Jax

Characters in The Amazing Digital Circus: Jax
"I'm fine with doing whatever, as long as I get to see funny things happen to people."
"You sure you can handle me in all my glory?"
Voiced by: Michael Kovach (English)Other dubs

One of the main protagonists, a mischievous young man trapped as a purple rabbit, Jax is entirely focused on his own personal gain and enjoyment, retreating into the absurdism that the Circus promotes. His tendency to wreak havoc drives other players away from him, but there's more to his attitude than meets the eye.

    A-D
  • Absurd Phobia: In "Untitled", it's revealed that Jax is afraid of corn. He explains in the following episode that he's unsettled by all of its pods, comparing them to egg sacs, and he's equally disturbed by pomegranates or the image of "a bunch of little holes". Pomni posits that he might be trypophobic. Makes sense, as the abstracted are always visually represented by various eyes and Jax lost Ribbit and Kaufmo to abstraction.
    Jax: What's that?
Pomni: The fear of lots of little holes.
    Jax: [shuddering] Ew.
  • Accidental Hero: Despite being far from heroic, he's ironically responsible for putting Pomni through situations that helped her improve somewhat or display her more noble traits:
    • In "Candy Carrier Chaos!", he throws Pomni directly into the confrontation with the bandits, which leads to her and Gummigoo bonding.
    • In "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor", him throwing Gangle's mask into the scary door leads to both Pomni and Kinger falling in and becoming closer.
    • In "Beach Episode", his decision to press the red button that would supposedly keep the players trapped proves to unintentionally be the right one as the whole "escape" was a ploy of Caine's to test whether or not the players actually liked him and the Circus, and considering his attitude when pressed about his actions, it's for the best they weren't sent to Shrimp Town instead.
  • Allergic to Routine: If there's anything that seems to rile up Jax more than anything, it's monotony; he hides it usually well, but as "Fast Food Masquerade" shows, Jax cannot handle being forced into a routine without having a neurotic reaction that simmers between Tranquil Fury and Grin of Rage as he glues his eyeballs to the nearest clock, waiting for the moment that the adventure, and thereby his shift, will end.
  • All for Nothing: In Episode 7, the "Beach Episode", he makes the decision of keeping everyone stuck in the Circus and shutting down what looked like their only chance instead of leaving. While the choice was pointless in the end since it turned out to be another one of Caine's adventures, Jax indirectly revealed that he wants to remain trapped with everyone over nothing.
  • All Take and No Give: Due to his raging self-centeredness, all of Jax' relationships revolve around the other players doing whatever he wants without complaint and be the targets of his pranks and bullying. Meanwhile, he refuses to return any favors, consider their happiness or well-being, and goes out of his way to ruin other people's fun if they make him do something he doesn't like. The prime example being Jax expecting Gangle to always be submissive and willing to take all of his physical and emotional torment without her retaliating, and him doing nothing to make her feel better or safe in exchange.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Jax’s avatar is a bright purple rabbit.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Jax never expresses sexual interest in any of the other players or does anything to explicitly confirm his sexual orientation. However, he's versed enough in queer subculture to tease Zooble for being a bartender and a tattooist, and the way he jokingly chides Pomni for allegedly flirting with him ("Now THAT'S what everybody wants to see. A STRAIGHT couple!") lends credence to this.
  • Ambiguous Situation
    • Immediately after seeing Kaufmo's abstracted, he notices a bowling ball, picks it up, and says, "Oh I've been looking for this. Thanks for keeping an eye on it Kaufy." It's unclear whether the two of them mutually owned it or if it belonged to Jax and he loaned it to Kaufmo, trusting him to watch it. Either interpretation suggests the two were close, which Beach Episode eventually confirms is the case.
    • Did he play a role in Ribbit's and Kaufmo's abstractions (accidentally) or did he just fail to help them when they needed it? He remarks people who abstract "aren't pleasant to be around", which suggest Ribbit and/or Kaufmo pushed him away or that he failed to see the warning signs before they were gone.
    • Jax seems to have undergone some sort of traumatic event in the real world, with it even being implied at one point he doesn’t have anybody waiting to see him again. The question is: did he do something, or did horrific things happen to him?
    • When he had a Panic Attack and pressed the red button in Beach episode, was this actually his own choice or did Caine manipulate his mind and cause him to do it? Given his accusations against Caine immediately afterwards, even Jax himself might not know for sure.
  • Animal Motifs: He is a human in the form of talking rabbit, fitting with his mischievous personality and penchant for viewing everything as either part of a show or game. Interestingly, he also has a cat motif that is especially shown in episode 5. He's a carnivore (best seen when he's mauling Rhinoceros Gangle and his own evil doppelganger), his pupils are verticalnote  and they shrink several times, and he's scared of ears of corn much like cats are scared of cucumbers. His personality also fits the Cats Are Mean and Cats Are Snarkers stereotypes, and he is often shown with a Cheshire Cat Grin.
  • Anti-Role Model: With his general lack of empathy, self-centeredness, pettiness, and being quite a bully, he is definitely NOT someone you should look up to.
  • Anti-Villain: Jax is a bully and a Jerkass who goes out of his way to make the circus miserable for everyone and is outright abusive towards Gangle and Ragatha, but he's not exactly evil either. He's a traumatized, mentally ill young man (the youngest of the Circus at 22) who takes on a solipsistic attitude and drives people away so he won't be hurt when anyone else abstracts. Even outside of this, Jax is not above the occasional Pet the Dog moment as well as having genuine standards, such as saving Kinger and Gangle from abstracted Kaufmo or genuinely going out of his way to help the other players' attempt to escape the circus in “Beach Episode”. The show itself even Lampshades this fact by having Jax be outright offended by the notion that he's a "villain", showing that even if he doesn't want people to like him, he doesn't like the idea of being seen as evil either.
  • Appearance Angst: Feeling particularly stressed, Jax expresses displeasure over his avatar by insulting his own reflection.
    Jax: God, you look stupid.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Delivers one to Caine in episode 7 that throws everything he's done into question.
Jax: You dirty liar! You scumbag! You made me... urgh, you got in my head. You just lie about everything, don't you?! You CAN mess with our minds too, can't you?! The Stupid Sauce, the vegan thing... God knows what else!
  • Ascended to Carnivorism: While he is a rabbit, he is not the least bit happy when Zooble and the others force him to go vegan during the adventure. However, this trope is justified since he is actually a human who turned into a rabbit.
  • Ash Face: Just as he's about to shoot Ragatha and take her last life in the game, she pulls the Finger in a Barrel gag in desperation. In a moment of Toon Physics, this causes the revolver to backfire into Jax's face, scorching it black and taking one of his lives. He shakes off most of the ash before shooting her with another gun and then rubs it off completely before Pomni sees.
  • Asshole Victim
    • In "Fast Food Masquerade", he's forcibly sent to a room, restrained to a chair, and forced to watch an "employee revaluation" video made by Gangle. It's essential to recognize that, given Jax's nature, not to mention the breaking point for Gangle was his admission that he prefers her when she's sad, he really brought it on himself.
    • Subverted in “Beach Episode”, where he almost abstracts but is accidentally saved at the last second by Pomni and Ragatha. Despite Jax’s role as The Bully, it’s made very clear abstraction is a fate absolutely nobody, not even him, should have to suffer, with Zooble and Ragatha even wanting to help him despite their hatred of him.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Rabbits are depicted as guile tricksters in mythology, and Jax is a cheeky prankster. He also looks similar to characters of early ages of animation, and he's the one to embrace his Toon Transformation, can freely utilize Toon Physics, and treats the misadventures of others as a comedy show. As of later episodes, he begins to get characterized by his tendency to run away and hide from things, like how rabbits often do to survive in the wild. Both from his feelings of secretly caring about the other players and his guilt for how he treats them deep down, but also from something in the real world, that traumatizes him so much he’d rather stay in the circus than go back.
  • At Least I Admit It: As violent as Jax is, he is still open about how much he enjoys making others suffer. This is a contrast to Caine, who’s far more dangerous than he paints himself to be despite being more affable to the players.
  • Attention Whore:
    • He is very happy to have a marketable vinyl figurine made of himself.
Jax: What can I say? People paying money to just admire me all day sounded like a sweet gig.
    • More broadly, "Fast Food Masquerade" revealed that Jax needs to act out in order to maintain his usual chipper attitude. When he's forced to behave and not be the center of attention, he quickly becomes a surly, listless shell of himself.
  • Author Avatar: Gooseworx has stated that Jax is the character she relates to the most in the series, and even straight up calls him her "self insert" in a Tweet.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Downplayed. On one hand, Jax was confirmed to be the youngest of the players (aged 22 and younger than Zooble, who's the same age, by six months). On the other hand, he's far from being a cute child pampered by his friends; instead, he's a manchild in the most destructive way possible and the least liked member of the circus.
  • Backhanded Apology: When he realizes he went too far telling Pomni he'd forget about her if she abstracted, he tries to "comfort" her by claiming it was just a joke.
  • Bad Liar: When Jax gets a personal question or if the stakes are high enough, he'll lie instinctively but be too jittery to do it effectively.
    • In "Untitled", he claims Pomni's right that he doesn't care what others like after he questions whether Gangle can be happy or not. He says she's right that he doesn't but Pomni doesn’t believe it.
    • He severely lashes out at the end of "They All Get Guns!", insisting that he's a sadistic bully and nothing more, and that any connections that Pomni made with him were only him pretending to be nice so she'd let her guard down. No one, not Pomni, not the audience, not even Jax himself, believes it.
    • In "Beach Episode", his attempts to feign interest in Caine to distract him are incredibly obvious. He's both too on edge and apathetic to put on a convincing front, but Caine is both tone-deaf and desperate enough to believe Jax actually cares. Or rather, already knows what Jax is doing beforehand because it's exactly what Caine planned.
  • Bait the Dog: Downplayed. Most of "They All Get Guns!" is dedicated to humanizing him through his Odd Friendship with Pomni, with the two getting along as they indulge in being the "villains" of the game together. The ending has Jax - terrified of a genuine connection - lash out and his usual insults and obnoxiousness become much more hurtful and unvarnished than they were depicted prior. While both Pomni and the narrative still treat him sympathetically, it's also a reminder that Jax is a genuinely nasty person even if he has a Hidden Heart of Gold. Even before that point, Gangle's anxieties over his bullying of her and the much healthier outlook she develops after splitting with him highlights how, no matter how Laughably Evil he is or how deep his Hidden Depths are, Jax is a genuine nasty and toxic influence who the rest of the players have good reason to hate.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: He is a rabbit and his usual digital outfit only has overalls and gloves but no footwear.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: In The Amazing Digital Circus But smol, he believes the Void is "Heaven", only to be disappointed upon seeing the others, remarking that it's "Hell". Seconds later, each of his friends ends up frozen thanks to Caine, and he's truly horrified at the sight of it.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Despite embracing Comedic Sociopathy as a virtue, it's all but outright stated that this mindset is a maladaptive coping mechanism that doesn't bring him real joy and only alienates himself from everyone else at his own expense. His incredibly mean spirited remarks to Pomni during their argument in Episode 6 is shown to mentally torture him. Word of Saint Paul even says he wishes he could be a villain but is actually misunderstood, to an extent even he doesn’t know. In "Beach Episode", while the other players have fun together on the beach, Jax is instead sulking off on his own, being in a bout of depression, and even nearly ends up abstracting too.
  • Beneath the Mask: Jax pretends he doesn't care about being trapped and enjoys his time in the circus but "They All Get Guns!" shows Jax himself does hate being trapped, is insecure over his appearance and does seem to care for the others but won't form any attachments due to fear of losing them to abstraction.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Jax gets uncomfortably nasty and heated whenever he thinks someone is blaming him for his friends' abstraction or accuses him of being "the bad guy". The former subject causes him to become unusually hostile and livid in a more genuine manner than usual and he clearly believes everyone secretly does, which leads to his fallout with Pomni when he thinks she's accusing him of it. As for the latter, it's one of his biggest gripes with Ragatha and leads to him unloading the clip of his revolver into her in "They All Get Guns" when she accuses him of wanting to "corrupt" Pomni.
    • Despite how much he lives to harass and abuse others with his pranks, Jax can't stand being the butt of the joke. That said, he usually doesn't react with much more than bitter grousing. However, when he's forced into the maid outfit, Jax is utterly livid. Between his pupils shrinking so much his iris is seen for the first and only time so far, trying to genuinely assault Gangle (who started the vote), screaming at everyone and hyperventilating from sheer fury, and getting even madder when Zooble cracks they "thought he'd be into it", it's made clear that it has struck a deep nerve.
    • The end of "Beach Episode" has him at the most apeshit and angry he has ever been when Caine reveals everything the group went through up to that point was just another adventure. This includes him going Laughing Mad and absolutely tearing into Caine, complete with Berserker Tears. This is the most emotion he's shown in the show.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: A more sympathetic example than most. As Word of Saint Paul points out, Jax desperately tries to convince Pomni and even himself he’s a heartless monster who only causes suffering for fun and sees the others as “playthings”. But ultimately, he’s a broken, pathetic young adult who isn’t as in control or uncaring as he wishes he truly was. The ending of “Beach Episode” throughly established that between Jax and Caine, the latter is actually much, much worse than Jax could ever hope to be.
  • Black Dot Pupils: Well, black square pupils actually, but it still counts. It's confirmed in "They All Get Guns" that they're actually rectangles when he's calm and "fronting", squares when he's not calm, and scribbles when he comes apart; none of the other players notice this, not even Pomni.
  • Blatant Lies
    • When Zooble questions in “Beach Episode” if he has anyone waiting for him on the outside, Jax’s hesitation before answering shows he clearly doesn’t.
    • Later in the same episode, Jax is seen staring at a snow globe that is heavily implied to have been a past adventure he went on with Ribbit and Kaufmo with a sad expression. When Pomni asks him if he’s alright, he claims that he is but it’s clearly not the truth. His voice from the snow globe can even be heard saying “I’m not!” right before he answers.
  • Blood Knight: "Candy Carrier Chaos!" shows that Jax gets very excited about violence, ending up annoyed when none of it happened during the episode's adventure. So he arranges for the adventure to have his desired violent climax regardless by covertly leaving the gates to the kingdom unlocked, allowing the Fudge to enter and wreak havoc to his utter glee. During his two picks for adventures in "Untitled", he casts himself as a hunter and a mad bomber respectively.
  • Boss's Unfavorite Employee: Unsurprisingly, he became the unfavorite employee in "Fast Food Masquerade!" as Gangle purposely gives him the most annoying tasks and makes his day worse. Justified since he usually bullies Gangle for the sake of his own amusement.
  • Bound and Gagged: He spends most of the third episode tied up and gagged in a wagon, heavily implied to be courtesy of Ragatha. This keeps him from interfering with her and Gangle's tea party with Martha Mildenhall, causing them to complete the "Pacifist Route" of their side of the Mildenhall Manor adventure.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Jax has a habit of doing this, whether it's in episode one where he pulls an Aside Glance to snidely tell the viewers "She still thinks this is a dream", or in episode three where he directly asks the viewers what they think happens when he holds his breath. He addresses this directly in episode six as a part of his "archetype." It's deconstructed and subverted as this is merely a symptom of what Jax does to try and justify his own mentality, he's merely pretending that there's an audience he can interact with, but doesn't have any awareness of the actual fourth wall and is merely another example of his poor coping methods, as such his actions come off as strange and off-putting to anyone else.
  • Breakout Character: Jax was easily the fan favorite character upon the Pilot’s release, thanks to his pitch-perfect comedic timing and Michael Kovach’s charismatic performance, being the most heavily marketed character alongside Pomni. While he did become more divisive after the release of episode 2, later episodes exploring his character on a deeper level and showing he’s far more complex and nuanced than he initially appeared to be helped him win back his popularity, to the point where he won the real life Favorite Character polls, cementing him as the most popular character in the series. On This Very Wiki, he became the first character to get an individual page.
  • Break the Haughty:
    • "Fast Food Masquerade" really puts him through the wringer because not only is he forced to be a good employee under Gangle (his favorite victim) or else face an unknown punishment, but also be forced to watch a bizarre and torturous training video when he insults Gangle. The whole experience leaves him rather burned out, to the point where he gives up his usual cruel snark in exchange for dry cynicism.
    • "Untitled" does it in another way: he’s forced to become a vegan after chewing Gangle, this same Gangle incites other players to put him into a maid outfit, Ragatha mentions he doesn’t have friends anymore, Caine’s interruption possibly brought out this trauma, and he finds out his tail has been missing for an unknown amount of time. Unlike the previous episode though, these embarrassing moments helped him connect with Pomni, and even if he’s back to his usual jackass self, he mellowed enough to bond with the little jester.
  • Break the Nihilist: Jax insists no one in the Circus has any depth, meaning, or feelings that matter. The smallest step toward a sincere friendship with Pomni completely terrifies Jax because it means admitting he can be hurt, that he's hurt others, and that both actually matter. His attempts to drive Pomni away end up causing him great grief and a near-Panic Attack out of remorse.
  • Broken Smile: Has one after his Motive Rant when he starts cursing out of guilt.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: He is the trouble-making brooding boy to Ragatha's sweet, optimistic gentle girl. He eventually gains this sort of dynamic with Pomni, who's less optimistic but more willing to challenge Jax's worldview instead of avoiding him.
  • Brutal Honesty: He's a dickhead who always speaks his mind.
Jax: [To "Manager Gangle".] I like you better when you’re sad.
  • Bully Brutality: He's cruel for his own enjoyment and focuses on whoever's the least willing and able to fight back. He's shown to have sadistic traits by his desire to kill anything during Caine's adventures, and is disappointed when it doesn't happen. This is due to the fact that he knows he can do whatever he wants without fearing consequences, so when in “Fast Food Masquerade”, Gangle puts him into an adventure where he does face consequences if he misbehaves, his bullying demeanor falls apart, and he has to comply her demands much to his dismay.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: No Pun Intended. Jax is an aloof jackass, but that sometimes allows him to take charge and press on if either panic, passivity or apathy hold the others back.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets a taste of his own medicine throughout "Fast Food Masquerade" and especially "Untitled", the latter of which sees him forcibly turned into a vegan and forced to wear a French Maid Outfit.
  • The Cameo: He appears as an arcade claw machine plush in Knights of Guinevere alongside Pomni.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: According to Gooseworx, Jax gets hammered very easily when it comes to alcohol. While attention is never actually brought to it in the episode itself, "Untitled" hints at this, as his mannerisms and facial expressions towards the end of the bar adventure in imply he got drunk only after one drink.
