Oscar "The Sharkslayer"

Oscar is the son of Earl who was a tongue scrubber at the Whale Wash of Southside Reef. Oscar dreams of living at the top of the reef someday.

• Accidental Murder: Oscar was indirectly responsible for Frankie’s death, but it wasn't really done on purpose. Lenny cut him loose and Oscar unwittingly swam past an anchor as Frankie was chasing him, resulting in the anchor falling on Frankie and killing him.
• Adaptational Badass: While he's an utter wimp and a Fake Ultimate Hero in the movie, the console tie-in game ups his combat ability to the point where, despite still running from Frankie and Don Lino, he actually takes down a hostile hammerhead shark in a hand-to-hand fight, something he never did in canon. Because of this, he never confesses he lied, because he never did.
• Adaptational Deviation: Never confesses that he lied to being the Shark Slayer in the game because he actually slays a hammerhead shark.
• All of the Other Reindeer: Oscar's insecurities of being a nobody started when his classmates mocked his dream of being a "tongue-scrubber" like his father. Even as an adult, Oscar is still pushed around by everyone (sans Angie and Lenny) around him.
• Ambitious, but Lazy: Oscar is a Social Climber who ends up in debt trying to take shortcuts to success, and gambles away the money he owes the mafia to instantly get successful.
• Anti-Hero: A self-centered and egotistical conman who mainly goes up against the sharks for personal gain rather than genuine altruism, and makes some very unethical plays to ensure his survival (most notably faking Lenny's death). In spite of it all, however, he has a good heart and becomes more genuinely heroic as the movie progresses, and he does broker peace between the fish and sharks by the end.
• Asshole Victim: Oscar was nearly one for Frankie until the anchor landed on the latter.
• Attention Whore: He’s obsessed with becoming famous, and upon finally gaining celebrity status, he greatly enjoys it. He grows out of it, though.
• Big Guy, Little Guy: Little Guy to Lenny's Big Guy.
• Blatant Lies: His lie about the Sharkslayer story set the movie into motion.
• Blue Is Heroic: Oscar has blue colored fins and is the hero.
• Boisterous Weakling: For all his smack talk, Oscar is defenseless when faced with a shark, Ernie and Bernie, or even just an angry Lola.
• Break the Haughty: Angie's romantic confession for him, as well as her blunt comments about his fame as a "Sharkslayer", truly made him reconsider his public recognition.
• Broken Pedestal: To Angie. Her "Reason You Suck" Speech and subsequent redemption made him a Rebuilt Pedestal.
• Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: He's the anxious Brooding Boy to Angie's Gentle Girl.
• Buffy Speak: Oscar wanted some of the "wiener thingies" at the race track.
• Bully Hunter: The reason Oscar takes advantage of his Sharkslayer status at the shark meeting. He goes to Lino's face, a.k.a the boss at the very top of the food chain (the one Sykes told that Oscar was at the very bottom), and tells him his reign is over. He probably waited for years since elementary school to prove himself as a "somebody". Subverted since Oscar is a Cowardly Lion at best and can't hold his own in a fight.
• Butt-Monkey: Despite being the main protagonist, Oscar is the biggest punching bag in the film by far. He was bullied as a child and is abused by Sykes such as when he has Ernie and Bernie give him a black eye and then tie him up and torture him in the middle of nowhere for failing to get his money. He also is a massive coward and wimp who hides behind Lola after hearing that a shark has been found in the reef, and even minor attempts at trying to be more cool often results in failure such as when he tries to wear a cape for his fake sharkslayer stunt and the cape entangles him up. Even after he becomes famous, he manages to remain a punching bag by entering an abusive relationship with Lola who slams him against his own lava lamp for his obedience and sneaks up on him for a public make-out session where she controls what happens. Once he finally breaks up with Lola, which was completely unrelated to her prior abuse of him, he ends up getting slammed across a wall repeatedly in his own penthouse in public viewing of other fish, who don't even react much to it.
