An Apex Predator

Go To

15 years ago, a strange pod had landed in Earth. 5 years ago, Izuku Midoriya disappeared. Now, as Momo Yaoyorozu starts her first year at UA, things seem to go well when she reunites with her old friend.

But with an extremely dangerous Vigilante running about who doesn't hesitate killing villains, Momo is left with a legacy to uphold, a society to honor, all while her old friend is the Vigilante that roams the planet.

An Apex Predator is a My Hero Academia fanfic that gives the world an extremely powerful vigilante while the heiress of the Yaoyorozu family has to balance a legacy and her future on her back.

The fic can be found here.

An Apex Predator contains the following tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: The claims frozen_flame (Shoto Todoroki) made regarding Apex being All Might's illegitimate child with a powerful villain were honestly funny to Apex.
  • Adaptational Badass: As part of the Adaptational Species Change, Izuku is far more powerful and dangerous compared to canon.
  • Adaptational Explanation: In canon, no one knows how Quirks came into existence. Here, Dr. Xeno, an alien scientist, had released a disease on Earth he created that caused the Quirk phenomena that plagues the world today.
  • Adaptational Modesty: Momo's hero costume is far more modest compared to the canonical one. AI generated art in Chapter 15 shows her in her hero costume.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • In canon, Izuku viewed Bakugou as a future hero and friend, despite the latter's toxic personality. Here, Izuku grows to resent and loathe Bakugou, even going as far as to promise that if Bakugou tries his stunt again, he would rip his arms off.
    • Izuku and Momo are childhood friends and eventual love interests.
    • Izuku and All Might's canonical relationships are nonexistent. Instead, All Might forms a mentoring relationship with Momo.
  • Adaptational Species Change: Izuku is a human in canon. Here, he's a Bellivore, an artificial super-alien created by the mysterious Dr. Xeno.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Since Izuku is a Bellivore with an Adaptive Ability, he can effortlessly adapt and evolve thanks to his alien heritage.
    • Momo gets One for All in this fic, and is able to handle it better than Izuku did in canon.
  • Adaptive Ability: Thanks to his Bellivorian nature, Izuku is able to adapt and evolve against all forms of threats. So far, he has the following.
  • Asshole Victim: Everyone Apex kills, no one will miss.
  • Attempted Rape:
    • When Momo was 13, she was kidnapped by two crooks and while they were waiting for the ransom, decided to 'have fun' with Momo. Apex proceeded to kill both the would-be rapists.
    • This happens again at the USJ with her and Tsuyu after a villain with a Medusa style Quirk paralyzes them. Again, a now very pissed off Apex saves her and Tsuyu.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: One of the most chilling things about Apex is that he almost never speaks.
  • Blessed with Suck: Izuku's telepathy trait is useful to read the minds of everyone. Unfortunately, it also means he can tell if people are mentally undressing him like Mina.
  • Chick Magnet: Izuku is extremely attractive (when he’s not brutally annihilating villains).
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Izuku is subjected to this repeatedly for days before he breaks free, kills his captor and escapes.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: There are a lot of them on Apex. These ranged from him being an angel of God (Ibara Shiozaki’s opinion), a vengeful dark god (Fumikage Tokoyami’s opinion), or in one case, the literal bastard child of All Might and a powerful female villain (Shoto Todoroki’s opinion).
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: All Might, Edgeshot, Endeavor, Miruko and Ryukyu versus Apex. Apex effortlessly beats them all without even trying.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Inko is killed by agents of All For One when Izuku was ten.
    • Izuku viciously kills Muscular by tearing him apart limb from limb.
    • Many of the USJ villains perish in the USJ.
  • The Dreaded: Apex is the name of a vigilante that no villain who crossed him survived. When Trapezius Headgear sees Apex, he panics and begs for his life before Apex blasts his skull to dust. Even Heroes are terrified of him after he effortlessly bested All Might and four other Top Heroes in combat.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Momo's parents were shocked at the 'costume' she was given and decided to invest in making a costume that mixed modern functionality and modesty.
  • Fangirl: Momo is a closeted supporter of Apex, even when her mentor has shown distrust towards his methods.
  • Helicopter Parents: In a way, Momo's parents are this, especially given that their daughter was kidnapped and nearly raped, only being rescued by a vigilante.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Apex scares the living daylights out of every villain he hunts.
  • In Spite of a Nail: All Might still wastes all his hero time before the USJ class begins, but it was largely spent trying to chase down Apex.
  • Oh, Crap!: All the thugs in the mountain range promptly panic when the Medusa villain's head is reduced to a charred stump. The rest panic further when they realize Apex is in the area, and he's angry.
    • When the unscattered hero students hear that Apex is in the vicinity, they are also nervous and afraid, as the vigilante can fight All Might and win.
    • Kirishima and Bakugou are left genuinely uneased at Apex coldly killing all the villains they knocked out.
    • Shigaraki is left in disbelief and fear the moment he realizes who's grabbing his wrist.
  • Riddle for the Ages: No one knows what Apex's quirk is, given he can fly, has laser vision and super strength.
  • Single-Specimen Species: Izuku is the first and only Bellivore in the universe.
  • Taken for Granite: The villain with the Medusa style quirk allows her to paralyze anyone as long as she was looking at them, which she used against Momo effortlessly. Apex blasting the villain's head off removes that issue.