  • Card-Carrying Jerkass: Jax wears selfishness and casual cruelty like a badge of honor, deliberately goes out of his way to hurt other characters physically and emotionally, and shows no intention of being anything other than the single biggest asshole in the digital world. While he interestingly enough doesn’t consider himself a bad guy (as the full audio argument with Ragatha reveals), he also states in that same conversation that if he wanted to hit Gangle, he would’ve done so and been proud of it. Heavily deconstructed in "They All Get Guns"; Jax deliberately plays into an "asshole cartoon character" archetype to distance himself from the reality of his situation to cope. He does care more than he lets on, but he's so scared of getting hurt that, the moment anyone starts to get close to him and sees him for who he really is, he just doubles down on his behavior.
  • Cerebus Call-Back: Jax's cruelty towards others, most prominently Gangle and Ragatha, is initially played for Black Comedy, merely serving as one of his many moments of Comedic Sociopathy. Come the second half of the show, however, these comedic moments start to become a lot less funny once you realize just how badly his actions affect others, especially Gangle, who has grown so weary of him that she fears he will retaliate against her for something as simple as rejecting his attempts to team up with her during the gun adventure. Suddenly Jax's bullying starts to look a whole lot less like funny moments of slapstick, and more of what they truly are; abuse. Ironically, not only does his bullying become less frequent in the second half of the show, as the darker effects of it are examined, but the other players start ganging up on him more often too.
  • Character Tic: Putting one hand on his hips as he's walking. He also has a habit of putting a finger to his cheek when he's up to his mischievous antics.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Perpetually sports a wide, toothy grin to tie into his trouble-making personality. He even provides the current image for the Trope page.
  • Closet Geek: In "Untitled," Jax makes fun of Gangle for being a fan of anime, but just a few moments later he says that "Slice of Life anime are the worst ones", indicating that he may be more into the medium than he lets on.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Although mostly a generic asshole, in "Candy Carrier Chaos" he’d be outright comically evil if not for the fact they’re in a digital world where nothing matters. He agrees with the Fudge that eating the candy people isn’t murder if it’s delicious, and later unleashes him into the kingdom. It’s all Played for Laughs, though.
  • Comically Missing the Point: He tries goading Pomni into hitting him with a gun by being callous. She eventually does out of frustration at him not taking anything seriously... but he tells her with genuine confusion that literally chucking the gun at him doesn't count.
  • Compulsive Liar: He cannot bring himself to answer a question sincerely, unless incredibly burned out. This bites him in the ass in Episode 6, where he lies in a way that even he finds harsh, resulting in Pomni attacking his character and making him freak out.
Pomni: "What would you do if I abstracted tomorrow?"
[Jax goes limp, then faces Pomni with the biggest pupils he can manage.]
Jax: "I'd move on... and probably forget about you."
Pomni: [Beat] "Okay... Okay... I understand..." [Turns around and looks at her gun.]
    [Jax winces, then mirthlessly snickers.]
Jax: "Jeeeez, you really can't take a joke, can you?"
  • The Corrupter: Subverted. In "They All Get Guns", Ragatha assumes that Jax is corrupting Pomni to be like him, and that’s why he was befriending her. Jax responds with genuine confusion at the statement, suggesting he has no intentions. The episode ends with him actively pushing Pomni away to avoid being close with her, out of fear of what happened with him losing Ribbit and Kaufmo happening to her if they kept getting closer, showing he indeed didn't have any intention of corrupting her.
  • Covert Pervert: His excited "Are we finally having this conversation!?" when Zooble complains about not being able to have sex in the Circus implies he himself was also being bothered by it and couldn't wait for the topic to come up.
  • Cracks in the Icy Façade: Starting from “Fast Food Masquerade”, later episodes of the series show Jax’s Jerkass Façade slowly being peeled apart as he starts to bond with Pomni and viewers see, despite his claims otherwise, deep down he does genuinely care about the other circus members.
  • Crying Wolf: In episode 4, he says that he actually didn't mean to break Gangle's mask that time, and judging by his surprised face, he was likely telling the truth. Though, of course, being Jax, he didn't apologize for it, either.
  • Cuckoo Finger Twirl: In the Pilot, he does this twice while talking to Pomni: First, when he was telling her that Kinger is crazy, and second, when suggesting that she might be starting to lose her mind for thinking she saw an exit. He does it again in "They All Get Guns", when he calls Pomni delusional for thinking that they were a team during the game.
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • Later episodes imply Jax used to be a friendlier individual when Ribbit (all but stated to be his former Best Friend) was around. However, when the latter abstracted, Jax ended up traumatized from the loss of his friend and decided to become a cruel bully in an attempt to push everyone else away from him so he won't feel the same pain ever again when they abstract. "Beach Episode" would reveal that he was also friends with Kaufmo, and his abstraction implicitly proceeded to make his bullying even worse.
    • "Beach Episode" suggests that, as bad as his past in the Circus was, his past in the real world was even worse, traumatic enough that he would prefer to stay in the circus forever rather than ever go back. He also hesitates when Zooble asks if he has anyone waiting for him on the outside, suggesting that he has no one in the real world, such as parents or friends, with who he is close with.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He can have a very dry wit, and he doesn't care about mincing his words:
Jax: [to the Gloink Queen] You know, you could've asked for my consent before forcing me to see something so completely and utterly disgusting.
  • Death Seeker: In “Beach Episode”, he’s so broken after pushing away Pomni and their fight that even after he almost abstracts, he’s initially still planning to go back to his room and let it happen, only relenting after Pomni asks him to go with them.
  • Decomposite Character: If Caine is the all-powerful AI aspect of AM without the Sadism, then Jax is the Sadistic aspect of AM without necessarily being an all-powerful AI. Jax tortures and bullies the other circus members for his own sadistic pleasure, with Episode 6 showcasing the very real trauma that he inflicts on both Ragatha and Gangle. His Motive Rant to Pomni in the same episode is eerily reminiscent of AM's "Hate" monologue in the story that The Amazing Digital Circus draws inspiration from. Jax particularly matches the PC adventure game version of AM, whose boisterous cruelty and tremendous ego belie his existential misery at being a bodiless artificial lifeform trapped in a computer, inability to feel positive emotions, and self-loathing that flares up whenever there's no one else to kick around.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype:
    • Of the Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist. Jax claims that his "archetype" is the funny guy who constantly messes with his companions for the laughs. But in a world without the Reset Button, someone like this would be awful to be around. Even though he doesn't take his actions seriously, it causes his fellow Players very serious routine stress and humiliation. It also takes a large toll on himself mentally, as he despises getting subjected to the Laser-Guided Karma that these characters are often given, and he refuses to actually grow or show genuine affection, which causes him to lash out at Pomni and have a mental breakdown.
    • Of the Card-Carrying Jerkass. Jax believes his cruelty is part of a joke on his allies and furiously tells Pomni that there's nothing to figure out with him; he enjoys tormenting others and only pretends to like them to worsen the betrayal. However, it's implied that he's only saying these things to prevent any form of emotional attachments. In fact, Jax is deeply traumatized by his experiences at the Digital Circus because he's outlived more than a few of his friends and gets really furious when he thinks Pomni is laying the blame of abstractions entirely on him. Card-carrying jerkasses might be fun to hear stories about, but in reality, they'd be absolutely miserable and lonely in their existence because nobody in their right mind would want to connect with them, and their "jerkassery" serves as a hint at a larger mental health issue or a hint towards their utter despair of being in the situation they've found themselves in.
    • Of the Fourth-Wall Observer who often breaks the Fourth Wall for comedic effect. Jax is the only player who acts that everything is like a cartoon and shows that he can see the audience and often addresses them. "They All Get Guns" shows that in reality, Jax almost certainly doesn't think there's an invisible audience (or at least doesn't care), but acting as if there is part of an unhealthy coping mechanism.
    • Of the Meta Guy, especially the more haughty and sarcastic type. Jax has a Seen It All attitude toward adventures, NPCs, and even other Players, and will readily express displeasure, apathy, and disappointment if he doesn't expect them to entertain him. But not only does Jax overestimate how much he can predict the story, his attitude from an in-universe perspective is at best pretentious and at worst a cover for his own abuse. Jax's assessment of all the Players as "archetype" functions as his own bespoke, dehumanizing form of Aggressive Categorism. Though he'll subject himself to the same logic, Jax's reductive attitude comes with a distinct air of superiority and his self-assigned role puts his wants above everyone else's. And ultimately looking at the Circus and everything in it as shallow, simple, and easily-understood doesn't actually give Jax any relief at being stuck there; deep down, it's just making him even more miserable.
    • Of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Jax has the usual character type of acting rude and sarcastic to everyone, only for it later to be made clear they secretly care about others and are using their Jerkass attitude as a coping mechanism. Except Jax never opens up himself to others, and continues to be cruel, and the show makes it clear that him having good intentions deep down and a tragic backstory is no excuse for his behaviour.
      • Funnily enough, he also deconstructs Jerk with a Heart of Jerk. While he immediately presents himself as the resident bully, he forms an Odd Friendship with Pomni and gives her some signs of Hidden Depths...until he abruptly and viciously declares that he isn't her friend and that there's nothing to him but being a cruel jerk. Except however sincere he is in claiming that his friendship was a Bait the Dog setup, he still exposed more of himself to Pomni than he expected and is clearly more affected than he wants to admit, his vicious rant ending in an exhausted plea that clearly gives him no satisfaction. It's made very clear that his nihilistic and spiteful attitude is his coping mechanism for being trapped in the circus, and he's pushing away anyone who gets too close so he doesn't have to deal with losing another friend. But for all the pain he causes others, it's also hurting himself. It's rather telling that after harshly ending his budding friendship with Pomni, it's him that has a nervous breakdown afterwards.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Jax starts off the series as a jackass to everyone in the Circus, and gets a kick out of bullying Pomni, the newcomer, by throwing her in situations he thought would amuse her. However, in "Fast Food Masquerade", after being dragged into menial tasks by Gangle, he talks to Pomni in a normal manner, and in "Untitled", he slowly builds an Odd Friendship with Pomni, even going so far as to apologize for his antics in the earlier episode. It’s deconstructed in "They All Get Guns!", however, as Jax ends up denying that he ever cared about Pomni, leading to a heated argument in which he unintentionally lets on that he refuses to let himself defrost due to the trauma of seeing his friends abstract in the past.
  • Dehumanization: His central coping mechanism is to mentally reduce the other players to Flat Characters, or "archetypes" as he names them, in an attempt to distance himself emotionally from them. He even does this to himself to a degree, claiming that his own archetype is being the "funny one" as a way of justifying his bullying of the other players and downplaying the very real emotional harm it does to both them and himself.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The guilt from fighting with Pomni appears to have utterly crushed him by “Beach Episode”, where he’s openly depressed and even willing to let himself abstract and even appears to be at peace with the idea of it.
  • Deuteragonist: Is the most focused on, and merchandised character next to Pomni. In the series itself, he has up to 3 episodes where he's arguably the primary character focus (5-7) and is only behind Pomni for having the most screen time of the cast. Word of God even describes the show as focusing on "someone too stubborn to give up on someone who's too stubborn to be saved", clearly referring to Pomni and Jax, and later confirmed that the two of them are indeed the "two main characters" of the show. Jax ultimately serves as the biggest challenge to the show's core theme/message of "finding meaning in a stagnant life".
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Near the end of "They All Get Guns", Pomni and Jax successfully corner Zooble in their room. Jax then decides to first annoy Zooble by singing Daisy Bell before remembering that he has the key to Zooble's room. By the time he opens the door, Zooble has prepared a flashbang and More Dakka to greet the two with, taking out their lives down to the last one each.
  • Dirty Coward: Jax directs the lion's share of his sadism towards Gangle as she's the least willing to fight back, abuses the NPCs and derails the adventures because he knows there's no real consequences. However, when Gangle convinces Caine to punish any employees who fail the Spudsy's adventure, he quickly loses his defiant, sparky attitude and does as he's told. In general, Jax is terrified of showing human emotion, sabotaging himself and others because he's afraid to be open around other people. This causes him to lash out at others, prioritize his own well being, and fall apart when faced with stressful situations.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: He seems to canonically suffer from PTSD from both Ribbit and Kaufmo's abstractions, as well as something that happened to him in the real world outside the Circus, and mirrors how it can affect a victim's decision to become the abuser themself.
  • Domestic Abuse: He constantly verbally and physically abuses Gangle, belittles her interests, and blackmails her into doing what he wants. It's severe enough that even when Gangle is by herself, she is worried about what Jax will do to her for disobeying him.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: During his angry rant at Pomni in "They All Get Guns", he brings up her attempts to empathize with him as something he is especially incensed about, accusing her of only trying be a friend to him because she feels sorry for him.
  • Dragged into Drag: In Episode 5, everyone (sans Pomni) votes to make Jax wear a maid outfit, much to his frustration and embarrassment.
  • Dramatic Irony: The fact is, there really is an invisible audience watching The Amazing Digital Circus, while Jax only believes so as a coping mechanism.
  • Driven to Suicide: More like "driven to abstraction" but he crosses the Despair Event Horizon in "Beach Episode" and nearly abstracts, a fate he seems willing to accept before he’s snapped out of it by Pomni. Gooseworx has explicitly described him as suicidal as well.
  • Driven to Villainy: By "They All Get Guns!", it's all but stated that Jax's time in the circus, namely watching other players abstract, specifically his close friends Ribbit and Kaufmo, did a number on him mentally, and he tries to cope by being "the funny one" who torments others for laughs.
  • Dying Dream: Has a dream where he sees his face joining Ribbit and Kaufmo's as he almost abstracts in "Beach Episode".

    E-H
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Sported a more muted shade of purple in the pilot before it turning more saturated "Candy Carrier Chaos" onwards.
  • Easy to Scare: If his dedicated Favorite Character Awards video is anything to go by, he gets startled to the point of nausea by simply noticing that Zooble was standing next to him.
  • Enlightened Self-Interest: The only times he ever voluntarily helps someone is for his own amusement and/or entertainment, such as helping the Fudge eat the candy people in "Candy Carrier Chaos!". This would actually be Subverted in "Beach Episode", where his efforts to help the group escape the circus would mostly be made for Pomni's sake.
  • Epic Fail: He gives an "evil" speech to Pomni in a last desperate to push her away and make her see him as just a heartless villain. It fails so badly that even he himself doesn’t believe it, swearing and lashing out seconds after.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: A subtle one that doesn’t pay off until a few episodes later. In "Untitled", while they’re at the bar, Jax is confused at being vegan despite Caine claiming to not be able to affect anyone’s minds…only for Jax to stop himself midsentence, as if he’s starting to realize something (before Zooble gets his attention again). Come "Beach Episode"’s ending, Jax finally reveals this was part of his suspicions that Caine could affect their minds after all.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Word of God is that "there are a few lines he wouldn't cross", and it shows, despite his personality:
    • Abstraction appears to be the main thing Jax draws the line at. He's horrified at the sight of Kaufmo's abstraction and wasted no time hiding Kinger and Gangle when hearing Kaufmo coming rather than abandoning them (ironically he does this after abandoning Ragatha and Pomni). He has an absolutely furious expression watching Kaufmo be put in the cellar, and briefly shows some sadness for Kaufmo's funeral. Considering the last two victims were his friends, it's not surprising that Jax takes the subject more seriously.
      • In a Japanese promotional video, when he notices an abstracted monster, he suggests that he and Pomni (who were fighting) should go somewhere else, despite being fully capable of shoving her right into the monster.
      • During the fight between the two in Episode 6, Pomni asserts that the "screw everyone" attitude he adopts contributes to why people abstract in the first place. Jax thinks she's trying to blame him alone for all of it, and takes immediate offense to it, pointing out that people who are about to abstract are unpleasant to be around and that pushing Kaufmo's abstraction on him isn't fair considering the rest of the group were also insincere and cold to Kaufmo.
    • Played for Laughs and Subverted in Episode 2, when the Fudge claims even Jax would be sickened by what he does in his free time, though he doesn't seem too terrified (given that we never learn what these atrocities were).
    • In The Amazing Digital Circus But smol, he's annoyed at seeing the others in the void, dismissing it as "Hell", but he's absolutely horrified at the sight of each of them being frozen.
    • While he'll happily cause NPCs to be slaughtered, his action to hide Kinger and Gangle from Kaufmo suggests he'll at least protect the actual humans from abstracted players.
    • Though he doesn't outright apologize, Episode 4 shows that he'll fully admit to when he didn't actually mean to cause harm to others. When he breaks Gangle's mask again during a game of baseball, his tone in response indicates that he genuinely didn't mean to hit her. That said, the full audio of Jax and Ragatha's argument also shows that if he meant it, he'd do it and be proud of it.
      • This carries into episode 6, where he shoots Pomni, who is on his own team, because they were attacking Kinger in the dark. He gives a hasty apology for the accidental hit and nothing about his behavior in the episode (not even his Rage Breaking Point) indicates that he meant to do that.
    • He gives a look of genuine discomfort when Ragatha goes a little too in-depth over her mother's cruel treatment of her in Episode 5. He doesn't even try to crack a joke about it.
    • In Episode 6, he gives an absolutely scathing rant to Pomni when she keeps prying over his apathetic and cruel nature. Not only does he start cursing as he lashes out afterwards, later at the award show, Jax is visibly trembling over what he said to her and has to recompose himself in the bathroom; To be precise, what he said was so awful that not even he could stomach it. Noticeably, he also refuses to fight back and hurt her.
      • Right before their fight breaks out, Jax coldly remarks to Pomni he'd simply move on and forget her if she ever abstracted. However, he quickly realizes how badly this hurt Pomni (to the extent that it seemed like she was about to shoot herself to test how much he really cares) and immediately tries to play it off as a joke, suggesting he doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings to that serious of a degree.
    • A small example, but Jax notably never seems to swear, to the point of refraining from it even when Gangle puts him in a maid outfit and genuinely pisses him off. Gooseworx has mentioned on her tumblr that Jax and Gangle are the only members of the player cast who don't swear. This makes him swearing in They All Get Guns once Pomni pushes him a little too far when confronting his inability to handle human emotions a lot more poignant.
    • As Caine starts glitching out after Zooble asks to have the ability to have sex, even Jax looks on in concern and worry at the sight.