• Cassandra Truth: He was responsible for Frankie's death but he wasn't the one who killed him, an anchor was dropped in the ocean and Frankie was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
• Catchphrase: "Old school!"
• Cement Shoes: Played with as he's a fish and therefore can breathe underwater. He is Bound and Gagged and tied to a rock with seaweed and left out in the water to be taunted and stung by Ernie and Bernie and eventually eaten by sharks.
• Character Development: Oscar goes from a Jerk with a Heart of Gold to a Nice Guy after he realizes how stupid and selfish he had become. In the end he aims to become a better friend and drop his previous antics. He also realizes being a manager of the Whale Wash is better than being a Sharkslayer.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Bumped up to this in the console tie-in game; while still a goofy, fame-hungry coward, Oscar actually manages to take down a giant eel, Lenny and a hostile hammerhead shark in hand-to-hand combat. Even in the movie, he did actually outsmart and humiliate Don Lino with a trap.
• Deceased Parents Are the Best: Oscar's dad passed away some time before the movie started. To Oscar, his dad was his hero. He admired that he was the #1 employee at the Whale Wash for 25 years. He also has an incredible amount of love and respect for him despite the fact that kids viewed him as a "nobody". This implies that while his father wasn't rich or famous, he was at least a great dad.
• Didn't Think This Through: Oscar's prone to making foolish decisions without thinking of the consequences:
  • Takes credit for killing a shark without realizing the following:
    1. He is clearly not a fighter. He keeps it going even after he finds out Frankie was the son of Don Lino (y'know, the guy who rules the Reef with a criminal empire of sharks) and decides to pretend to kill Lino's other son. Even if that decision was made under Lenny's advisement, Oscar doesn't get any points for being surprised when the Don retaliates the loss of both his kids by taking Angie hostage. Averted in the game where he is a fighter.
    2. People would expect him to fight sharks from now on.
    3. Said shark likely has family and friends who won't take kindly to his death.
  • He bets the money he owes Sykes (which Angie gave him her grandmother's pearl to get) on a rigged seahorse race, not even considering the idea of his horse losing (though to be fair, everyone was expecting the horse to win, so Oscar probably thought he had nothing to worry about). Sure enough, when it happens, he's unable to pay the money he owes Sykes, which results in Ernie and Bernie almost killing him on Sykes' orders.
  • He breaks up with Lola and doesn't think anything bad will come from it.
• Distracted by the Sexy: Oscar becomes mesmerized by Lola when he first sees her and completely forgets about the 5,000 clams that he bet on Lucky Day immediately. He still gets mesmerized by Lola later on when she meets up with him at his penthouse and when she slams him on his lava lamp while seducing him.
• The Ditz: Demonstrates a distinct lack of common sense and repeatedly makes poor decisions that bite him in the ass later. He sells Angie's pearl and bets the money on a rigged seahorse race instead of using it to pay off his debt to Sykes, takes credit for killing a shark without considering that he'll have to fight more of them, and is completely oblivious to Angie's feelings for him no matter how obvious she is about them, only getting the picture after she flat-out tells him.
• The Dreaded: While having a meeting with the sharks, they can barely keep themselves from Quaking with Fear while in his presence.
• Dude, Where's My Respect?: Oscar's main motivation for becoming famous and a "somebody" is based on the idea that he gets no respect from anyone.
• Earn Your Happy Ending: Being a false "Sharkslayer" is one thing, but becoming a somebody with both Angie and Lenny in the end? Now that's even better.
• Entitled Bastard: Oscar dreams of fame but doesn't do anything to achieve it for himself, relying on get-rich-quick schemes and generosity. When Frankie dies (indirectly through Oscar and Lenny's actions), he takes the credit for it without thinking twice about the consequences.
• Extreme Doormat: Is beaten, assaulted, and mistreated by Lola, yet he never objects or protests in any way besides breaking up with her, though him breaking up with her is completely unrelated to her prior abuse of him. Averted in the game where he is a competent fighter.
