as a possible antidote for mutant cells, the test backfires on him. Instead of attacking the mutant cells, the serum enhances them. Now, instead of simply having hands for feet, he turns into the blue-furred Beast. Erik Lehnsherr, the future Magneto, attempts to cheer him up by saying he looks great but Hank responds poorly, nearly throttling Erik. Havok, who had bullied the nerdy Hank before, also genuinely praises the new look.
Erik: You never looked better, man.
(Hank grabs Erik by the throat)
      Charles: Hank!
      Hank: Don't mock me!
Charles: Hank, put him down immediately, please. Hank! Hank!
      (Hank lets go)
      Erik: I wasn't.
Havok: Even I gotta admit you look pretty bad-ass.

    Literature
  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: When the Duchess's baby turns into a pig, she comments that he was an Ugly Baby but looks handsome as a pig.
  • Animorphs:
    • Most of the time, morphing is a pretty horrific-looking process that the team treats as a chore in order to get to the good stuff. However, Cassie is an estreen, able to morph smoother, faster, and less disgusting, to the point that she can even make it look beautiful. For instance, in The Visitor, while demorphing from an osprey, Cassie leaves the raptor's wings for last so she ends up looking almost angelic, much to the awe and surprise of her fellow Animorphs - plus a little exasperation from Marco.
Marco: Great. When we morph we look like some mad scientist's genetic experiment gone totally crazy. And Cassie gets to look like an angel.
    • Ax is naturally an Andalite, an alien species resembling a blue centaur with no mouth, extra eyes on stalks, and a bladed tail. When he first morphs into a human, he combines the DNA of Jake, Marco, Rachel, and Cassie to construct a unique human form that, thanks to its Ambiguously Brown, somewhat androgynous look, the other Animorphs find uncommonly attractive.
  • Axtara: In Magic and Mischief, Delightful Dragon Axtara and Tomboy Princess Mia come across an Ancient orb that swaps their species. Once they get over the shock of what happened, the Stumbling in the New Form, and the panic when it seems they'll be stuck that way for the time being, each admits that the other girl looks attractive by each species standards. Mia says that Axtara's medium-brown skin, Mystical White Hair, and slender physique give her an "exotic" beauty, while Axtara says Mia's golden scales, double set of horns, and muscular physique make her an attractive dragon. Mia even warns Axtara that she'll be a Dude Magnet when she goes out and about like this, and sure enough many of the men and boys in Elnacier become smitten with "Lady Vayo".
  • Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator: When the grandparents (except Grandpa Joe) take too much of a youth pill called Wonka-Vite, Mrs. Bucket says that Grandma Josephine looks cuter as a baby, and asks her husband if he agrees. He almost says yes, before saying no because he wants them to be grown back up.
  • George's Marvellous Medicine: When George uses the "medicine" on a chicken to make it grow huge, Mr. Kranky loves it because they could make a lot of food from an egg laid by a giant chicken. He wants to use it on the pigs, too, to make lots of bacon.
  • The Knight in Screaming Armor: In one path, you and your cousins make the mistake of tampering with a magical clock that begins to regress the three of you to infancy. Thankfully, you're able to save the day before Death by De-aging sets in, and you even manage to restore your cousins to their original ages... but you're left stuck as a baby. Worse still, Abbey seems very taken with you in your current state, cooing about "cute" you are and rocking you in her arms. Worst of all, you're now effectively helpless and unable to communicate with Abbey and Kip, so you're condemned to either grow up the normal way or literally be a baby forever. This plot path ends with you still in Abbey's arms, still being cradled even as you bawl your head off at how unfair this is.
  • Kokoro Connect: When Inaba turns back into a kid for the first time, Nagase and Yui gush over how cute she looks like this. This makes Inaba, who has also regressed mentally and emotionally, quite bashful.
  • Magic Shop: In Jennifer Murdley's Toad, after Jennifer is turned into a toad, her toad companion Bufo compliments her when he says she won't have any problem finding someone to kiss her and become a toad in her place, because she's "an exceptionally good-looking toad." Jennifer (who's rather sensitive about her looks, thinking of her natural form as ugly and her toad form as just as bad) doesn't take this well, to Bufo's confusion.
  • In the kids' book The Three Little Witches, when Jelly the cat remembers having been turned into a frog in the past, Fidget, an actual frog, says, "You looked great as a frog!"