    • Jax may want to stay in the circus and avoid going back to the real world, but he’s not trying to keep the others trapped with him. He gives the gang his keys so they can all escape, refuses to accompany them (though this is shown to be partly because he's on the verge of abstraction and has already given up on life) until Pomni convinces him to do so, doesn't sabotage the escape efforts nor plays a single prank on the players at any point (and even goes the extra mile of making sure Caine gets properly and prolongedly distracted so they don't get caught in the act) and while he does hit the red button to make everyone stay, it’s clearly shown that Jax was having a Panic Attack due to his own need for escapism and real world trauma that made him act impulsively, with Jax immediately feeling remorseful and horrified for his actions once the realization hits.
    • In by far his biggest example yet, Jax is absolutely furious with Caine at the end of "Beach Episode" upon learning he manipulated him and the other circus members the entire time and lied about there being a way to leave, outright calling him a “scumbag” and “liar” and spending the rest of the episode staring at him in genuine fury.
      • On a less serious note, he displays noticeable discomfort from Caine's behavior when forced to be around him for a prolong period of time, meaning even he's too weird for Jax.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Jax refers to himself as "the funny one", but the only one who finds his Jerkassery funny is himself. To Zooble, he's little more than a daily annoyance, and Episode 6 shows that he causes very real trauma to both Ragatha and Gangle. By his own admission in his Motive Rant, he claims that he causes suffering "for fun".
  • Exotic Eye Designs: His pupils are rectangular in shape.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Jax complains about Zooble voting him into being vegan in Untitled, but as he does so, he realizes something is horribly wrong since Caine said that he couldn't mess with anyone's minds. Zooble initially brushes it off, but in Beach Episode, Jax, furious that Caine teased the players with a false promise of an escape from the Circus, accuses him of being fully capable of doing so.
  • Expressive Ears: His ears droop when he's bored, annoyed, or sad. They zigzag during moments he's having a mental breakdown.
  • Expy
    • Jax is very similar to Ted from "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream". Both are the youngest members of their group and rather narcissistic. Both distrust another's kindness (Ragatha and Ellen due to paranoia of not trusting them). Both of them put up a front/facade of being a charismatic tough guy to protect themselves from being harmed, as Ted is too paranoid to trust the others and Jax is afraid of getting close to someone only to feel the pain of losing them again. Like Ted, Jax also clearly believes himself to be the Only Sane Man in the cast, but the behavior he actually exhibits quickly makes it obvious that this belief is really just a maladaptive coping mechanism for his own feelings of paranoia, loss, and lack of control. Deep down, both do have a Hidden Heart of Gold and care for the others more than they let on. Both are also the humans the all-powerful AI antagonist seems to "like" the most, with AM enjoying messing with Ted in particular and Caine seeming particularly fond of Jax.
    • Voice-wise, Jax's mannerisms and way of speaking are heavily based on Raggedy Andy, with one of his lines in "Fast-Food Masquerade" ("This is really weird...") being spoken in the exact same manner as Andy does in Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Played for Horror in "Beach Episode". While he is alone in his room, Jax finds himself in a psychedelic dream where he floats naked towards images of his, Ribbit, and Kaufmo's faces. Though confused at first, Jax closes his eyes and smiles peacefully as he comes dangerously close to having his personality erased from Abstraction were it not for Pomni snapping him out of his trance.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Somehow Jax never realized that his avatar doesn't have a tail until Pomni pointed it out in "Untitled".
  • False Friend: In "They All Get Guns", he tries to paint himself as this to Pomni to push her away, lying he only bonded with her as entertainment to himself because he found it "funny". Pomni isn't convinced.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Fear. Jax is so traumatized from the loss of his best friends Ribbit and Kaufmo that no matter how much he desperately wants friendship, specifically from Pomni, he still ends up pushing her and the others away due to fear they'll just abstract, and he'll feel the pain of losing them all over again. Noticeably, he's upset Ragatha always treats him "like a bad guy" and even seems slightly offended when Pomni accuses him of being "the villain", and downright furious when he thinks that she's placing the blame of the players' abstractions entirely on him and his "screw you" attitude, but during his Motive Rant, he desperately tries to embrace being said villain if it means pushing Pomni away from him. As Pomni accurately points out, he's actually just "scared to actually show a human emotion."
    • Jax's unfiltered self-centeredness only earns him hatred from his fellow players even if he himself doesn't seem to realize it, and he doesn't care to change this trait, no matter how many times he's criticized for it. His fixation on making everyone else miserable or ruining their fun just so he can feel in control and better about himself is shown to have a disastrous affect on the other players' psyches, as well as pushing Jax closer to abstraction as he makes himself miserable as a consequence.
  • Faux Affably Evil:
    • Jax can put on a charming tone around others, even when he's mistreating them or ignoring their needs and concerns, and instead focuses on amusing himself. Prime example being when he unleashes The Fudge into the candy kingdom while sarcastically claiming he'd "love to help [them] again sometime" and waving "bye". Though given his behavior as shown in the latter episodes, it's implied to be part of his Jerkass Façade act.
    • Hilariously subverted in one occasion in "Fast Food Masquerade". Pomni's so used to Jax being an asshole, when he's actually being nice instead, she's very suspicious during the conversation and clearly expects an insult at any point… yet it never comes.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Defied. He actively refuses to fight back against Pomni at the end of "They All Get Guns", even trying to run at one point. He claims it’s not because he secretly cares about her, but he’s clearly lying and doesn't even come up with an actual reason why he didn't retaliate.
  • Flat Character: Invoked and deconstructed. Jax claims that once in the Circus you become an "archetype" and nothing less and designated himself as the "funny guy" of the Circus, being a colossal jerk who makes everyone else miserable for his own amusement and sees all other players as his plaything to torment playing up his cruelty at all points when allowed to, yet it becomes clear during episode 6 that this is something that he's forcing on himself to ensure he avoids ever getting attached to the other performers so he won't be hurt when/if they abstract like what happened to Ribbit and Kaufmo. Unfortunately, his inability to keep up this charade without hurting himself in the process, and with the mask slipping over and over as he truly befriends Pomni and then tries to push her away once he realizes it, is implicitly sending him spiraling straight into abstraction and leaving him all alone as he loses himself.
  • Foil: Jax stands out in that he serves as this to every other member of the circus except for Pomni.
    • To Kinger. Both of them are the only male members of the Circus and are associated with the color purple. Kinger is canonically confirmed to be the oldest member of the Circus while Jax is the youngest. Both of them also get on the nerves of other players, though while Kinger does it because he's a legit Cloudcuckoolander who has trouble with his mental faculties, Jax does it intentionally to amuse himself. Neither of them like being in the Circus very much, but while Kinger goes out of his way to comfort the other Circus players in their lowest moments during his rare moments of lucidity, Jax intentionally pushes everyone away and tries to take pride in being a toxic asshole to keep anyone from getting close to him. Additionally, for all he perceives Kinger to be "the crazy one", Jax is arguably the most mentally ill of the bunch, as his toxic and harmful coping methods only worsen over time and put him on the verge of Abstraction. Meanwhile, Kinger manages to keep himself sane in the Circus by coping with his issues in a healthy way and talks to others to avoid abstracting. Also both of them lost the person they cared about the most, which hurt them deeply, but while Kinger managed to keep on connecting with others after he lost Queenie, Jax instead began to push people away after losing Ribbit, even those he desired friendship with like Pomni, in an effort to protect himself from being hurt again. Both are also the most skilled at navigating around the Circus' crazy mechanics and weaponizing the nonsense around them to their advantage, but while Kinger does it to help the others get through the adventures easier or even learn tricks they didn't before, Jax uses it to generate advantages for himself or derail adventures to amuse himself and often at the expense of other players rather than their benefit (except with Pomni).
    • To Ragatha. Ragatha is the Team Mom and nice to everyone while Jax is the Token Evil Teammate and a Jerkass. Ragatha is a rag doll who takes a lot of abuse while Jax dishes it out. Ragatha is the closest to Pomni for a while (until she warms up to Kinger), while Jax is the one Pomni takes the longest to warm up to. Ragatha tries to sugarcoat the fact Pomni is trapped for eternity, Jax instead goes Brutal Honesty and tells her such directly to her face. Ragatha is friendly to the NPCs while Jax is either rude or outright bloodthirsty towards them (except for The Fudge and Evil Pomni). However, both are shown to be more complex than they initially appear in "Fast Food Masquerade", with it being implied both of them are wearing masks as a coping mechanism; while Ragatha is a people pleaser to the point that, both in and out of universe, it's never quite clear how genuine she is, Jax is all but stated to act like a jerk to remain sane and actually does seem to have some humanity, actually checking up on Pomni towards the end of the shift.
      • Continues into "Untitled" where it's pointed out that a lot of Jax's insults don't have a lot of meaning behind them and he just sees it as having fun (for better or for worse), versus Ragatha who, when forgetting her filter or getting annoyed enough, makes very personal and cutting remarks. When sharing their pasts, Jax deflects and refuses to divulge anything about himself, meanwhile Ragatha ends up spilling her guts and accidentally trauma dumping on the rest of the cast.
      • Comes up again in "They All Get Guns", where their polar opposite coping mechanisms are laid out before them, showing the consequences it has on others and each make a decision on how to proceed. Ragatha's Stepford Smiler attitude annoys the other players, but primarily hurts her most of all and leaves her exhausted and self-loathing, while Jax's Jerkass Façade is not only hurting him, but is also hurting everyone else even more and puts them at risk of abstracting in pursuit of avoiding his own emotional pain. Both are offered to open up and rethink their approaches; Ragatha accepts Kinger's advice to take care of herself first, and is able to reconnect with Pomni in a healthier way and is more or less back to normal in the following episode. Jax furiously refuses to talk to Pomni and doubles down on his dickishness by hitting the latter where it hurts her most and burning his developing bridges with her, leading to him to having a Panic Attack where it shows he is on the verge of going insane himself, and spends all of Beach Episode unable to be his normal dickish self.
    • To Gangle. Both characters wear masks of happiness, literally for Gangle and figuratively for Jax, to hide their true emotions and sadness. With Gangle always losing the mask that makes her “happy”, and Jax always making sure that his mask never comes off. However, Gangle is a Nice Girl who’s willing to open up by her problems and is healed by the kindness shown to her by Zooble, while Jax is a jerk who refuses to open up and is terrified of being shown love by Pomni, because it reminds him that he’s getting too close to her and he has to push her away. It’s also implied that they both like anime, if Jax calling “slice of life the worst ones” is any indication, but Gangle is open about her interests unlike him.
    • To Zooble. Both characters represent the Jerk with a Heart of Gold trope, being sarcastic and rude but still genuinely caring about the other players deep down. However, Zooble believes that Gangle and the others are humans, while Jax instead believes they’re all just cartoon characters. Additionally, Zooble is openly willing their heart of gold to the others, especially Gangle, while Jax refuses to acknowledge his humanity and even tries to push away Pomni in an attempt to keep his Jerkass Façade up. Also, Zooble is Caine’s least favorite human while Jax appears to be the one he’s the most fond of, since the former actively refuses to go on adventures while the latter is the most eager to participate in them.
  • Foreshadowing
    • In the pilot episode, Jax describes Gangle and Kinger as "[...] the two most mentally stable characters to be paired together." While this seems like a pure comedic joke, this is an early instance of Jax literally demonstrating how he views the other players in the circus as cartoon archetypes and that they're all playing characters.
    • In “They All Get Guns”, Pomni warns Jax that him refusing to open up and show his emotions might be what causes people to abstract. Jax, thinking she’s blaming him for Kaufmo’s abstraction, defends himself by arguing that people who are about to abstract “aren’t pleasant to be around, at all”. Guess who ends up nearly abstracting the next episode?
  • For the Evulz: He says to Pomni that his only reason for being as much of a massive dick as he is to the others is because he finds it fun. Of course by the time They All Get Guns ends it becomes painfully clear it's all a lie he tells himself to avoid forming attachments to the other Circus members and potentially hurt from mourning them when they abstract, and that keeping up his charade is tearing him apart.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: He seems to be the only one who regularly breaks the fourth wall, much to the confusion of his peers.
    • In the Pilot, he looks at the audience in amusement when Pomni thinks she's in a dream, with Ragatha wondering why he's looking at her like that.
    • He looks at the audience as he shrugs in Episode 2 as Zooble walks off.
    • In Episode 3, he directly asks the audience what they think happens when he holds his breath. Zooble tells him to knock it off.
    • In Episode 4, he references Pomni’s unicorn from comics.
    • In Episode 5 he makes an Aside Comment after seeing Kinger and Pomni crawl from under the desk, but it's also shown that Caine is watching over everything on a TV.
    • Discussed in They All Get Guns where Jax mentions breaking the fourth wall as being part of his "archetype." It's also deconstructed in that it's made clear this is just him pretending it's all a cartoon show, so he can treat everyone involved like cartoon characters not worth caring about, including himself. To everyone else that's actually trying to hold on to their humanity, Jax acting like there's an audience they're performing for just makes him seem like a weird jackass at best and genuinely psychotic at worst.
  • Freudian Excuse: "Beach Episode" implies that Jax has nothing good for him outside of the Circus, and may have gone through something terrible. He has to lie to Zooble that there's something for him out there. From his perspective, we see brief flashbacks of a dark suburban neighborhood and a nighttime car ride down a mountain road; these coincide with a Panic Attack that has him frantically press the button to keep the Circus games going. Jax doesn't understand these memories, however, and believes that Caine has been screwing with him.
  • Freudian Excuse Denial: During his rant with Pomni, Jax claims that he has no Freudian Excuse or Hidden Depths and that all he is is just a bully who torments people for fun. But she knows he's lying both to her and mostly to himself.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Considering the awful way he treats everyone, the only reason the others tolerate him is simply because they're stuck with him (except Kinger who doesn't seem to be sane enough outside the dark to say his opinion about him). Even Pomni didn’t like him at first; he is the only one who Pomni insults and in her Imagine Spot of the other players reaching out for her, he is absent from it. This initially changes during Untitled, where Pomni and Jax actually connect, though the rest of the cast continue to regard Jax with contempt. Unfortunately, the burgeoning friendship is ruined when Jax refuses to open up and tramples all over Pomni's hopes and fears... Though despite this, Pomni is shown to still be concerned for him when she doesn't see him at the awards. It's heavily implied that he's been doing this on purpose, to avoid getting attached to anyone and never have to be hurt if they abstract like Ribbit and Kaufmo did, and Pomni grew more concerned for him than resentful.
    • However, in They All Get Guns, the gang noticeably does leave a seat open for him during the Favorite Character awards so he can sit with them. Ragatha also appears just as concerned for him as Pomni. The gang may not like him, but they do still care about him. “Beach Episode” even has Zooble advise him to open up about his problems with someone he trusts and Ragatha goes with Pomni and Abel to check on him.
  • Friendless Background: Heavily Implied in “Beach Episode” where he clearly lies to Zooble that he has someone waiting for him on the outside, suggesting he has no friends or even family in the real world.
  • The Gadfly: Subverted. He wants to believe he's this, a snarky and detached cartoon character who entertains himself by poking fun at the absurdity of his situation. In truth, he's just a sadistic bully who's frequently way more insecure than the people he torments.
  • Genre Savvy:
    • Jax is aware that he and the rest of the Circus players are basically cartoons at this point, even pointing out to Pomni how they all embody different character archetypes: Ragatha is The Pollyanna, Gangle is the Sad Clown, Kinger is the Cloudcuckoolander, Zooble is The Cynic, and he's the Plucky Comic Relief. The show wastes no time in showing how toxic and unhealthy this mindset is since he refuses to budge from his self-appointed role while the other players confront their flaws and grow as people.
    • Completely embracing the idea of himself and everyone else as a cartoon character does enable him to perform feats based on cartoon logic that few others are shown to intentionally achieve. As early as the Pilot episode he mentions having the key to everybody's room before unlocking Kaufmo's door, while Ragatha is completely confused as to how he managed this. This is later given a Call-Back in Episode 6 when he pulls out a key to Zooble's room out of nowhere. Also in Episode 6, he chides Pomni for using guns realistically and tells her to go wild with it. He makes good on this by Gun Twirling his revolver and making a successful shot despite not even glancing at his target.
    • He predicts in Beach Episode that Abel is a ruse by Caine and that the entire scheme to escape the circus is another adventure. Of course, when he's proven right, he's in utter disbelief and totally disgusted when it's revealed just how far Caine went in doing so.
  • Go Out with a Smile: As he’s abstracting in “Beach Episode”, his face goes from exhausted to a peaceful, content smile as he sees his face joining Ribbit and Kaufmo’s. Fortunately, he snapped out of it at the last second.
  • Going Native: Jax's method of staying sane in the Circus, as revealed in They All Get Guns. His advice to Pomni is to pick an archetype and play it to the hilt, and he's fully supportive of her becoming a Monster Clown when she decides to be "the evil one," although he does offer criticism of her acting. Deconstructed as the episode goes on, it's shown that Jax trying to commit to this archetype is making himself and everyone else around worse off, and that nobody else in the Circus, not even him, are just archetypes, but are instead well-rounded and complex people. His commitment to the bit is also gradually chipping away at his sanity, the very thing he has been trying to salvage.
Jax: Whether we like it or not, all we are now is a bunch of cartoon characters. So what's the point of pretending we're not?
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!:
    • Surprisingly, Jax is second to Gangle in swearing the least. Notably, even when he's genuinely furious at Gangle and Zooble for putting him in a maid outfit in episode 5, he only shouts "WHAT THE HECK!?"
    • Subverted at the end of They All Get Guns, where he gets so worked up when arguing with Pomni that he starts shouting out two f-bombs out of sheer anger and exasperation.
  • Griefer: Whenever on one of Caine's adventures his only goal is to cause as much mayhem to the other players and NPCs, and derailing the quest as much as he can.
  • Grin of Rage:
    • When Pomni questions him over his behavior and implies that it may be part of the reason people like Kaufmo are abstracting in the first place (whether she means that it is because his actions drive others to abstraction, that his behavior might drive him to abstraction or both is unclear), Jax's smug smile contorts into a strained rictus of seething rage and thinly-veiled bitterness as he retorts that the other players are far from innocent too and the past players were not pleasant to be around prior to abstracting.
    • In "Beach Episode", he switches between furious grimaces and strained grins when he accuses Caine of loving to lie to the players after the latter's deception is revealed.
  • Guilt Repression: He’s genuinely remorseful for pushing Pomni away so cruelly at the end for “They All Get Guns”, to the point of having a Panic Attack. Rather than apologize, however, he chooses to isolate himself from the rest of the players, falling into a depressed state that leads to him almost abstracting.