• Fake Ultimate Hero: Oscar decided to become the "Shark Slayer". In the game, on the other hand, he does slay a hammerhead shark and does become the "Shark Slayer".
• Fatal Flaw: His impulsiveness and blunders are his biggest flaws. He winds up in crippling debt to Sykes because he just can't stop taking out loans for get-rich-quick schemes that inevitably fail, and even when his life is on the line, he just can't resist betting the 5000 clams he owes Sykes on a seahorse race. To say nothing of his plan to become famous by claiming to have slayed a shark, which snowballs until he ends up face-to-face with Don Lino himself.
• Flanderization: In the PC version of the video game, Oscar's even worse. He doesn't pay his rent for three months because he is too lazy and cheap. It's even worse because one of the missions in the game actually revolves around you getting him to the racetrack in time to bet Sykes' money.
• Foil: To Lenny. Oscar initially wanted to follow in his father's footsteps by working at the Whale Wash (only to hate it as an adult - he tells Angie she is the only reason he still comes to work), while Lenny does not want to follow in Don Lino's footsteps. Oscar is small, Lenny is big. Oscar is implied to be an only child, while Lenny has a brother, Frankie (until Frankie is killed by the anchor). Oscar's father is implied to be dead, while Don Lino is very much alive. Oscar is an Idiot Hero while Lenny is The Smart Guy.
• Friend-or-Idol Decision: Eventually, Oscar had to choose between his fame and Angie, his Best Friend and Love Interest. He picks the latter.
• Friend to All Children: The Shorties, while they love to tease him, clearly see Oscar as one of their own.
• Gambling Ruins Lives: Gambling almost ended his life.
• Girl Next Door Turned Superstar: Before Oscar becomes famous with his "Sharkslayer" ruse, his friend and co-worker Angie is shown to harbor a secret crush on him. She finally confesses her love when confronting him about his Acquired Situational Narcissism and hot new girlfriend Lola.
  Angie: Just tell me, Oscar, 'cause I'm curious. Why do you think she's interested in you, huh? Do you think, for one minute, that she would even be with you if you weren't the rich-and-famous Sharkslayer? Are you that blind?!
  Oscar: At least she treats me like I'm somebody!
  Angie: Yeah, but would she love you if you were nobody?!
  Oscar: Nobody loved me when I was nobody!
  Angie: I did! Before the money... And before the fame... Before the lie... To me, you ''were'' a somebody, Oscar. And now, you're nothing... but a fake. A sham, a con. You're a joke.
• Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: After learning that he took credit for killing Don Lino's successor, he doesn't understand why Lino will want revenge for his son's death. He then participates in the better idea of staging Lenny's murder afterwards, Don Lino's second son. Oscar either believes the sharks are that afraid of him or he believes he can keep staging shark attacks until Lino gives up.
• Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Lenny; after the two are forced to team up, they eventually become best friends.
• Homeless Hero: In both the console and PC versions of the tie-in game, he has an apartment, but is quickly evicted for not paying his rent and does not obtain another home until his lies land him a high-rise apartment. This implication carries over to the movie proper, where he does not appear to have a proper home until he becomes the sharkslayer.
• Hot-Blooded: Oscar is quite impulsive and doesn't think twice before acting.
• Idiot Hero: A variation; he's not actively stupid, but he is extremely impulsive and tends to make a lot of stupid decisions because of that. For example, Angie gives him a pearl that he can use to get out of his debt to Sykes (who will have him killed if he doesn't pay it), but instead of paying him, Oscar instead bets (and loses) it at the seahorse races.
• I Just Want to Be Special: He wants to be rich and famous, but his get-rich-quick schemes landed him in debt. Seeing that Ernie and Bernie think he killed a shark, he takes advantage of this.
• I Lied: Directly lampshades this after his confesson.
  Oscar: "I AM NOT A REAL SHARKSLAYERRR!!!" [The general public is in shock.] "I lied."