  • Witherward: During her exploration of Witherward, Ilsa witnesses a public gathering in which Changelings show off exotic shapes for the crowd, who cheer and applaud every new transformation. Ilsa, who was only able to get a career on the stage back in Muggle London by using her powers to help her boss's illusions, is awestruck by both the sight and the sheer openness of it.

  • Doctor Who:
    • In "The Magician's Apprentice", when Davros reunites with the Doctor, he expresses approval of the latter's "new face" because he feels the two of them now look more similar (all the previous Doctors that Davros had seen before were young, cheerful men, whereas Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor is an older, dour-faced man).
    • In "The Giggle", the Fourteenth Doctor is zapped with a galvanic laser, but his regeneration goes differently from prior ones. He bi-generates into the Fifteenth, played by Ncuti Gatwa, much to the surprise and appreciation of the witnessing Donna Noble and Melanie Bush.
  • Farscape:
    • In "DNA Mad Scientist," Aeryn's attempts to buy a genetic map to a Sebacean colony from Namtar end with the Mad Scientist secretly dosing her with a serum of Pilot DNA, resulting in a slow transformation into a Pilot. Trying to confront Namtar over it just gets Aeryn being captured and imprisoned; during this time, Namtar is full of compliments for Aeryn's mutations, admiring the development of her Pilot sensory abilities, and encouraging her not to be "modest" in revealing herself. Of course, this is mixed with a lot of gloating, because Namtar is planning to harvest Aeryn for the most valuable traits that he can imbue himself with.
Aeryn: Is it necessary to reduce me to the final stage?
Namtar: You are in no way being diminished. You are being given a gift: you are experiencing a level of intellectual processing few beings ever approach.
Aeryn: I feel what you describe. But... I am slipping away. I feel that too.
Namtar: You must be willing to push off from the riskless shore in order to reach heady new lands.
Aeryn: But as soon as my body reaches the saturation point, you will take the DNA features you desire and discard the rest.
Namtar: (smirking) I look forward to experiencing the insights you obviously already possess.

Crichton spends this scene looking more and more aroused by the performance until he excitedly asks if she can turn into Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. By way of retaliation, Aeryn turns into Nancy Regan, to Crichton's abject horror.
  • Stargate SG-1: In "Meridian", after spending the entire episode dying of radiation sickness, Daniel Jackson Ascends on what would have been his deathbed, his body transforming into an abstract shape composed entirely of dazzling white light. • Sonic Unleashed:
    • The game's Downer Beginning sees Eggman successfully suck the Chaos energy out of Sonic and use it to free Dark Gaia, with the unintentional side effect of transforming Sonic into the Werehog. • In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, Sonic’s Werehog form also gets more genuine compliments from Louie Montaine and Li’l Kate. Louie says Sonic’s Werehog form is "fabulous", and comments on how manly his arms are. Li’l Kate calls Sonic’s Werehog form "hot stuff" and said she totally digs his arms.
  • Sunless Skies: After the fact example; the Fortunate Navigator is all but stated out loud to be a trans man. When his personal quest leads you and him to Death's Door, one of the Devils working there immediately recognizes the transformation the Fortunate Navigator has undergone - and more importantly, the effect it has had on his soul - and compliments him on it.
"Your circumstances were a poor fit for your soul, so you changed your circumstances. A neat trick. Man fits you much better."

Gil calls in Blood Knight Bangladesh DuPree to help subdue him, and has to break it to her that her crush has become so monstrous. Luckily for him (and Vole), Bang is a Nightmare Fetishist and considers the new form "gorgeous":

This only enrages Kassen, who tries to strangle Lopin for not understanding that he has ruined Kassen's life. • Parodied in Adventure Time: Peppermint Butler helps a would be suitor for Princess Bubblegum woo the Princess by striking a deal with the demon to make the suitor more irresistible. • The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3: In "Recycled Koopa", the Koopa family sends enchanted garbage through a Warp Pipe to New York City.