  • Hair-Raising Hare: He is a toony purple rabbit and a Card-Carrying Jerkass that enjoys tormenting others with a craving for violence.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: He wears overalls and gloves, but no shirt or shoes.
  • Hammerspace: Somehow stores the key to both Kaufmo and Zooble's room behind his back. He also ends up shoving a bowling ball in the same place and magically pulls it out to push Kinger and Gangle into the Gloink pit.
  • The Hedonist: Jax's lifestyle is all about self-satisfaction. This isn't a terrible idea given the risks of going insane from boredom, but most of his enjoyment comes from others' suffering, often at his hands. He's also the one who seems to enjoy eating food the most, despite not needing to.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Jax recognizes that the players are immortal and basically invincible, as are the NPCs, and exploits it for wanton carnage. This is usually Played for Laughs, though the second half of the series plays it in a more serious light and as a symptom of his disturbed mind.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • In the second episode, he momentarily seems sad before looking annoyed and walking away prior to Kaufmo's funeral. It's the first hint there could be a little more to him than just being a snarky Jerkass all the time. Take note, one of the few times he appears to show genuine anger is watching Kaufmo get put in the cellar. Beach Episode reveals that Kaufmo was part of a friend group with him and Ribbit, of which Jax is the Sole Survivor.
    • There are many hints that he hates being stuck in the circus just as much as everyone else, but has long accepted that there's no way out. In his own way. In The Amazing Digital Circus But smol, Jax, upon seeing the blinding whiteness of the Void, momentarily wonders if he's in Heaven. When he's the last one of the circus to be frozen by the bug, he begins mumbling something in a remorseful tone. "Fast Food Masquerade" heavily implies that him being a dick to people is his personal coping mechanism; when denied it, he completely loses his upbeat demeanor and most of his motivation to do anything but wait for things to change. In "They All Get Guns", Jax outright admits to Pomni that everyone, including him, hates being trapped in the circus.
    • The full audio argument with Ragatha reveals that, Card-Carrying Jerkass or not, Jax is actually upset Ragatha always treats him like a "bad guy" and argues he's not really so bad, showing he doesn't consider his actions to be that awful. Ironically, his actions are shown to be that awful, causing Gangle to show clear signs of anxiety and stress from his abuse.
      • In an extremely brief moment during They All Get Guns, Jax actually loses his smile a little bit when Pomni asks him if his archetype is "the villain", showing once again, he doesn't want the others to view him as an evil guy. But he pretends to be nothing more than that in an attempt to push Pomni away from him due to fear of her getting too close to him just to abstract like Ribbit and Kaufmo did.
    • In Untitled, Ragatha lets slip that Jax used to have a friend, and whatever became of them, he's livid when she brings that up, and she's left awkwardly trying to apologize before leaving. He also confides to Pomni that he dislikes her positivity for the same reasons as Gangle did in the previous episode.
      • In the "No one's around to help" short, Jax even sadly questions why he doesn't have any friends.
    • This same episode reveals that Jax seems to be a fan of Breaking Bad. Also, during Gangle's anime adventure, he argues that slice-of-life animes are the worst ones, which could imply that he is a fan of anime (or at least familiar with them), just not the ones he considers boring.
    • "Untitled" shows that Jax does at least acknowledge the others in his own way, as he legitimately wonders if Gangle can ever be genuinely happy with Pomni without his characteristic jerkassness, is somewhat hurt when Pomni assumes he never cares how the others feel, and looks legitimately concerned when Ragatha dumps her trauma about her abusive mother and doesn't drop a quip at the expense of her past despite their present hostility with each other.
    • He vehemently denies this in "They All Get Guns!", however, claiming to be the petty, self-centered jerk he makes himself out to be after he and Pomni are the last players left standing, even though that's obviously not the case. This may imply that his unpleasantness is actually a coping mechanism for losing people he cares about, pushing them away so he doesn't feel anything when they abstract.
      • He also openly admits to Pomni that everyone there hates the circus, including him too and he even used to have a mindset similar to Pomni as well. Furthermore, while breaking down in the bathroom, Jax openly admits that he looks "stupid", showing his confidence about his appearance in the previous episode was all for show and he’s deeply insecure as well (implied earlier when he calls Pomni a "weird cartoon jester" but it’s clear he was about to say "rabbit").
    • He's the first one to piece together that Abel's escape plot in Beach Episode is just another adventure by Caine, though his reasons for ending it were more impulsive than logical. He also picks up on Caine's brainwashing (following up his brief realization in Untitled), and gets Caine to publicly admit to his mind-editing powers.
    • When we finally see Jax's room in "Beach Episode" it's shown that it is very sterotypically "girly", being colored with pastel pinks and blues and covered in details such as rainbows. It's implied that he's deeply insecure about it as well, as he tries to keep Ragatha and Pomni from peeking inside. Why his room looks like that is unclear.
      • Also in his room, glow in the dark stars can be seen on the ceiling. Considering that back in "Untitled", him and Pomni were the only ones who were actually looking at the stars during the Stargazing adventure while the rest of the group were having a picnic, it's very likely that stargazing was his suggestion all along.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Deconstructed. Despite his constant bullying of the other players, it becomes pretty clear that Jax secretly cares a lot more about them than he cares to admit. Unfortunately, he's scared of developing attachments since it could leave him vulnerable to emotional pain if the other person were to abstract or violate his trust, so he dehumanizes everyone by assigning two-dimensional "archetypes" to himself and the other players to make his carefree facade easier to pull. In moments where he starts to actually get close to anyone, he doubles down on the "asshole cartoon character" persona as a defense mechanism. This has the dual effect of deeply hurting the players trying to help him causing them to genuinely distance themselves and leave him alone and causing Jax's own issues to fester and worsen because he refuses to let anyone else help him, leading to him having a Panic Attack. It's a coping mechanism that's equal parts self-destructive and toxic and eventually lead to his own Death of Personality once it becomes too much. Taken up to Eleven near the end of "They All Get Guns" when Pomni tries to reach out to him, only for Jax to double down on his jerkass behavior and do everything in his power to make her hate him, which she sees through and only serves to make him loathe himself. Word of Saint Paul outright says, "He wishes he was a villain but he's misunderstood and even he doesn’t know it."
  • His Own Worst Enemy:
    • Jax is deeply afraid of growing attached to the other players and being hurt if/when they abstract, so he acts like a mean, bullying asshole in order to push them away and prevent himself from getting hurt. As his breakdown in Episode 6 shows, this attitude has only served to make himself more insecure, afraid and close to going insane himself. During said breakdown he looks at himself in the mirror and growls "God, you look stupid..." showing that he can be just as vicious and demeaning to himself as he is to others.
    • Jax doesn't actually want to leave the Circus, as the real world either bores or terrifies him. This is hinted at in Episode 4, where he's utterly drained by Gangle's fast food "adventure", and seemingly confirmed in Episode 7 when he has horrifying flashbacks of the real world; though whether or not the latter are real is unclear.
  • Humanizing Moment: Mostly Downplayed.
    • While Jax does have a few moments that hint he’s deeper than just an obnoxious Jerkass in the first few episodes, they’re all extremely easy to miss (especially his brief moment of sadness for Kaufmo’s funeral). However, the same cannot be said for his moment towards the end of "Fast Food Masquerade", where he genuinely goes out of his way to check up on Pomni during their adventure at Spudsy’s and doesn't direct even one insult or jab her way. It’s the moment both Pomni and the audience truly start to realize there might be more to him than being an obnoxious troll all the time.
    • It's implied in Episode 7 that Jax has been through something horrible in the real world, which causes him to freak out at the possibility of being spit out of the game and back into it. When Caine reveals that the whole quest to leave is just an adventure, it has Jax wonder if these memories of horrific events were added to him as an incentive to keep him around, which makes him the first to snap at Caine about his current and prior manipulations.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Downplayed. Although Caine has trapped the players in the game, he's completely oblivious to the harm he inflicts on them and tries to be a gracious host by addressing complaints reasonably and initially allowing players to sit out adventures if they please. Jax, on the other hand, goes out of his way to bully and torment his allies and has no issue killing NPCs for no other reason than for his amusement as he desperately doesn't want to see himself or anyone else in the digital realm as a real person in order to cope with his existence. With all that said, at the end of the day he's still little more than one more prisoner of the Circus with no more power over the lives of his fellow players and the Circus itself any more than they do, and he himself doesn't fully believe nor commits to his Jerkass Façade, always backing out of anything that gets too real and showing real emotion around the subject of abstraction and the other circus members' real-life issues. It's fully subverted by “Beach Episode”, where Jax acts far less cruel than ever, even if partly as a result of nearly hitting the Despair Event Horizon and abstracting, showcases more genuine feelings of kindness around others, actually shows remorse when he thinks he's trapped everyone else in the Circus forever out of impulse and finally, Caine noticeably starts to become a far darker character with the reveal of how manipulative and self-centered he is despite his inherent lack of malice, while Jax is shown to be disgusted by his actions by the end of it.
  • Hypocrite:
    • His excuse for refusing to help Zooble when they get taken by the Gloinks? They called everyone idiots, and don't want to help because they find it rude. As if he wasn't always belittling everyone else himself.
    • Jax complains to Pomni that Ragatha is using the people around her to feel better about herself. As much as many of the other players agree with him, it's pretty rich coming from the guy who knowingly and regularly uses, abuses, pranks, and humiliates them for his own amusement without a shred of remorse. It's also shown later that Ragatha isn't using the others intentionally, which Kinger points out to the latter during her breakdown in "They All Get Guns", unlike Jax, who deliberately uses people.
      • In the same episode, he accuses Ragatha's forced optimism as being a manipulation tactic. The next episode, it's shown that he dismisses people's feelings and attempts to gaslight them when they don't find his cruel antics "funny" or challenge his Jerkass Façade. First by bluntly claiming Pomni was misremembering him reaching out to her first (when he did in fact do this), then coldly dismissing how badly he hurt her by quipping she took his cruel "joke" about her greatest fear of being forgotten and left behind if she suddenly abstracted, too seriously.
    • Jax also claims to hate how disingenuous Ragatha's kindness and optimism feel, but it's heavily implied that Jax's cruel persona is just as disingenuous, if not more so. "They All Get Guns" all but confirms that he pushes people away as a coping mechanism, and that he's lying to himself about how little he cares. Pomni eventually calls him out on this.
    • Jax constantly subjects Gangle to humiliations and pranks because he enjoys her upset reactions to everything he does and even goes as far as to insist she enjoys it as well. However, when Gangle calls a vote to force him into a maid outfit in "Untitled" (something that isn't anywhere near as bad compared to what he's done to her), Jax immediately loses his shit and chases Gangle in a furious attempt to pound the crap out of her, showing that Jax can't take a joke if he's the butt of it.
      • Additionally in Episode 5, he tells Ragatha that she should just allow herself to be mean every now and then instead of desperately trying to please people. In Episode 6, she inadvertently makes an insensitive remark by claiming he was trying to corrupt Pomni into being just like him and accidentally redirects a shot from one of his guns back at him, and Jax retaliates by furiously gunning her down.
    • In Episode 6, he tells Pomni to stop taking things so personally and revel in the idea that they're more akin to cartoon characters than actual people while in the circus. This doesn't stop him from being a Thin-Skinned Bully who absolutely cannot take what he dishes out, and will fly off the handle the minute he's forced to endure anything that affects him personally, meanwhile he treats Gangle so poorly she has clear signs of trauma due to his physical and emotional abuse of her.
    • Also in Episode 6, Jax mentions how people become unpleasant to deal with before they start abstracting, blissfully unaware this describes him and his attitude perfectly.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: It is rich for Jax to call out Caine for lying all the time and manipulating the players in Episode 7, but considering the possible scale and measures taken overshadow Jax's bullying by a lot, he's completely in his right to do so. The others seem to agree, focusing their suspicion and anger onto Caine despite Jax having just overrode the group to press the red button and possibly trapping them in the Circus forever (at least until Caine revealed it was all an adventure).

    I-L
  • Ignorant of Their Own Ignorance: Jax claims to be self-aware enough to joke about supposedly breaking the fourth wall, but as the series goes on, we're shown he's actually in complete denial about the situation in multiple ways. It's eventually shown his insistent derealization is partially a coping mechanism for his current existence and was either caused or worsened with the loss of his close friends, like Ribbit.
    • He likes to think and act as though he's the center of attention starring in a chaotic cartoon show made for an unseen audience to enjoy, and so he always tries to mess with both the human cast and artificial characters in every adventure to keep himself and the imaginary viewers entertained. At best, his expectations leave him increasingly disappointed, as seen in "Candy Carrier Chaos" when there isn't as much action as he was hoping for and a peaceful resolution is made possible (until the Fudge wakes up at the last second). At worst, he's unprepared for whenever the other players are willing to retaliate, such as Ragatha and Gangle having him Bound and Gagged to stop him from ruining their time in "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor", or Gangle and Zooble using the voting system to mess with Jax during "Untitled". Much to his frustration, Jax wholeheartedly embracing his cartoony nature still doesn't exempt him from to being on the other end of a joke, as he doesn't anticipate Ragatha countering his slapstick with a logic-bending gag of her own in "They All Get Guns".
    • Jax confidently assigns shallow "archetypes" to everyone in the Circus to view them as cogs in an overall machine meant to move a story along, and this includes himself, with the assertion that he's at least self-aware enough to choose who he wants to be. When he's unable to describe Pomni with an "archetype", failing to recognize the actual main protagonist of the show at that, he practically blames Pomni for it by calling her someone who "hasn't figured it out yet" rather than admit to how flawed this outlook is, while other scenes from the same episode prove just how utterly wrong his assessments of the others are. Relying on this mindset has also made him rather paranoid and distrustful of other players, from doubting if Gangle has the capacity to be happy, to suspecting Ragatha's constant friendliness is a disarming front to let her take advantage of people.
  • Immortality Immorality: He pulls pranks on NPCs and other players alike that would normally be fatal, which to him are justified since the former are just AI made to be played with while the latter can only be harmed psychologically. As long as it's inconsequential to him, he won't restrain himself in ways of having fun.
  • Inexplicably Tailless: While being a rabbit, he lacks a cotton tail (likely to give him more human attributes). He did believe he had one until Pomni pointed it out though. Justified as he is not really a rabbit but rather a digital rabbit-shaped avatar. In Episode 6, he can be seen with a tail for the first time, but also without one, with it sometimes disappearing between cuts. It's displayed very prominently during his breakdown during the Character Awards, implying it may be connected to his state of mind at the time.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While he's definitely not entirely innocent and has no qualms about pushing people away (in fact, that's the whole point of his behavior), he doesn't seem to realize the full repercussions of his "light-hearted pranks" on everyone. This is because Jax has internalized the view that nothing in the Circus really matters and that there are no long-lasting consequences to anything, and seems to project the same view on everyone else while failing to realize that while the physical damage he does isn't lasting, the emotional wounds caused by his actions are very much real and painful, especially to Gangle. At least initially. When Pomni backs him into a corner in episode 6 to the point where he can no longer claim innocence, instead of changing his ways as she had hoped he would, Jax is unable to overcome his fears and doubles down on his unhealthy coping mechanisms by claiming he doesn't care about anyone in the circus and views them as playthings to hurt for his own amusement. While his words are indicated to be hollow, the emotional distress he's under is not.
  • Insane Troll Logic: He believes that it's completely acceptable to bully and harass Gangle because her comedy mask gets broken all the time, and therefore cannot actually be happy. He also seems to believe that she likes being bullied due to her insecure and submissive behavior around him, something Pomni and Ragatha both raise eyebrows about, and Gangle herself makes it clear that she most certainly does not enjoy the constant abuse and is in fact actively traumatized by it. Episode 6 expands on this a bit more, explaining that since he views everyone as a cartoon rather than a person, any morality is pointless.
  • Instant Regret: As soon as his mind clears up at the end of “Beach Episode” and he realizes he just hit the red button to keep all the players trapped in the circus, he’s horrified by his actions.
  • Internalized Categorism: Jax insists the Players are no longer "real" nor "people", but living caricatures with extremely narrow social capabilities, even if means denying himself any ability to grow or connect to others. Despite only pretending he's at peace with this, as much as he really believes it in the first place, Jax will readily use this reductive perspective to justify himself as the abuser and the others as his victims.
  • Interrupted Suicide: He begins to abstract in “Beach Episode” and accept his end but is fortunately saved at the last second by Pomni and Ragatha.
  • In Vino Veritas: According to Gooseworx, Jax apologized to Pomni for the "President Pomni" adventure because he was drunk on vegan whisky sour. It doesn't only bring the best of him though, as he also teases Ragatha for what she said when she was drunk on Stupid Sauce.
  • I Reject Your Reality: In episode 6, Jax insists that everyone loves his antics because he's "the funny one", even though it's blatantly obvious that he's the only person in the circus who finds his torment funny, with Gangle being outright traumatized by it. When Pomni calls him out on it and claims he's not the funny one, Jax angrily snaps at her and accuses her of "looking down" on him.
  • Irony:
    • Despite having the avatar of a rabbit, which is normally depicted as a harmless animal that embodies innocence and vulnerability, Jax is the most bloodthirsty of the players, and despises displays of weakness and vulnerability (especially from Gangle and Evil Jax). That said, considering his whole shtick of being a careless jerk is a farce he forces upon himself and others as being "archetypes" it's implied that deep down he does fit the kind of animal he looks like pretty well as a scared and vulnerable person, only he compensates in the worst way possible to avoid hurting from other people abstracting.
    • His avatar is an anthropomorphic cartoon rabbit, a.k.a. a critter that loves digging holes in the ground, and he suffers from trypophobia (the fear of repeated patterns of small holes or bumps).
    • Despite being the Token Evil Teammate, Jax being seen as “evil” is actually one of his Berserk Button. Likewise it’s eventually confirmed that deep down, he does seek genuine companionship, seen by his bonding with Pomni. Yet he’s so scared of losing a friend again like Ribbit, he decides to “embrace” being a monstrous villain and push Pomni away to protect himself.
    • Jax adapts his Jerkass Façade as a coping mechanism to Never Be Hurt Again after Ribbit and Kaufmo's abstractions. Yet it is ultimately hurting him far more than it is helping him, as seen when he feels so guilty for pushing Pomni away, he has a Panic Attack, indicating he might be very close to abstraction himself and in “Beach Episode”, he nearly does abstract.