• Informed Attribute: Oscar complains about how nobody likes him, even though pretty much everyone in town already seems to like him and he clearly has plenty of friends at the wash.
• Informed Species: He's supposed to be a cleaner wrasse, but he doesn't look like one. Or any sort of fish at all, for that matter. Truth be told, he just looks like a miscolored Will Smith with a tailfin.
• Ink-Suit Actor: As stated above, his facial features represent Will Smith to a huge extent.
• Insufferable Imbecile: Lacks a ton of intelligence or common sense as the protagonist, and is also a self-centered Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist throughout most of the movie. He does have some Pet the Dog moments, however.
• It's All About Me: Oscar dreams of becoming rich and famous and living at the top of the reef. To accomplish this, he has no qualms about lying to everyone and taking credit for a shark's death, and unintentionally discards the people in his life (although he does get better about it).
• I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Just as he and Angie were reconciling with each other in the climax, the paparazzi then interferes their personal moment together, causing Angie to leave him with his fame. Knowing this, he boldly decides to confess to the public about his false "Sharkslayer" status for her, which greatly pleases her.
• Jerkass Realization: Angie gives him a reality check after she confesses to him about her feelings for him, slowly making him realize that his fame as a false "Sharkslayer" has been turning him into a "nobody" (as he puts it to himself).
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While done superficially, Oscar comes off as stupidly brash and makes impulsive and selfish decisions, but once he realizes he's in the wrong, he'll do anything to make it right again for his friends. He can also be a very friendly guy who admired his loving father, cares for his friends, and doesn't want himself or anyone else getting hurt because of his actions.
• Jive Turkey: "OLD SCHOOL!"
• Job Title: For the working title, "Sharkslayer".
• Large Ham: Will Smith is clearly having a blast as Oscar.
• Leitmotif: His leitmotif is rap music.
• Like Father, Like Son: Played for Drama. At the beginning of the film, Oscar works at the Whale Wash as his late father did before him. Though Oscar dearly loved his father, he fears that the latter was ultimately a nobody, and is desperate not to end up like him.
• Love Revelation Epiphany: After Angie admits she did love Oscar before he let his success go to his head, Oscar spends the rest of the night depressed. When Lola mocks her admission and asks if he even has feelings for her, Oscar realizes that he does indeed love Angie.
• Manchild: Oscar is clearly a grown adult, but is shown to be rather dense, lazy, cowardly, and at times extremely selfish. He's desperate to find riches and fame, but has no further ambition for doing so besides wanting to be a "somebody", which is heavily implied to stem from an actual childhood trauma when his classmates laughed at him for having a father who worked as a tongue scrubber.
• Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: When Oscar enters a relationship with Lola, Lola wears the pants in the relationship and is the dominant one as Oscar is seemingly happy to be the submissive one in their relationship. Oscar doesn't seem to mind that Lola spins him around instead of him spinning her and actually seems to enjoy it, even enjoying Lola pinning him down after his fake sharkslayer stunt with him taking the stereotypical position of the woman and Lola the man. Additionally, Oscar is the victim of domestic abuse from Lola after she viciously beats him up when he breaks up with her (which was unrelated to her taking on the traditional masculine role in their relationship) which makes Oscar a domestic abuse victim despite him being a male and Lola a female.
• Money Dumb: Much of Oscar's troubles in the first half of the film stem from his irresponsible spending. He is in significant debt to Sykes due to taking numerous "advance payments" that he wasted on failed get-rich-quick schemes. Even when Angie gives him her treasured family heirloom specifically to get the money he needs, Oscar can't resist betting it on a horse race and loses all of it.
• My God, What Have I Done?: Oscar's reaction after Angie told him that he became a fake after his lie.
• Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The attention-seeking Mean to Lenny's Nice and Angie's In-between.
• No-Respect Guy: At the whale wash, only Angie seems to respect him. After becoming the Sharkslayer, Lola enters a relationship with him and shows him absolutely no real respect, instead belittling and mistreating him.