    • Despite his tendency to bully the female players the most, the two players he’s shown to have the closest bond with are Pomni and Ribbit, both of whom are women.
    • He has the most mundane name of the players despite trying so, so hard to pretend he's a cartoon character with no depth or humanity.
    • Jax, of all people, is actually the most helpful player in “Beach Episode” during the attempts to escape the circus. Along with donating the cast his keys, he helps them enter the Chinese Room, steals the keycard to Caine’s office from the latter and personally gets the players into said office.
      • Even in the Pilot episode, despite Gangle accusing him of having not done anything, Jax actually did contribute quite a bit to the Gloink Queen adventure, as he both protected Kinger and Gangle from Kaufmo and helped them both reach the Gloink Queen when they were too nervous to jump down the hole.
    • Jax mentions how people who are about to abstract aren’t pleasant to be around. Yet Jax is actually less of a bully to the other players when he’s close to the point of abstraction, preferring to sulk off on his own and leave them alone rather than harass them even worse.
  • It Amused Me: His reason for doing everything he does is that it's for his own amusement, as he himself admits.
  • It's All About Me: To say the least, Jax seems to only care about his own pleasure in the grand scheme of things, even if it comes at others' expense. Deconstructed as the series goes on and comes to a head in "They All Get Guns" by showing how toxic this is within the Digital Circus. It's revealed that Jax relies on being the self-centered "funny one" to push people away so he won't feel the pain of watching them all inevitably abstracting; it's also heavily implied he blames himself for the abstraction of his friends, hence he relies on being The Hedonist to Never Be Hurt Again. However, Pomni very angrily points out that being this apathetic, cruel, and self-centered to cope with his pain does not make him the "funny one" because Jax is inflicting very real physical and psychological damage on the other players to amuse himself. All this is doing is putting everybody at risk of crossing the Despair Event Horizon, as evidenced by Ragatha's self-loathing and especially Gangle's legitimate trauma/fear of Jax. When Pomni specifies this detail, Jax very angrily deflects this and accuses her of looking down on him like the others. This wording shows that, deep down, he knows what she said is true, but he is so wrapped up in his own desperation to avoid pain and suffering that he refuses to acknowledge the depths of this problem or bring himself to care enough to stop.
  • Jaw Drop: Played for Laughs. Upon hearing Zooble stating that they want the ability to have sex in "They All Get Guns", Jax gives a humorous, shocking expression with his mouth actually opening up.
  • Jerkass Façade: At first glance, Jax is a cynical, narcissistic, and sadistic prankster who views the digital world as a consequence-free space for his personal entertainment and frequently torments other circus members for his own amusement. He trips over Ragatha in his teaser, constantly abuses Gangle like stepping on her comedy mask, shoving her, as shown in her teaser, and blackmailing her in Episode 2, pushes characters out of moving vehicles, and went far as putting centipedes in Ragatha's room in the pilot. Pomni and Zooble even call him an “asshole” on separate occasions. However, as the series progresses, it becomes clear that said behavior is actually a coping mechanism for being trapped in the digital world and losing his friends Ribbit and Kaufmo, seeking to push everyone away from him so he’ll Never Be Hurt Again. And on top of that, it is ironically the very thing that is hurting him the most and driving him closer to Abstraction by isolating him from the other players, the very people that could help him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Jax is an unapologetic asshole who happily stomps on other people's feelings, but he's rarely wrong when he tears into them instead of bullying them.
    • At the beginning of the pilot, where Pomni enters the circus and of course asks for an exit, he interrupts Ragatha's struggle to find a soft way of telling her there is no exit to bluntly state that. Zooble responds by chiding Jax for his deliberate insensitivity, but can't deny to Pomni what he just said.
    • When Zooble tells him he shouldn't push Caine in "Fast-Food Masquerade", he just points out that they don't have much room to stand on seeing as they actively refuse to go on adventures, something that drives Caine crazy.
      • In the same adventure he also argues to Zooble that Caine isn't going to genuinely punish any of them because it's not in his nature to do anything malicious. At the end of the shift, their "punishment" is literally just getting a B+ despite their utter ineptitude at the adventure itself.
    • In Episode 5, Jax says that he thinks Ragatha tries too hard to be nice and positive all the time, due to how the Circus Gang are all trapped in a digital world with no way to escape from. As a result of her doing this every day, Jax thinks that it starts to lose meaning over time. Notably, Gangle expressed the same thoughts an episode prior, and Pomni ends up echoing this sentiment later to encourage Ragatha not be a Stepford Smiler all the time. That Ragatha is a case of The Friend No One Likes, even if nowhere near as much as Jax himself, solely due to her kindness and positivity coming off as disingenuous is and indication of how on the mark he is.
    • When Zooble and Ragatha continue confronting his Jerkass Façade in the bar, especially his targeting towards Gangle, he offhandedly regards their hostility as taking things "far too seriously" which, while characteristically insensitive, also has a legitimate point as a lot of the emotional issues of the players stem from their inability to loosen up and accept things as they are, which leads to many of them abstracting because they continue to treat their current condition as if it is an immutable Fate Worse than Death. Even if Jax's particular flavor of embracing his condition isn't exactly ideal for everyone, he does make a valid point about loosening up and enjoying what they have, something even Kinger made as a similar point back in Episode 3 to Pomni to overcome her Nervous Wreck status and presumably further shows why Pomni is gravitating towards having a friendship with Jax over Ragatha as a result. This point would actually be Played With in "They All Get Guns". Pomni takes his advice to an extent and decides to play a villainous role for that adventure. Since she isn't taking things too seriously while also acknowledging that this Heel Turn is temporary, she has fun and ends the adventure with no problems. Similarly, everyone except Ragatha would commit to gunning each other down, with even the likes of Kinger and Gangle having no problem trying to win, and most of the players enjoy themselves. For Jax himself, this would ironically be subverted and deconstructed severely as his specific lackadaisical point of view he preaches is not heathly due to how far he takes it and Jax is in fact the one most likely to Abstract out of the group at his current rate because he refuses to cast off his mask of being a Jerkass to protect himself from any lasting connection as he spirals further into his nihilistic cynicism.
    • During his emotional outburst in Episode 6, Pomni claims his awful attitude is part of why people abstract (whether she means him and anyone else who might've acted like him before, the other players or both things isn't clear, however). Jax immediately fires back that it's not fair to single him out for something the whole group had a hand in, alluding to how everyone else couldn't convincingly fake being nice to Kaufmo, a fact admitted to by both Gangle and Ragatha. He also adds that Pomni didn't even know Kaufmo at all, a valid point since he abstracted when she arrived.
    • This is defied in "They All Get Guns" as Jax claims his actions are justified because everyone is a cartoon "archetype" rather than a person, and therefore he can just act however he wants without worrying too much about how others feel. However, the rest of the episode shows that not only are the archetypes the other players Jax claims them to be is factually wrong, (ie. the "grumpy" Zooble being extremely kind to Gangle, the "cheerful" Ragatha being miserable and self-loathing), Pomni takes issue and claims that even his own self description is wrong.
    • After The Reveal in "Beach Episode" that the plan to escape the circus is another one of Caine's adventures, Jax verbally shreds him for playing with the cast in such a cruel, underhanded way, and for lying about his ability to alter the player's minds. Nobody objects to this.
    • Jax is also the first of the players to realise that if Caine is capable of lying about the nature of his ‘Escape the Circus Adventure’, it also means he can lie about other things; namely his capacity to affect their minds, which Pomni and Kinger both realize has other, darker implications.
    • Earlier in the same episode, despite him being too grumpy and depressed to play his jerkass persona due to the events of the previous one, and with his poor track record of getting along with the other players, he rightfully calls Zooble out for trusting a supposedly human disguised as a mannequin NPC they know nothing about (even by calling him Mr. Obvious Twist Villain), over him who at least did help them actively in their quest to escape from the Circus (mostly for Pomni’s sake rather than his own or the other humans’s).
  • Jerkass Realization: Heavily Implied in “Beach Episode” thanks to the events of the previous episode. Pomni calling him out as not being “the funny one” before attacking him and him pushing her away leaves Jax wrecked with remorse for his treatment of her, causing him to have a Panic Attack in the bathroom. By the 7th episode, Jax appears to have all but abandoned his bullying ways towards the other players and even when Zooble dumps a bucket of water on him, he accepts it without any attempt of retaliation, heavily implying Jax has fully realized the weight of his actions and feels as though he deserves whatever he has coming to him, even being willing to let himself abstract now. Noticeably, while Jax doesn’t verbally show regret for his treatment of Gangle and Zooble when the latter calls him out, the way he looks away after being asked, “Aren’t you supposed to be causing trouble for everyone?” suggests he does realize how terrible he’s been to some extent.
  • Jerkass to One:
    • While he's an asshole to pretty much everyone in the Circus, Jax is the most actively cruel and malicious towards Gangle and can fling more towards her in one sitting, seeing her as an easy target since her "submissive and agreeable" nature prevents her from ever standing up to him.
    • Despite his attempts to avoid it, this is eventually Inverted with Pomni. He still jabs at her, but she's the only one that he actually has genuine conversations with and treats even a little decently. Even when he tries to be as cruel as possible to her, it just leaves her deeply concerned for him and him deeply disgusted with himself.
  • Jerk Justifications: Deconstructed. Jax justifies his poor behavior in "They All Get Guns" by showing that he views every single player in the circus as a two-dimensional archetype, stating that he and the others can't be more than such because none of them are human anymore. Furthermore, he explains this as a way to reason why he acts so abrasive to his fellow players, and why he isn't worried if they get hurt emotionally or physically. Not only does the episode go on to show that these archetypes do not embody the others' character, Pomni goes on to question if Jax's behavior is a reason why players abstract (whether she means everyone in general including him or just the others is not clear, but she still clearly links his behavior to abstraction as a direct cause).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Deconstructed since while he still secretly cares for and mourns Ribbit and Kaufmo and warms up with Pomni with time, as well as occasionally showing some Pet the Dog moments towards the other players (hiding Kinger and Gangle from abstracted Kaufmo or assisting the others in their attempt to escape the circus in “Beach Episode”) his fear of losing others leads him to push people away with his cruelty rather than show his true feelings.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Invoked. Jax is characterized by his sheer disregard for others and willingness to target people who can't fight back against him for the pettiest of reasons. He is also quite uncaring towards the fact that other people besides himself are trapped in the Digital Circus and constantly pursues his life as an avatar joking at other people's expense. However, by "Untitled", he comes to develop an Odd Friendship with Pomni and seems to enjoy having fun with her on their next adventure in "They All Get Guns". This only pushes him to immediately try to drive Pomni away by claiming that he is a heartless bully who has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, deliberately seeking to hurt her by lashing out at her insecurities of being forgotten before admitting that he only "befriended" her as manipulation and doesn’t care for her or any of the others in the circus. Pomni doesn't truly buy it, but it deeply hurts her and damages their budding friendship all the same.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: The first two episodes had him generally getting away with his Jerkass behavior aside from a few minor moments of slapstick. Later episodes have other players actively ensuring he Can't Get Away with Nuthin'.
    • In "The Mystery Of Mildenhall Manor", after he traps a friendly ghost NPC and tosses Gangle's Comedy Mask down the doorway that leads to the violent "mature" route of the adventure, he's later seen being dragged around in a red wagon, having been Bound and Gagged by Ragatha for much of their "pacifist" adventure offscreen.
    • For "Fast Food Masquerade", Gangle gets an unbreakable Comedy Mask from Zooble, which allows her to enforce her role as the restaurant's manager and put Jax through several disciplinary measures to get him to take his Burger Fool "job" seriously. He's absolutely exhausted by the end of the shift.
    • After he gets to live out his hunting suggestion in "Untitled", Zooble calls for a group vote to skip his adventure and move onto the next one, while also taking his more violent urges away by making him vegan. Caine follows through with it, and him being vegan sticks until near the end of the episode. His own suggestion to turn Zooble into a slug is vetoed by the other players voting against it, and for one last bit of humiliation, Gangle convinces everyone (save Pomni) to dress him in an embarassing maid outfit.
    • Despite his team winning and getting the satisfaction of killing the other players in a game of team deathmatch for "They All Get Guns", Pomni takes the moment they have to actively combat his attempts to push her and others away, with Jax constantly struggling to keep his mask up and consistent. His failure to actually convince Pomni he lacks any depth or emotions gets him so upset he faces a severe Panic Attack in a restroom near the end, seemingly from all the negative emotions he's suppressing.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Whenever other players have control of an adventure, he tends to be subjected to all kinds of humiliation, especially in the episodes after "Candy Carrier Chaos!". Normally, Ragatha and Gangle, his two biggest victims, tend to do this to him.
    • In "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor", he gets tied up and gagged while Ragatha and Gangle have tea with one of the ghosts in the Mildenhall Manor adventure's regular mode, depriving him from any means of capturing the ghosts as he wishes.
    • In "Fast Food Masquerade", he's given all the hardest jobs at Spudsy's thanks to Gangle biting back on him as the shift manager, and he's forced to watch a painful training video when he insults Gangle for her newfound confidence.
    • In "Untitled", he's temporarily turned into a vegan for the rest of the Lightning Round after the first adventure (preventing him from indulging in his desire to viciously bite other characters), and later forced into a maid outfit in the softball adventure thanks to the other players voting for it. Zooble also exploits his fear of corn twice as soon as they learn of it.
  • Kick the Dog: If any of the Players are having a good time, have achieved something, or are opening up to the whole group, Jax makes it his mission to both ruin the moment and make a joke at the other party's expense, usually by downplaying and mocking the achievement, or completely humiliating them so he can laugh about it. He does all this to keep up his schtick of being the "funny one" and cope with being in the circus. This is deconstructed because Jax is interfering with and stymieing much needed positivity, catharsis and Character Development that helps the Players band together and survive in the Circus. His needlessly cruel ways of doing it also causes more emotionally vulnerable people like Ragatha and Gangle to backslide into self-hatred and anxiety, and increases the chance that any of the Players could abstract from reaching their breaking point with his bullying.
    • His Establishing Character Moment is made when he walks over Gangle's comedy mask, clearly unbothered by her anguish about him making it worse. He later offers her to go ahead of him on an escalator, only to immediately push her down afterwards.
    • Perhaps his first major instance of this was in the "Pilot", where he leaves Ragatha and Pomni to deal with the abstracted Kaufmo without any intention to go fetch Caine, meaning he literally just left them to struggle and be attacked without looking for a solution.
    • Gangle seems to be his favorite bullying target, as in "Candy Carrier Chaos" he blackmails and threatens Gangle into driving recklessly, even though it'd endanger Pomni. When they later all go careening off a cliff, Jax chooses to blame Gangle just because he can.
    • When Ragatha tries to discourage Gangle from ramming the truck with Pomni still on it, Jax throws Ragatha onto a pile of knives and threatens to blackmail Gangle if she doesn't listen to him.
    • Near the end of "Candy Carrier Chaos", He leaves the doors to the Candy Kingdom unlocked, allowing the voracious and crazed Fudge to consume and wreck havoc upon its citizens, and is clearly pleased with the result.
    • In "Fast Food Masquerade", he puts Ragatha in a fryer filled with hot grease for no reason other than he could, and later he harshly tells Gangle to her face that he likes her better in her depressed state, without any sarcasm.
    • In "They All Get Guns!", after specifically being informed that Caine is putting everyone through trust exercises, he just decides to shoot Ragatha immediately, both harming her and completely spitting in the face of Caine's attempt (however convoluted and very likely unhelpful it is) at good will.
    • He flatly says to Pomni's face near the end of "They All Get Guns!" that if she abstracted the next day, he'd move on and forget all about her. He seems to realize he went too far, and attempts a "Just Joking" Justification, but the fact he refuses to acknowledge his mistake doesn't make it any better and pushes Pomni past her Rage Breaking Point.
    • In "Beach Episode", Zooble lists out the countless times Jax abused them and Gangle as their reason for splashing him with water, such as him running the former over with a steamroller, pushing the latter into a piranha pit, setting Zooble on fire, mailing them a pipe bomb, and tossing them into an active volcano.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Episode 6 has him declare that any friendship he and Pomni (who he was bonding with) had was never real and was just so she'd be more hurt by him saying so, even claiming that he'd forget her if she abstracted. It's clear by his attitude just before and afterwards that this was to push her away, and while Pomni is hurt by it, it's all but stated that she doesn't believe him.
  • Lack of Empathy: In case it wasn't apparent from his Jerkass personality, Jax is very apathetic for the other players' safety, perhaps best shown when he leaves Ragatha and Pomni with the abstracted Kaufmo without a second thought. It's left ambiguous if he was always like this, or if being trapped in the Digital Circus for so long caused him to develop his current persona. In "Candy Carrier Chaos," he is very briefly visibly sad when the topic of funerals is brought up, but then storms off. Episode 4 carries some implications that this may indeed be a coping mechanism for being trapped in the Circus, as Jax is shown to be utterly miserable when he can't get up to his usual antics, and genuinely tries to make small talk with Pomni in order to pass time. Episode 5 "Untitled" also goes even farther in greatly hinting that Jax is genuinely empathetic and probably was much nicer earlier on in his time with the Circus but a Noodle Incident involving his last real "genuine friends" potentially abstracting and an apparent souring between him and Ragatha in the past left him to decide to embrace a Jerkass Façade to escape from his grief. Episode 6 has him claim that nobody in the circus, including himself, is a real person anymore, so he sees no point in empathy for them, but this is an excuse more than a genuine belief he has, with his breakdown at the bathroom for his actions showing it further.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • In "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor", after sucking up Ghostly and indirectly sending Kinger and Pomni down the scary route, he gets tied up and thrown in a wagon by Ragatha so he's unable to cause any more unnecessary harm to any NPCs or players for the rest of the adventure. This may extend to his shenanigans in the last adventure, where he caused every major disaster with his recklessness, including setting the Fudge loose on Candy Canyon Kingdom. His not getting to do anything at all, juxtaposed with Ragatha and Gangle getting the Pacifist Ending to the adventure's regular route, is fitting.
    • In "Fast Food Masquerade", Gangle puts Jax through the ringer after she suggests the fast food restaurant adventure to Caine and is assigned the shift manager, to the point where he gives up on causing any harm entirely and is left a miserable wreck.
    • In "Untitled", Jax is forced into veganism after the others vote against his safari adventure, then he’s forced to wear a maid outfit for the softball play.
    • In "They All Get Guns", Jax's habit of making a joke of other people's suffering is thrown in his face, when the Disappearing NPC emerges from a bathroom stall (and disappears mid-syllable) to end the scene of Jax's panic attack.
  • Laughably Evil: He is a Villain Protagonist who has zero empathy for others, is a huge jackass, seems to care only for himself, and outwardly finds others' suffering to be enjoyable. Though, this is all Played for Laughs of course. Until episode 6 where his insistent desire to keep up the mask of being a villainous jerk with funny antics is shown to be eating away at his sanity and stability, pushing him closer to abstraction than any other of the players, nearly causing him to truly cross past the point of no return by the next episode.
  • Laughing Mad: After the shellshock of the rug-pull at the end of "Beach Episode" wears off, he surrenders almost completely to blind, overwhelming hysteria, cackling like a lunatic for a solid half-minute before anger takes hold.
  • The Leader: Jax is an interesting case. While he's far from heroic, the only reason why he's able to take charge of the other players is that they're either too mentally unstable (Kinger and Pomni), too passive (Gangle and Ragatha), or too apathetic (Zooble) to take command.
  • Lean and Mean: Jax is the troublesome prankster of the cast and is very thin and lanky.
  • Leave Me Alone!: Jax's Motive Rant in Episode 6 basically boils down to this; After doing everything he can to hurt Pomni's feelings and spoil their budding friendship, he insists that he has no Hidden Heart of Gold and that Pomni shouldn't try to see him as anything more than a cruel, violent Narcissist who hurts other people for fun.
Jax: There's nothing more to me. So please... just stop looking.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Jax is a massive asshole but he’s still ultimately a human with empathy and lines he won’t cross. Caine, being an AI, has no such limits and his Cruel Twist Ending adventure on the players in “Beach Episode” leaves even Jax disgusted with him.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": A jackrabbit named Jax.
  • Love Can Not Overcome: A platonic varient in that Jax and Pomni were becoming close in They All Get Guns, but his fear of losing any more friends to abstraction made him double down on his psychotic persona in a self-destructive attempt to shoo Pomni away.

    M-R
  • Mad Bomber: In this Japan-exclusive ad, he walks by a door with a huge armload of dynamite. When the audience sees him, he throws it away and walks off with a mischievous grin.
  • Mask of Sanity: Behind his shit-eating Card-Carrying Jerkass persona, Jax is perhaps the most mentally fragile member of the Circus. The ending of "They All Get Guns" all but outright states that he's on the verge of going insane. It's probably worsened by the fact that he's always pushing people away, and as such is turning away anyone who could possibly help him. The mask seems to have completely fallen off by the end of "Beach Episode", as Jax fully reveals just how incensed and scared he is of Caine's ability to manipulate their minds in front of everyone.
  • Master of Unlocking: Jax has the ability to collect keys even when they're not within his reach. In doing so, he's managed to collect keys to everybody's rooms in the circus, with Ragatha pointing out that he shouldn't be able to do so, and the key to the Candy Canyon Kingdom's gates, even though it was given to Ragatha. The Fudge lampshades this, calling Jax a "master of unlocking things".
  • The Millstone: He's definitely not lifting most of the Players' spirits as the "funny one". Jax's self-serving actions to deny his very real pain not only risk causing him to abstract, but are actually making every one of the Players miserable enough to potentially lean towards abstracting themselves. By prioritizing his Jerkass Façade, Jax has become a massive burden.
  • Moment of Weakness: When he pressed the red button near the end of “Beach Episode”, it’s not portrayed as a moment of intentional malice but a split decision of fear done while he was in the middle of a Panic Attack, especially considering he spent the episode genuinely aiding the other players in their attempt to escape. Jax doesn’t even seem to realize what he just did until afterwards and is immediately remorseful.
  • Monster Mouth: Whenever Jax really opens his mouth, such as when he's yelling, one side of his head opens into a gaping maw with shark-like teeth.
  • Morality Pet: Both Pomni and her evil counterpart serve as this for him:
    • Although Jax does care for the other circus members, he’ll only show it in extremely subtle ways (hiding Kinger and Gangle from abstracted Kaufmo or feeling genuine sadness at Ragatha’s backstory). However, Pomni is the one member he’ll genuinely treat as a friend and equal, to the point where he refuses to hurt her during their fight in episode 6, a grace not offered to Ragatha or Gangle.
    • Jax torments NPCs even worse than he does the other players, especially shown in episode 2 and his interactions with his “evil” counterpart. However, he’s genuinely shown to be fond of Evil Pomni during their interactions and gets along with her.
  • Moral Myopia: Jax derives amusement from tormenting the other players by physically assaulting them, putting them in embarrassing situations, or needling them about touchy subjects. However, when other players humiliate him or bring up subjects personal to him, he'll become outraged and indignant. In a notable non-positive use of a subversion, his lack of reaction to Zooble splashing him with water unlike all other times he's become upset at being made fun of shows that he's one tiny step away from abstracting.
  • Motive Rant: In Episode 6, Jax goes into an unhinged rant claiming underneath all his jerkass tendencies, he really is just as sadistic and vile as everyone thinks he is, and he will not pretend otherwise... Of course, given the subject, it's all a lie he tells himself and everyone else to avoid getting close to anyone.
  • Mr. Fanservice: No matter how heavily his cruel and self-centered behavior is deconstructed, Jax still looks really hot in that maid outfit from the fifth episode. He even acknowledges how pretty he is in a non-canon merch video after Gangle points it out.
Jax: [in a delicate voice] Oh no, she's right though!
    • Even outside of this instance, Jax has a tendency of showing off how attractive he considers himself to be with his mannerisms and he usually speaks with a very sultry tone of voice.
  • Munchkin: Jax is shown repeatedly to not actually care about engaging with the stories or characters that Caine creates, his only interest being inflicting random violence and suffering on helpless NPCs and the other players for his own twisted sense of amusement. In fact, he gets outright mad in episode 2 when the other performers prevent there from being some sort of climactic final battle with the outlaws or the Fudge (i.e. a "combat encounter"). This eventually comes back to bite him in episode 3; after he uses the vacuum to immediately suck up the NPC who was supposed to guide the group on the Mildenhall Manor adventure and indirectly causes Pomni and Kinger's separation from the group by throwing away Gangle's comedy mask, Ragatha evidently has enough of his shenanigans and ties him up off-screen to stop him from doing his usual thing.
  • Mushroom Samba: He has a weird hallucinogenic experience in "Beach Episode", after Ribbit's arm reaches out to him from a mousehole in his bedroom. His own arm glitches as he reaches back; afterwards, he has a psychedelic dream featuring Ribbit and Kaufmo's faces, ended only when Abel, Pomni and Ragatha knock on his bedroom door by coincidence as they were looking for his help in getting a key to the Chinese Room. His reaction and rainbow eyes indicate that he almost Abstracted.
  • My God, What Have I Done?
    • At the end of episode 6, he’s shown to be disgusted at himself for his Motive Rant against Pomni, sitting sadly at the back of the theater by himself and even having a Panic Attack where he starts reaching his mental limit.
    • To a lesser extent, he has two moments earlier during his fight with Pomni. First when he pushes her away after she hugs him and he looks at his hand in shock and then when she’s hurt by him declaring he’d move on and forget if she abstracted, he clearly feels bad but tries to play it off as a joke.
    • In “Beach Episode”, he’s immediately shown to be horrified at his decision to press the red button and keep everyone trapped in the circus, stuttering as he tries to explain himself. Fortunately for him, it turns out to have been a test all along by Caine, which makes Jax a whole different kind of horrified.
  • My Greatest Failure: Later episodes strongly imply that Jax had a falling out with his close friend Ribbit before she abstracted, something horrifically traumatic that Jax never forgave himself for and drove him into acting horribly abusive whenever someone attempts to get close to him. “Beach Episode” has him sadly staring at a snow globe adventure that he and Ribbit seemed to have gone on and had an argument during said time, which clearly pains Jax.
  • Mysterious Past: While everybody is divulging in their pasts before getting trapped in the Circus during Episode 5's noir bar adventure, Jax deflects by describing the plot of Breaking Bad and he is subsequently skipped over. Episode 7 adds some vague hints to his original life, and they're not pleasant; he doesn't have anybody waiting for him and apparently considers it so traumatic he'd rather stay in the Circus than go back.
  • Narcissist: He's delighted to have a vinyl figurine in his image, because "people paying money to just admire [him] all day sounded like a sweet gig".
  • Nervous Wreck: Whenever Jax is alone or just doesn't have an audience, he drops his usual smug mannerisms and is visibly on edge. It's most pronounced in "They All Get Guns" and "Beach Episode", where Jax is constantly on the verge of a Panic Attack every time he isn't interacting with anybody.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: Jax acts like a colossal Jerkass to intentionally push everyone else away so he won't be hurt in any kind of a relationship. Jax also deludes himself into believing he has a Lack of Empathy so he won't have to acknowledge that he's lonely, even when his loneliness causes him to have repeated Panic Attacks and suicidal ideation.
  • Never My Fault: Jax hardly accepts when he is guilty of something, always putting forward the idea that "we are all archetypes" and morality does not matter, even when he clearly hurts people and others tell him so, he instead takes it as a joke. Although deep down, Jax knows what he is doing is wrong and is just coping really bad about it.
  • The Nicknamer: As a Jerkass, he doesn't care to call the others by their names most of the time, instead using some insulting ones like how he calls Gangle "Crybaby"note  and "Ribbons", Kinger "Hoo-Hah" and "Nutso", Ragatha "Dollface" and "Raggy", Kaufmo "Kaufy", and either "Zoob" or "Zoobie" for Zooble. Episode 6 sees him finally nickname Pomni as well, calling her "Pom-Pom." Although in the cases of Pomni and Kaufmo, it’s more of an Affectionate Nickname.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Jax is genuinely intrigued by violence and gore to concerning degrees. Actually, he's hardly fazed by anything around him anymore and wants chaos and destruction by any means necessary. Though given that his entire villainous act is implied to be a farse to avoid hurting from his current situation in the circus, it's possible he may be less enthusiastic deep down about things than he thinks.
  • Nominal Hero: Gooseworx has stated that there is nothing heroic about him, and it shows:
    • In Episode 1, while he technically saves Kinger and Gangle from Kaufmo, he does so by knocking them into the Gloinks' pit with a bowling ball, arguably to get them out of his way so that he could jump in after them (especially seeing as how Gangle is his favorite target). Despite this, he refuses to save Zooble from being eaten just because they called him an idiot.
    • In Episode 2, Jax couldn't care less about returning the stolen syrup and is just looking for an excuse to cause violence; he immediately opts to kill the Gummi Bandits rather than just arrest them, to say nothing of how he recklessly and unapologetically endangers his colleagues. He also clearly doesn't care about Candy Canyon, happily aiding the Fudge in re-entering the kingdom to devour everybody, purely because Jax is just that bloodthirsty!
    • Episode 6 very clearly shows how self-serving he is to a fault, revealing the depths of his denial that shows how desperate he is to Never Be Hurt Again and is willing to destroy potentially his one chance to regain his humanity to save himself from the possibility of connection despite knowing deep down that his nihilistic cynicism and his nature as The Bully risks not only abstracting himself, but everyone else by making them so miserable as to play further into his delusion.
    • Subverted for once in “Beach Episode”, where he actually spends the episode assisting the other humans in their attempt to escape the circus, even doing the most to help them in the process.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Downplayed. He's the only one of the main cast to be perfectly symmetrical and have visible ears.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Jax wishes he was an inverse of this trope but according to Word of Saint Paul, he’s actually this. Jax desperately tries to paint himself as a “manipulative, evil and awful” individual with his Motive Rant in "They All Get Guns", but is clearly a “young adult scared of being vulnerable and losing control”, as he desperately tries but fails to get Pomni to give up on him.
  • Not Me This Time: When he breaks Gangle's comedy mask with a baseball, Ragatha immediately launches into him and rants at him for always doing such things and breaking her mask again. Jax is actually taken aback by this, saying it actually was an accident this time, and defends himself by saying he'd be proud of it if he meant to do it.
Jax: If I wanted to hit her, I would've... I would've just knocked it in her face. I would've hit her and I would've been proud of it!
  • Not So Stoic:
    • Downplayed. He usually acts aloof and nonchalant, but in the pilot, he gets mildly irritated when he is hit by a Gloink. Later in the episode, even he looks shocked to find out that Kaufmo abstracted, gets noticeably apprehensive when he hears Kaufmo nearby, and looks around worriedly when he notices a glitching Gloink in the Gloink lair.
    • Played straight in "They All Get Guns", where he has an emotional outburst in front of Pomni after trying to push her away and has a Panic Attack at the Favorite Character Awards, forcing himself back to calm down.
  • Obliviously Evil: If his expression and tone are anything to go by, he really thought he was just completing Caine's mission by sucking up Ghostly and truly thought they were supposed to "capture the ghosts".
    • Jax defends his treatment of Gangle by seeming to sincerely claim Gangle likes it when he’s mean to her and even voices a doubt that Gangle can actually be happy. The next episode outright shows Gangle’s traumatized by his treatment of her.
    • One possible reason he (seemingly) hit the button to trap everyone in the Circus was because he was visibly having a severe Panic Attack and wasn't thinking straight.
  • Odd Friendship
    • Despite treating her poorly at first, Jax ends up befriending Pomni over the course of the series, and by the end of Episode 5, he even decides to hang out with her after the series of lightning round adventures are over. They also team up together in the following episode. And despite his best efforts, Pomni isn't convinced by his claims of being irredeemable and beyond help.
    • Despite bullying most of the NPCs, he befriended Evil Pomni due to both sharing an abrasive and rude personality.
    • He and Ribbit are all but stated to have been very close friends when the latter was still around in the circus, despite Jax’s tendency to bully the female players most often.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Despite claiming otherwise when talking to Zooble about the potential harm Caine could inflict on the players later in the episode, he's visibly terrified when Gangle requests that he punishes anyone who doesn't do perform well at their job in "Fast Food Masquerade".
Jax: Why would you do this?
    • He gets a more subdued one in "They All Get Guns" when Pomni hugs him after Zooble's elimination, briefly enjoying it before he realizes that he's getting too attached and pushing her off.
    • At the end of "Beach Episode", he has a major Panic Attack, rushes forward, and slams the button trapping everyone in the Circus with him. Then he catches his breath and realizes exactly what he did, and in front of everyone, no less.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: If Jax isn't joking around or being mean, something's wrong.
    • Abstraction is something even Jax realizes is no joke and takes absolutely seriously. Upon seeing Kaufmo’s room abstraction, he is horrified and quickly speeds out of there, leaving Ragatha and Pomni behind. When he talks to Kinger and Gangle, he’s noticeably worried when hearing Kaufmo approaching and quickly knocks them in the Gloink Hole before hiding himself and he’s later shown to be nervous upon noticing a glitching Gloink. Even he is shown to be upset watching Kaufmo be locked in the cellar and briefly saddened at the mention of his funeral. Further adding to this, a GIGO advertisement features Jax of all people recommending that he and Pomni should stop fighting and go someplace else when they notice an abstracted player watching them, letting her escape with him rather than abandoning her or, worse, shoving her into it.
    • "Fast Food Masquerade" puts Jax through such a miserable wringer thanks to a combination of the sheer boredom of an adventure that is just a day shift at a fast food restaurant, and Gangle becoming a Mean Boss hiding behind a lot of forced positivity that Jax cannot be his typical Jerkass self lest he be cruelly punished for trying his usual menace. He makes a few token attempts at his usual bullying and then spends the rest of the episode in a listless, exhausted fugue. This leads to Jax even trying to be earnestly cordial with Pomni in an attempt to pass the time by making small talk, something Pomni registers as wholly uncharacteristic.
      Jax: How you doin'?
Pomni: Everything's been- [notices the massive change in Jax's behavior] I'm doing fine...
Jax: Wish I could say the same. [...] Later, Pomni.
    • In The Amazing Digital Circus But smol, he’s genuinely horrified at the sight of his friends all being frozen up, even muttering "No. I didn’t even get to tell them that I-"
    • In "Untitled", after Ragatha snipes at Jax's seeming lack of friendships a touch too harshly, he responds not with a prepared riposte or aloof indifference but quiet, white-hot, seething rage, eyes narrowing into pinpricks and fixing Ragatha with a positively icy glare that evolves into a leering side-eye as she awkwardly stammers and wanders off. His attempt at a nonchalant dismissal when Pomni pushes the matter further is wholly unconvincing, and certain visuals in Caine's intermission suggest there's far more to the matter than he's willing to let on. Later in the episode, after sarcastically wondering if Ragatha would apologize to him too after she blew up at both him and Pomni, Ragatha does apologize for bringing up what was a pretty sore spot for him. Jax simply wiped the smarmy grin off his face after, and doesn't make a retort or further quip. Justified given that both of the two most recent abstractions were his close friends, Ribbit and Kaufmo.
    • In "They All Get Guns", Jax, after having an emotional breakdown over Pomni trying to get him to open up to her, swears for the first time in the series. He then walks away sadly while telling Pomni to stop trying to looking deeper for into him. During the awards show, he’s shown to be genuinely upset over what he said, sitting sadly and later having a Panic Attack in the bathroom.
      • Earlier, he’s shown to be genuinely furious when he believes Pomni is blaming him alone for Kaufmo abstracting, pointing out that all of the other circus members didn’t laugh at Kaufmo's jokes either and that people who abstract aren’t pleasant to be around at all.
    • Jax possibly becomes his most enraged in “Beach Episode”, where he’s absolutely appalled at Caine for having manipulated him and the rest of the players the entire adventure, even outright calling him a "scumbag" and "liar", all while glaring at him with venomous disdain. What makes this especially noteworthy is Jax has always been the player most accepting of Caine’s adventures and eager to participate because they give him the chance to troll the other players so the fact he is the most vocally furious in the moment shows that Caine has truly crossed the line.
      • Previously in “They All Get Guns”, Jax realized he was showing his true emotions to Pomni and promptly put his facade of “the funny one” back on via disassociating. However, him lashing out at Caine in front of the others and taking his facade off to show his true emotions for the first and (so far) only time represents how truly serious the situation is.
      • His behavior throughout the episode in general is far different from usual, with him not engaging in any of his bullying towards the others. Noticeably, when Zooble dumps a bucket of water on his head (his Berserk Button being made the butt of the joke), he barely even reacts to it. This shows how close to abstraction he is throughout the episode.
  • Out of Focus: In "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor". Aside from vacuuming up the introduction ghost and throwing Gangle's comedy mask through the Scary Door, Jax doesn't get to do much throughout the episode due to Ragatha and Gangle tying him up and gagging him.