• Oblivious to Love: He was unaware that Angie was in love with him. That is, until she said something.
• Official Couple: Becomes one with Angie at the end.
• One of the Kids: He fits in quite well with the Shorties.
• Pet the Dog: Even if Oscar can be egoistical and selfish at times, he's not a bad fish at heart:
  • He gets along quite well with the Shorties. He tries to lead them into a good path by telling them to stop spray-painting on public property, even if he admits they have the art skills for it.
  • Even if he ended up betting on Angie's grandmother's pearl, Oscar initially hesitates to accept her gift. He later rebuys it for Angie and even turned it into a beautiful pearl necklace to thank Angie for supporting him.
  • His whole friendship with Lenny is this. While at first Oscar is annoyed by him, he comforts him when he cries over Frankie's fate, and tells him there's nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, even telling him honestly that he wishes all sharks were like him. Later in the movie when Lino screams at Lenny for faking his death and supposedly turning against the family, Oscar is quick to jump at his defense.
  • The Stinger implies that he gifted his penthouse to Crazy Joe, especially since he was shown to be homeless throughout the movie.
• Pinned to the Ground: Downplayed; when Lola sneaks up on him after his fake sharkslayer stunt, she pins him down underneath her as she pulls him into a passionate kiss with her in the dominant position. Though he's not pinned to the ground by this, due to them being fish and able to swim, he remains pinned underneath her for the whole duration of the make-out session.
• Screams Like a Little Girl: Oscar does this a couple of times.
• Self-Serving Memory: Played for Laughs. When he feels tempted to bet on the seahorse race, Oscar hesitates and tells himself to remember what Angie said to him the night before. He then has an Imagine Spot where Angie enthusiastically tells him to "bet it all", which is not at all what she told him to do.
• Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: He is the Manly Man to Lenny's Sensitive Guy.
• Slow "NO!": Oscar yelled this as he saw Lucky Day trip.
• Social Climber: Oscar wants to be rich and famous, but never puts in any effort to achieve this beyond coming up with half-baked get-rich-quick schemes. After failing to pay his debts, Oscar is left to die and he accidentally kills a shark when he tries to run away from him. Oscar then tells everyone he killed the shark on purpose and thinks everyone will leave it at that. Except, he didn't just take credit for killing a shark, he took credit for killing the son of Don Lino, the leader of the sharks. Now Don Lino wants payback and everyone expects Oscar to defend the Southside Reef from the shark mafia.
• Too Dumb to Live: Oscar repeatedly makes stupid, impulsive decisions that should have, by all means, resulted in his death. In particular, he bets the 5000 clams he owes Sykes on a horse race despite knowing full-well that Sykes will have him killed if he doesn't pay him back, he fails to escape when Lenny tells him to (which almost gets him eaten by Frankie) and he keeps up the Sharkslayer lie despite being a complete wimp who has no chance of beating a shark in a fight.
• Took a Level in Kindness: Oscar became more gentle after becoming friends with Lenny and learning how much harm his lie caused.
• Turn the Other Cheek: After he confesses to lying about being a Sharkslayer, no one seems to hold any ill will against him. Except maybe Lola.
• Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: He's a self-centered con man who wants to be rich and famous and doesn't value the people in his life he already has, and Oscar is thoroughly superficial. In spite of that, Oscar cares about his friends and eventually realizes the error of his ways.
• Used to Be a Sweet Kid: As a child, Oscar looked up to his father, a whale washer, and wanted to become just like him. But when he told it to his class, he got mocked and rejected by his peers. This caused him to be deeply insecure about being a "nobody" and why he cuts corners in order to be rich and famous.
• Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Oscar never attempts to defend himself in any way when Lola slams him against a giant lava lamp, forcefully makes out with him in public, or assaults him for ending their relationship. However, Oscar appears to be too weak to be able to defend himself from Lola.

Leonard "Lenny" Lino

Lenny is the second son of Don Lino who is repulsed by meat and wants to be accepted as a vegetarian. He has a much more gentle nature than his older brother, Frankie.