  • Pantsless Males, Fully-Dressed Females: Inverted. Jax is a male cartoon rabbit that wears a pair of overalls, while his former best friend Ribbit is a feminine cartoon frog and the only thing she wears is a bowtie.
  • Paper Tiger: For all of Jax's rude, aggressive attitude, he's only capable of getting what he wants because of the other players don't make more of an effort to put him in his place. It's best shown with how he's easily apprehended and tied up in episode 3, not even attempting to break out of his restraints for the rest of the episode until after he's brought back to the circus.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Heavily implied in "They All Get Guns"; Jax is upset when he believes that Pomni blames him for Kaufmo and other players abstracting and tries to defend himself by pointing out that people who are about to abstract "aren't pleasant to be around", implying that he and said friend had a major falling out right before the abstraction.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • He goes with Pomni and Ragatha to check on Kaufmo. While partially to avoid the Zooble adventure, his friendship with Kaufmo does suggest some part of Jax genuinely wanted to check on Kaufmo's condition, especially since he hears Kinger mentioning it seemed like Kaufmo had gone insane last time he spoke to him.
    • Although he easily could've hopped over or ran past Kinger and Gangle (as he did Ragatha and Pomni), he makes sure to push both of them into the Gloink hole with him when he heard Kaufmo coming, which definitely saved the two of them.
      • Furthermore, Jax lies to the two of them about Kaufmo’s condition and later tells Gangle when they see him that “he’s fine”. While it’s initially easy to view it as Jax being a totally uncaring jerk, the later context of how he does genuinely care but hides it (and the reveal that Kaufmo was a genuine friend of his) recontextualizes this as Jax attempting to prevent the two from panicking and freaking out. Ditto for reassuring Gangle that Zooble (who was eaten by the Gloink Queen) will be fine.
    • Despite expressing a desire to blast the bandits until they're unrecognizable, he merely ties up Max and Chad when he catches them and is perfectly fine leaving them and Gummigoo unharmed once all's said and done. The Candy Canyon Kingdom residents aren't so lucky though.
    • In "Fast Food Masquerade", after a long day at the titular fast-food, he's sort of nicer to Pomni than usual. While a lot of it can boil down to him being overworked to death by Gangle, the tone of his voice when he asks how she's doing and bidding her farewell is genuine from his part.
      • He also seems to be having a cordial conversation with her and Kinger at the end.
    • Although he accidentally broke her mask, Jax was genuinely willing to bat with Gangle and Ragatha at the start of the episode just to hang out and even attempts to explain he didn't mean to break Gangle's mask (though he also says he would break it on purpose if he wanted to and be proud of it).
    • In the GIGO advertisement video, he allows Pomni to escape with him rather than leave her to the abstracted monster.
    • Episode 5 has him continue to have genuine (for Jax standards) conversations with Pomni across the various adventures, even willingly spending time with her afterwards. Noticeably, in his adventure where she's president, he actually gives Kinger a brief ordering him not to embarrass her.
    • While Jax certainly enjoys harming and/or attacking other players (i.e: intentionally stretching Pomni's arms to form a bridge in "Candy Carrier Chaos" and hunting Gangle as a rhinoceros in "Untitled" as one of his suggestion adventures), even he knows when it's not good to fight back against someone. In episode 6, despite Pomni attacking and biting him, he refuses to fight back and hurt her, only throwing her off him in self-defense. Earlier in the episode, he also apologized to her when he accidentally shoots her as they’re up against Kinger.
    • In "Beach Episode", Jax donates his keys to Pomni, Ragatha and “Abel” so they and the other players can all escape the circus. Considering he tried to stay in his room by himself afterwards before Pomni convinced him otherwise and is implied to not want to return to the real world, this wasn’t pragmatic or to benefit himself in any way, truly being done to help them. The most he does is constantly point out how suspicious Abel is, which is proven completely right.
      • After his conversation with Caine, he goes out of his way to tell him the players have a “surprise” planned for him in the circus, so he won’t bother coming to check on the other players as they try to escape. This is noteworthy because this wasn’t even planned or something he was told to do, meaning he went the extra mile just to help the other players.
  • Phrase Catcher: Ragatha is likely to shout "JAX!" at him when she gets annoyed by his sarcastic remarks.
  • Pie-Eyed: Jax had these during the anime segment of episode 5 instead of his usually square pupils. Given that everyone else was drawn in an anime style, it made him look cartoonish by comparison.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Deconstructed. Jax believes that his character archetype is "the funny one", and he does things that any normal comedic relief would do, from being The Gadfly to Breaking the Fourth Wall. However, what Jax fails to realize is that the players aren't one-dimensional archetypes like he believes, and instead have actual feelings and emotions, meaning the things he does that would normally be funny to audiences instead come across as cruel and tactless.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain:
    • In episode 5, Jax seems to have some insecurities surrounding his masculinity and appears to have traits of toxic masculinity. Jax uses "the pinnacle of masculinity", and "peak male performance" while stargazing with Pomni, doesn't trust Ragatha's kindness and believes it's insincere, and frequently bullies Gangle (someone very shy, submissive and constantly anxious). Jax is embarrassed about wearing a maid outfit and doesn't want to be seen wearing it, and he hates his "evil" counterpart for being shy, submissive, and weak-willed. Episode 6 actually reveals he hates his appearance and feels he looks stupid, showing he was merely masking his insecurities.
    • In the same episode, he starts cracking up at Zooble revealing their past as a tattoo artist and a bartender, obviously taking some enjoyment at the idea that they went for "stereotypical" jobs for non-binary people. Though he claims he's merely having fun and being sarcastic.
  • Pragmatic Villainy:
    • The only reason Jax appears to cooperate with the other cast members is because he wants the entertainment of whatever new adventure Caine has for him, as he otherwise doesn't seem to care for anything beyond personal gratification.
    • While Jax is a proud bully who will go out of his way to cause mayhem and make everyone feel as miserable as possible, he won't bully anyone if he knows he won't get any reaction out of them. At the end of "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor", Jax gives up on needling Pomni about her experience going through the titular adventure with Kinger when she notes how positive the experience actually was, and he doesn't bother picking on Ragatha when she's high on Stupid Sauce in "Fast Food Masquerade" because he knows that she can't properly register anything she's saying.
  • Precision F-Strike: For all his abrasive behavior, Jax hardly ever cusses. This ends in Episode 6, where he punctuates his furious Motive Rant to Pomni with an exhausted "f**k". He even briefly looks shocked and embarrassed by the slip, before screaming it again for good measure
  • Prefers the Illusion: Episode 7 reveals that in spite of almost reaching his breaking point within the digital false reality of the circus, Jax prefers it to whatever is waiting for him in the real world. When the option is seemingly given to either leave the circus or remain in the form of two buttons, Jax has a Panic Attack and rushes ahead to pick the button confining them all.
  • Properly Paranoid: In "Beach Episode", he questions Abel's story about being one of the first humans trapped in the Digital Circus, and predicts that he is a Twist Villain and his scheme to escape is one of Caine's adventures. He is completely right about everything.
  • Psychological Projection
    • He and Ragatha tend to do with this with each other quite a bit. For example, he claims to Pomni that Ragatha’s “dumb and looks weird” but the ending of episode 6 has Jax straight up telling himself “you look stupid” when he looks at his reflection in a mirror.
    • It’s very heavily implied in episode 6 when he tells Pomni about how people who are about to abstract “aren’t pleasant to be around”, he’s actually talking about himself to some degree. For that matter, it's vaguely implied that no one except himself blames him for Ribbit's abstraction in the first place.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He's a Jerkass, but he's nowhere near as mature he thinks he is. As an example, he complains when things don't go the way he wants them to (that being filled with blood and violence) and constantly teases the other Digital Circus players, among other childish things. It’s justified since Jax is twenty-two, and the youngest of the cast. Just like the rest of his more jerkish and villainous tropes, it's implied it's all a deeper part of his act to avoid facing the reality of his situation and deny himself the potential to be hurt from losing abstracted friends.
  • Punny Name: "Jax" is a play on "Jack" (as in a jack rabbit, his avatar within the Digital Circus). Jax could also be a play on jacks, a children's toy, to match the theme of the series. Finally, it may also sound vaguely like "jackass".
  • Purple Is Impure: He's a giant purple rabbit, and is by far the most jerkish character on the show.
  • Quiet Cry for Help: When he thinks that Pomni blames him for Kaufmo and other players' abstractions due to his jerkassery in episode 6, Jax vents about it, and lets something slip that Pomni picks up on mid-rant (and he does nearly abstract next episode):
Jax: [laughs bitterly] Oh my GOD! Are you seriously going to blame me for something that everybody else did, too?! You didn't even know him! You don't even know what people are like before they abstract! They are NOT pleasant to be around! Like, at all! You— [realizes what he just said and calms down]
  • Rascally Rabbit: He takes the form of an anthropomorphic rabbit and is a crafty prankster.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: "Untitled" reveals that he's quite the carnivore (ironic considering his avatar is a rabbit), to the point that Zooble forcibly turning him vegan genuinely pisses him off.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: Pomni suddenly hugs Jax to celebrate winning the gunfight match together. He's momentarily pleased, but then suddenly panics and forces Pomni off.
  • "The Reason I Suck" Speech: He uses this in Episode 6 to justify why he's such a Jerkass to everyone in the Digital Circus. Though it quickly becomes clear that he doesn't truly think the way he claims he does, beyond wanting to be left alone.
"Oh, here we go. Here we go! Because I didn't fight back, that means I secretly care about you?! I'm just a misunderstood little chicken fetus in an egg that needs to be cracked open! Well, I. Am. NOT. I do not care about you, or anyone else in this circus in the slightest! End of story! You are my playthings, and I get joy out of making you suffer! I'm the one who causes pain for fun! If I led you on, it was just to make this part hurt you more. F—k. F—K! There's nothing more to me... So please... just stop looking."
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Caine pulls the curtain back in "Beach Episode's" Abel adventure, Jax gets so genuinely upset that he snaps from a Laughing Mad fit that makes it seem like he's about to abstract, into chewing Caine out for being a lying scumbag who was stringing everyone along and got into his head so badly that he made a terrified choice, just to soothe his own ego. He goes on to point out that this has confirmed something to him about Caine as well: that he's lied about how much influence he has on the players minds and that he has been doing it consistently across the adventures. By the time Jax is through, his pressing the red button becomes a moot point as all the players wordlessly stare at Caine with varying expressions of disbelief and anger.
    S-Y
  • Sad Clown: Of the Laughably Evil variety. Jax plays up the part of a Bugs Bunny-esque prankster who's constantly cracking jokes at the expense of the other Players. Past the surface, Jax is a genuinely miserable, fragile individual who resorts to his Jerkass tendencies as a toxic coping mechanism that only pushes other people away and hates being trapped in the circus just as much as everyone else. Word of God even calls him an "unhappy pathetic character who does bad things".
  • Sadist: Jax stands out as the only main character to flat out enjoy seeing others suffer. He admits that his primary motivation is to watch "funny" things happen to people, is disturbingly eager to violently dispatch the sugar bandits when in the Candy Canyon Kingdom, and while his deal with The Fudge to let him back into the kingdom so he can eat the residents was initially so he could give them a ride, once they do manage to get back without the help of the latter, Jax happily allows The Fudge to break into the kingdom and start killing the Candy People anyways. In his full argument with Ragatha, she even asks "do you have any way to amuse yourself that doesn't involve torturing people?" He lampshades this in episode 6, saying he takes joy in making the others suffer, although his pained expressions and unnaturally forced "evil" smile through the whole thing make it blatant that this isn’t truly the case and is just a part of his coping mechanism.
  • Safety in Indifference: It becomes clear after episode 5 that Jax pushes everybody away and acts like a huge jerk to avoid growing attached to anyone around him, after he lost his friends, Ribbit and Kaufmo. Over the next episodes, this coping mechanism gradually begins to fail as he undergoes a Sanity Slippage.
  • Sanity Slippage: By "Beach Episode", his sanity has been stretched to its breaking point to the point he's stopped caring about anything in the Circus, even foregoing his usual unrelenting prankster attitude out of depression and having next to no reaction to having his usual Berserk Button pressed, he is so out of it that he locks himself in his room, stares despondently at photos of himself with Ribbit and Kaufmo, and eventually starts hallucinating Ribbit's arms coming out of a hole in his room's corner before beginning to abstract there and then. He would most likely have Abstracted entirely if not for Pomni and the others knocking on his door and startling him out of the psychedelic hallucinations he was having.
  • Sapient Eat Sapient: He tries to eat Gangle turned into a rhinoceros, and once the vegan effect on him wears off, he immediately rushes over to try to eat Evil Jax.
  • School Is for Losers: "Untitled" has Jax complain during Gangle's slice-of-life anime adventure that school is a boring and unfun place to be at.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!:
    • In the pilot, when he first witnesses Kaufmo's abstraction he gets the hell out of dodge and leaves Ragatha and Pomni to fend for themselves.
    • A more subdued example at the end of "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor". He asks Pomni what it was like being stuck with "the nutcase", ie Kinger, but having bonded with him, Pomni replies that it wasn't so bad. Disappointed that he can't screw with her, Jax rolls his eyes and leaves.
    • He spends most of his time at Spudsy's in "Fast Food Masquerade" watching the clock, desperately waiting for the adventure to end. The exact second Jax is allowed to clock out of his shift, he immediately bolts.
    • In "Untitled", already fuming at being forced into a maid's outfit, Jax's rock-bottom enthusiasm for the softball game craters even further; when called up to the plate, he immediately strikes out as quickly as he can and with all the sarcasm and apathy he can muster before quietly skulking back to the dugout.
    • When Pomni is attacking him, he briefly tries to turn and run away. He doesn’t get very far.
  • Secondary-Color Nemesis: He has purple skin and is also a narcissistic prick with a thirst for violence.
  • Secret Test of Character: Towards the end of episode 6, Pomni attacks him to see if he’ll fight back and whether he truly doesn’t care or not. He refuses to harm her, which he claims isn’t because he cares for her, but he noticeably doesn’t even try to offer a solution for why he didn’t fight back and falls back on deflecting the situation and trying to get Pomni to leave him and stop looking for more of his deeper personality aspects.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Jax appears oblivious to his own mortality (in the sense of abstracting), acting as though he will be the last person standing in the Circus. This makes sense in that he's both the youngest player and the most-recent player; disregarding Pomni, of course, who entered after him and is actively trying to get to know him. His obliviousness is emphasized in episode 6, where he says that people close to abstracting are really unpleasant to be around, though this line may be an admission.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: It's all but outright said in episode 6 that Jax's sadism and jerkassery is how he copes with everything to avoid abstraction and to avoid getting too close to others so that he doesn't lose another friend. However, this has clearly taken a massive toll on his mental health to the point where he regularly has Panic Attacks, coops up completely depressed and miserable in his room when not on adventures or pranking people to contemplate his lost friendships and nearly abstracts the next episode anyways.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The rude Manly Man to Evil Jax's gentle Sensitive Guy. This is also the case between him and Kinger, as Jax is the closed off and jerkish Manly Man to Kinger's vulnerable and emotionally wise Sensitive Guy. This is deconstructed on Jax's end, as while the other members of the circus do get annoyed with both, they're all generally more patient with Kinger given he can't help acting the way he does, while Jax is met with near-universal revile for being the shallow jerkass that he is.
  • Shallow Judge of Character: Jax mentally divorces himself from his fellow players by interpreting them as shallow cartoon "archetypes," and not only does this merely serve as an excuse for his toxic, bullying behavior, it's also clear that he's fundamentally really bad at assessing others. In Episode 6, he claims that Ragatha is "the cheerful one" (despite the episodes making it clear that she's a depressed and compulsive people-pleaser), Gangle is "the sad one" (despite being way more ambitious and willing to chase positive opportunities than she lets on), Kinger is "the crazy one" (despite displaying more than a handful of moments of lucid awareness, being wise and empathetic to boot), and Zooble is "the grumpy one" (despite also regularly demonstrating a quiet empathy for others around them, being particularly protective towards Gangle). The fact that Pomni doesn't neatly fall into a single archetype in his eyes ends up frustrating him, as it forces him to consider her closer to an actual genuine "person" and not just a cartoon, which goes entirely against his plan to Never Be Hurt Again.
  • Shark-Toothed Humanoid: Every time Jax's mouth actually opens (laughing, yelling, screaming, etc.), it's filled with razor-sharp teeth.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Whenever someone says something optimistic about their situation in the Digital Circus, Jax will usually be the one to snuff it out and follow it up by causing chaos in some pointless way for his own amusement. His frequent targets for this are, of course, Pomni and Ragatha, who try as much as they can to see the lighter side of the situation they're in out of everyone else in the cast. Rather ironic considering the fact that he's the literal rabbit in this case. "Untitled" and "They All Get Guns" all but outright state that it's part of his attempts at pretending nothing matters in the Circus to avoid going insane or hurting from seeing what's happened to other players that abstracted happen again.
  • A Sinister Clue: Jax, the most unpleasant out of everyone at the circus, is also a lefty.
  • Slasher Smile: His constant smug grin can occasionally veer into this when he's at his most "playful." During his meltdown at the end of Episode 6, it turns into a stiff and furious rictus so big that his face is mostly teeth.
  • Smug Smiler: Jax's smile coupled with his sassy manners and his sneaky eyes are a way to make him all the more insufferable to his comrades.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He's a mean bully with the smoothest voice in the show.
  • Sole Survivor: Was in a trio with Ribbit and Kaufmo but in present day, both of his friends have abstracted.
  • Sore Loser: Jax hates it whenever people manage to one-up him. How does he react to Ragatha managing to take a life off him by accident? Filling her full of bullets until she's a pile of stuffing on the floor. He also attempts to throttle Gangle when she causes him to be put in a maid outfit against his will.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Implied to be the case in "Untitled", where we see that he's not as unaffected with being trapped in the circus as he may seem. He talks big and bullies others and acts out on his own because it's heavily hinted that the only real friend(s) he may have had could have already abstracted, with both "They All Have Guns" and "Beach Episode" removing the ambiguity outright when it's shown Ribbit and Kaufmo (the two most recent abstractions) were once in a friendship trio with him and their loss began his downwards descent into abstraction. Another instance of the implication is his breakdown at the Favorite Character Awards, where after his emotional outburst in front of Pomni, he has a Panic Attack and has to actively force himself back to normal.
  • Spotting the Thread: Jax is the first person to realize that Caine is lying about the extent of his abilities, noticing that Caine making him go vegan during Untitled contradicts his claim that he can't control the players' minds.
  • Stepford Snarker: By "Untitled", it becomes immensely clear that Jax's bullying and general dickishness is his way of coping with the circus. On the rare occasion where Jax does express any kind of vulnerability, he immediately falls back on his Jerkass behavior as a mask.
Jax: I don't know, I just- I think [Ragatha] tries way too hard. Like, we're stuck in- Why are you always pretending everything's always fine? Like, if you tell someone they're loved and appreciated every day, it just... kind of loses all meaning. [sighs] It just feels like she's trying to take advantage of you, you know? I don't know. [Beat] Also, she's dumb, and she looks weird!
  • Sticky Fingers: He has a habit of stealing and pickpocking keys, mostly so he can explore otherwise off-limit areas and set up pranks.
  • Straw Misogynist: Downplayed in that while Jax never vocally states anything misogynistic towards the women of the group, he quite clearly targets them for inflicting pain and abuse (although occasionally Zooble too) over Kinger and it's confirmed he was close friends with Kaufmo too, furthering this. While it could be chalked up to mere coincidence since there's more women than men in the Circus, Word of God implies that this is intentional targeting and the result of some of his issues, which is implied to be the loss of Ribbit (who used she/they pronouns). Ironically, both of the two player's he's shown to have had his closest bond with are women, those being Pomni and Ribbit.
  • Straw Nihilist: Subverted. He seems to dive straight into this when Pomni wants to believe that he actually cares about her deep down and is just in denial about it. Jax responds by going on a nihilistic rant about how he does not care about her or anyone else in the slightest, that she could abstract tomorrow and he wouldn't give a crap, because as far as he is concerned, she and everyone else are his playthings that he enjoys making suffer. He doesn't believe any of the words he rants about getting upset with himself for hurting Pomni with it later on, as it's all part of his failed attempt at coping with the reality of his entrapment in the Circus and avoid getting attached to the others emotionally for fear of losing them to abstraction. Further compounded by his genuinely defeated attempt at getting Pomni to leave him alone.
  • Sympathy for the Hero: In "Untitled", after Ragatha reveals her past with her emotionally abusive mother, even Jax can only give a look of genuine sadness when hearing the story rather than make fun of her for it or try to undermine it.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: He's one of the tallest members of the Digital Circus (Kinger being slightly taller), has very vivid lavender skin, and is never afraid to speak his mind, even the insensitive things.
  • Thin-Skinned Bully: Jax is simultaneously the most abrasive and the most sensitive member of the cast. He will gleefully make fun of and abuse others for his own enjoyment, but when the tables are turned and he becomes the butt of the joke, he is unable to handle it and becomes upset. He loses his mind when the rest of the players (except Pomni) vote to put him in an embarrassing maid outfit and yells, "I don't wanna wear this!!"
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Goes both ways in Beach Episode: On one hand he absolutely rips into Caine for stringing him and the other players along making them think they could escape the Circus with his elaborate adventure ploy and even potentially getting into his head to force him to push the red button to keep him and the other players trapped in the circus. On the other hand, he did push that red button, and while it's portrayed sympathetically from the viewers point of view, the only reason no one else calls him out on it is because all of them are reeling from Caine's revelations and the implications of Jax's accusations towards him.
  • Token Evil Teammate: The other players range from being friendly enough, like Ragatha and Gangle, to mentally disturbed but rather harmless, like Kinger and Pomni, to being a bit grumpy, like Zooble, but Jax is an outright douchebag who pulls mean pranks on the others. He's noticeably the only member Pomni doesn't imagine saving her at the end of episode 2, and he even skips Kaufmo's funeral, although his microsecond of sadness implies he does mourn for him and is trying to avoid showing vulnerability. Exaggerated by him in "They All Get Guns" during his Motive Rant where he claims he really is just the villain who sees the others as “playthings” and doesn’t care for anyone in the circus. Pomni doesn’t believe it and neither does he, despite his attempts at playing it off.
  • Tombstone Teeth: His teeth usually appear as a single row of long rectangles, and don't separate even when he's talking (except when he's doing a Wild Take, such as when Zooble is choking him, where they're shown as shark-like teeth).
  • Took a Level in Cynic: By the time of "Beach Episode", his guilt over the fight with Pomni has left him a depressed shell of his former self, making no attempt to be the usual bully he is and leaving the others alone as he sits off on his own, to the point where he's seemingly willing to let himself abstract too. Even when he joins the gang at Pomni's request, he still almost never has his usual smile return to his face.
  • Took a Level in Kindness:
    • Downplayed as it's only towards Pomni but still present. In episode 2, Jax doesn't remotely hesitate to violently grab Pomni by her neck and throw her out of a moving truck, or order Gangle to ram the truck with Pomni still inside. In the next episode, he also lets her hand smack into her face with no remorse, showing he'll torment her just as much as the others. However, starting from "Fast Food Masquerade," Jax slowly but surely starts opening up to Pomni and seeing her as his Only Friend over the next couple of episodes. It gets to the point where he not only apologizes for accidentally shooting her, but he doesn't even try to hurt her as she's actively attacking him.
    • Downplayed again in "Beach Episode." While it's more down to him being too depressed to be his usual, sadistic self, he is less mean to the other characters than usual. He doesn't retaliate against Zooble for dumping water on his head and when Gangle couldn't open the door to the Chinese Room, he just walks around her to do it himself rather than pushing her aside. He even helps the other players in attempting to escape the circus despite openly suspecting that it's another of Caine's adventures.
  • Toon: Jax uses very dynamic movements, as well as cartoonish visual effects like leaving a smoke silhouette when running away, pulling items out of nowhere and breaking the "Spare" pop-up.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Subverted despite Ragatha's worries. In "They All Get Guns!", Pomni and Jax open up to one another, with Jax even successfully getting Pomni to get into the Heel role to be able to chase down and shoot the other players in the circus. However, in spite of their bonding, Pomni retains a strong moral compass and treats the adventure a lot more like a game than truly adopting any loose moral standards (and it helps the other players except Ragatha also showed no hesitation to engage in full force with the adventure and have fun while at it), with her even showing a willingness to still talk with Ragatha despite the awkwardness the two have endured.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Ragatha accidentally slams his Berserk Button by bringing up he has no friends (rather, "not anymore"), he doesn't insult her or even say anything at all. He just fixes her with a Death Glare. When she apologizes later, his eyes become arguably the widest they've ever been and his expression becomes disturbingly unreadable as he assesses her walking away.
    • In a more subtle way, during Gangle's manic episode at Spudsy's he fights back as much as he can despite the restrictions of the adventure. In particular he looks her in the eye and flat-out tells her that he prefers her when she is sad after she has heaped a ton of work on him unfairly while wearing her overbearingly positive persona - which hurts her deeply - then hammers it in by plainly saying the adventure was not fun at all as he leaves a clearly drained Gangle at the register.
  • Transhuman Treachery: Jax justifies his abusive behavior towards the others due to everyone becoming Toons. He no longer sees himself as a "person" but as an "archetype", that of the "funny one". It's implied that this is his defense mechanism against getting attached to anyone in case they abstract, like his friend, Ribbit.
  • Trauma Button:
    • Abstraction as a concept comes close, and those he knew that abstracted even more so. Just seeing Ribbit's face on the door is what prompts him to push Pomni away as the memories come back especially after realizing that he's truly grown to care for her and thinking that he's being accused of pushing people to abstraction by Pomni causes him to explode in a hail of screaming and psychological projection.
    • Something that he did or happened to him in the real world is this as well, he is so traumatized by that, in fact, that he impulsively tries and keep himself trapped in the Circus so as to not confront reality, even apparently trapping the rest with him in a fit of panic without even realizing it and regretting it when done.
  • Troll: His introductory short has him trip Ragatha for no reason other than personal amusement, sporting a cheeky grin on his face the whole time. He also shoves Gangle during her intro just to break her mask.
  • Troubled Abuser: As the show goes on, it becomes clear that Jax isn't an entertainingly dickish asshole, he's an actively toxic presence whose relentless bullying has traumatised other members of the main cast, Gangle and Ragatha especially. Episode 6 shows he is this way due to deep-seated self-loathing and fear of growing close to the other characters for fear of getting hurt if/when they abstract. “Beach Episode” heavily implies his life in the real world was even worse, to the point he’d actually prefer to stay in the circus.
  • Trying Not to Cry: During the Favorite Character awards show, he becomes visibly remorseful when remembering his fight with Pomni and seems to be about to tear up, before he runs to the restroom and has a Panic Attack.
  • Tsundere: As Word of Saint Paul accurately states, “he acts like a dick to hide the fact he has feelings”. No matter how Jax desperately tries to convince the others and even himself otherwise, he does care for his fellow captives more than he lets on.
  • Twitchy Eye: After he finishes his Motive Rant at the end of They All Get Guns, he turns around with a Broken Smile and twitching eye, before he starts cursing and lashing out, making it clear that even he himself doesn’t believe what he’s saying to Pomni and knows it’s all bullshit.
  • Unluckily Lucky: In "Beach Episode" the only reason Jax doesn't get chewed out for his action of supposedly damning all the members of the Circus to being trapped for eternity is that Caine shows up moments later to explain that they had been on an adventure the whole time and they were being manipulated, all of which overrides their anger for Jax until the episode's end.
  • The Un-Reveal: After the end of Episode 5, it's not revealed what Jax showed Pomni of the "thing in the hall" off-screen.
  • Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: One of the show's main cast members, and a highly apathetic Jerkass who really only cares for his own ends, of which is Played for Laughs. It's downplayed, however, as while the show makes it clear his actions are way too cruel to be truly good, he's also not a flatly bad guy that he desperately wants to act like, and is instead as much of a victim of the Circus as the rest; with his psyche and trauma playing up a lot of sympathy for him.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight:
    • Despite Caine specifically stating he doesn't have control over the players' minds, he still succeeds in making Jax vegan against his will in Untitled, something that perplexes Jax personally, but he and the rest of the players move past it without question.
    • From Pilot to Untitled Jax does not have a tail, a joke being made at his expense when Pomni points out he's Inexplicably Tailless, in the very next episode, he has a tail and no one, not even Pomni makes a comment about it.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He messes with Zooble in Episode 6 by exposing them while they were hiding to avoid Caine, leading to Caine's increasingly erratic behavior as he and Zooble express their frustration with each other. This isn't helped by Jax's refusal to participate in Caine's trust exercise.
  • Verbal Backspace: Anytime Jax shows a shred of genuine care or vulnerability, he always follows it up with... being himself, implicitly to cover it up. Ironically enough, he ends up pulling a reverse of his usual shtick after he claims that he would move on and forget about Pomni if she abstracted, clearly regretting having said it, by claiming it was a joke.
  • Verbal Deflection: Often his way of avoiding showing vulnerability/admitting he does care deep down. The prime example being after Pomni attacks him at the end of "They All Get Guns" and she questions why he didn’t fight back; rather than answering the question, he instead simply denies it means he cares for her and goes on a desperate Motive Rant to push her away from him but noticeably never once gives an actual explanation for why he didn’t fight back.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: "Candy Carrier Chaos!" shows that he loves indulging in this. Not only does he act even worse to his teammates, but he also doesn't give a damn about the NPCs and will happily try to kill them for his own amusement. It's part of his attempts at detaching himself from all emotion and reality to avoid hurting or acknowledging the terrible situation he's in.
  • Villainous BSoD: Suffers a MASSIVE one in Episode 6. After giving an impassioned Motive Rant about how he's a shameless, awful prick and doing everything he can to ruin his and Pomni's budding relationship, Jax is later seen on the verge of tears while recalling his actions at the Awards and realizing Pomni is nearby he ends up having a Panic Attack in the bathroom before he barely pulls himself out of it.
    • Happens again in “Beach Episode” when he and the other players are seemingly about to get the chance to return to the real world.
  • Villainous Rescue: Downplayed as he’s more of a gigantic Jerkass than genuinely evil. He saves both Kinger and Gangle from abstracted Kaufmo as the latter is approaching the three of them by throwing a bowling ball at the two, which hides them in the Gloink Hole.
  • Villain Protagonist: Deconstructed. He's one of the protagonists, but is a spiteful jerk who tends to go against the other players and antagonize them. Ultimately, his attempts to be this hurt the other players greatly and is possibly causing them to dive down straight into abstracting.
  • Visual Pun: Taking both his misleading sarcasm and only his lips moving when he talks into account, he can be said to be "lying through his teeth". Taken further when he starts "explaining" that he views the other players as his playthings and that he was never friends with Pomni, with both his huge, faked grin and widened eyes showing just how fake and forced his ramblings are.
  • Vocal Evolution: His voice is slightly lighter and higher-pitched in his debut, compared to the deeper and more sardonic performance given in later episodes.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: After playing his part in the plan by distracting Caine and stealing the master key, Jax smugly brags about it and insults Zooble to boot. This spikes an argument where Zooble tells him off for expecting praise for doing the bare minimum to help for once and speculates he outright made their job harder. This actually makes Jax upset, and he tells them they have “no idea what I had to do to get this" - which is justified since he had to literally dig it out of Caine's throat.
  • Wants to Be Hated: He does his best to be despised as much as possible by the other players by mistreating them whenever he can. As many of the other entries attest, it's revealed to be part of a coping mechanism to distance himself from others.
  • We Used to Be Friends:
    • Considering Jax mentions he originally used to think of the players as people and that his personality is heavily implied to his coping mechanism to Ribbit's abstraction (which happened before Kaufmo's), it's likely Jax used to be much nicer at a point in time and why this applies with the others.
    • It's heavily implied in episodes 5 and 6 that Ragatha and Jax used to be on friendlier terms. As they're all out stargazing in "Untitled", when Ragatha remarks on how Jax doesn't have friends "anymore" to Pomni, he angrily glares at her under the belief that she's bringing up Kaufmo and Ribbit's abstractions, but she tries to clarify that’s not what she meant. In "They All Get Guns", she tells Kinger how she feels as if she's "failed" Pomni the same way she "failed" Jax, worrying Pomni will be an entirely different person who'll outright hate her before she knows it, indicating the same thing must have happened with Jax.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Jax is merely a jackass to his fellow players, but is outright bloodthirsty when NPCs are involved, happily arranging for their deaths for no actual benefit other than amusement and outright disappointed he didn't get to maul them himself. He even explains in "They All Get Guns" that he doesn't view any of the players in the circus as real people and more akin to cartoon archetypes, so any grievances they take with him are invalid in his mind.
  • When He Smiles:
    • Downplayed as he smiles a lot already, but a brief moment in "They All Get Guns" sees him sporting a softer, more genuine-looking smile compared to his usual Cheshire Cat Grin whenever he bonds with Pomni. His smile is also complimented with his eyes and brows slanting downward as he accepts her display of affection after they win the game.
    • In “Beach Episode”, he smiles again while remembering his times with Ribbit and Kaufmo although it’s darkened by the fact he almost ends up abstracting during this.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Jax is oddly terrified of corn on the cob, and flinches whenever he sees it. While talking about Jax's fear of corn with him, Pomni correctly deduces he has a form of trypophobia, as he shudders when she explains what the phobia is, and Jax is similarly disgusted by the mention of pomegranates.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Whenever Jax gets set off, whether by trauma or just anger, his pupils shrink to points. It's a pretty good tell of when he's losing his emotional control, demonstrated in Episode 6 when he stops in the middle of a tirade to force his emotions back down and his pupils rapidly grow as he plasters a smile back on his face.
    • Jax also manages to invert this trope: when he puts more effort in maintaining his uncaring persona and masking his stress, his pupils grow larger. This is particularly evident when he dares Pomni to shoot him in the head in Episode 6.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Frequently bullies Ragatha, Pomni and especially Gangle, and isn't afraid to get physically violent with them.
    • In the pilot, he shoves Gangle aside to get on the escalator before her.
    • In episode 2, he grabs Pomni by the throat and tosses her out of the tanker and later shoves Ragatha into a pile of knives.
    • In episode 4, he throws Ragatha into a deep fryer. Additionally, we get a double subversion at the beginning — he hits Gangle with a baseball, but insists this time it was an accident... and his evidence for that is the fact that if he wanted to hit her, he would've done it and been proud of it.
    • In episode 5, he shoots Gangle and tries to eat her. And then when Gangle calls a vote to forcibly put Jax in a French Maid Outfit, he furiously chases her with the clear intention to beat her up in retaliation.
    • In Episode 6, he shoots the entire cast indiscriminately during their battle royal game, but seems especially amused to shoot Ragatha- though he notably avoids fighting back at all against Pomni when she starts attacking him during their fight. He denies it having anything to do with caring about her, but considering how ready he is to inflict violence on everyone else...
  • Wrong Genre Savvy:
    • Jax views the players as a bunch of cartoon characters who all fit archetypes where he sums up everyone in the group, including himself, using a single trait each. While he's right the show is a cartoon and the basic archetypes he uses for everyone do apply to each of them, none of them are the Flat Characters he views them as, with even his own role as "the funny one" being deconstructed in a way that gives him depth through the expense of his mental health.
    • Subverted in Episode 7, where he's unable to buy into Abel's plot to break everyone out of the game, regarding him as a "twist villain" made by Caine. It turns out that he's Right for the Wrong Reasons; the whole thing is just another of Caine's adventures, but the whole group was in no danger if they actually chose to go with Abel.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: The sclera of his eyes are yellow, and he's very underhanded and manipulative. In addition, his stealth levels are to the point where he somehow has access to the keys to everyone's room as well as being able to steal the key to the Candy Canyon Kingdom's gates from Ragatha without her realizing.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: His primary color is purple and his eyes, gloves, buttons, and teeth are yellow.
  • Yes-Man: No matter what adventure Caine has planned, Jax is almost always the one egging it on and the only one to enjoy it. In "Beach Episode", Jax is the one to distract Caine from the escape plan and does so by pandering to his ego. The twist reveals Caine had planned out the "adventure" to railroad Jax into this position, having genuinely believed Jax liked him and his adventures and wanted to spend time with a human he thought enjoyed his company.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: His conflict with Pomni in a nutshell. While Jax tries to convince them both he's just a heartless bully and nothing more, Pomni believes there's still humanity in him and he’s just scared to show it.
  • You Monster!: He gives a very well-deserved one to Caine at the end of "Beach Episode", furiously calling him out as a "dirty liar" and "scumbag".

"God, you look stupid..."