• Accidental Murder: He unwittingly caused Frankie's death by refusing to eat Oscar, causing a pursuit that resulted in Frankie being killed by an anchor.
• Alliterative Name: Lenny Lino.
• Ambiguously Gay: He comes across as effeminate and soft-spoken, and his vegetarianism is treated as analogous to a Coming-Out Story.
• Annoying Younger Sibling: Seen as such by Frankie, although he cares about his brother regardless.
• Beware the Nice Ones: He's a cuddly, friendly guy who wouldn't willingly hurt a fly, but he's still a shark who's also the son of a mafia boss. He effortlessly blackmails Oscar into letting him come home with him or be sold out to Lino, and he later pretends to eat Angie with such ferocity that even the other sharks are shocked. Even before all this, Lenny does hit a Rage Breaking Point during the restaurant scene where Don Lino tries to force him to eat a shrimp, showing that even then Lenny will stand up for himself if pushed too far.
• Big Guy, Little Guy: The Big Guy to Oscar's Little Guy.
• Big "NO!": Lenny yelled one after the death of his brother.
• Blackmail: When Oscar refuses to let Lenny stay with him, Lenny changes his mind by threatening to tell people Oscar isn’t really a shark slayer.
• Blunt "Yes": Lenny says one after Oscar asked if Don Lino was like the Godfather.
• Cain and Abel: The Abel to Frankie's Cain.
• Cloudcuckoolander: The only shark to be considered this way.
• Cuckoo Snarker: A little eccentric he is, he still is able to dish out some snark when he feels like it.
  Frankie: Sorry, pops. Lenny had an accident: he was born!
  Lenny: [''sarcastic laugh''] You're a comic genius.
• Cuddle Bug: He's very affectionate with those he trusts. When he successfully gets Oscar to hide him, he immediately starts hugging him to the point where one of the first ground rules Oscar lays down involves "no more... snuggly... buggly... whatever that just was".
• Daddy Issues: While his dad loves him, it's completely understandable why Lenny would run away from home and live a new life being himself. His dad pressures him greately to live in his image and always be his family no matter what. Their relationship does get better by the end though.
• Demoted to Extra: In the console game, most of his plotline is cut out to focus on Oscar. He doesn't even properly meet Oscar until roughly two thirds of the way into the game. However, he's still playable in two late-game levels where Oscar rides on his back.
• Deuteragonist: The secondary protagonist of the movie — his vegetarianism and family issues get almost as much focus as Oscar's dreams of making it big.
• Does This Remind You of Anything?: It's very easy to read his vegetarianism as an allegory for being LGBT.
• Dumb Is Good: Compared to his brother and father, he isn't that bright but is the kindest and nicest shark out of them all.
• Earn Your Happy Ending: After he confesses his vegetarian choices to his father Don Lino, the two reconciled with each other, meaning that Lenny doesn't have to worry about his vegetarian lifestyle as a shark anymore.
• Effeminate Voice: Lenny has a high-pitched voice compared to the other sharks.
• Extreme Omnivore: He will happily eat anything except fish. When he vomits out Angie near the end of the movie, he also vomits out leaves, a license plate, a beach ball, and a violin.
• Fat and Skinny: The Fat to Oscar's Skinny.
• Foil: To Oscar. Oscar initially wanted to follow in his father's footsteps by working at the Whale Wash (only to hate it as an adult - he tells Angie she is the only reason he still comes to work), while Lenny does not want to follow in Don Lino's footsteps. Oscar is small, Lenny is big. Oscar is implied to be an only child, while Lenny has a brother, Frankie (until Frankie is killed by the anchor). Oscar's father is implied to be dead, while Don Lino is very much alive. Oscar is an Idiot Hero while Lenny is The Smart Guy.
• Friend to All Living Things: He's a vegetarian who would rather befriend fishes than eat them. His first scene has him freeing a worm from a hook, and he later frees some shrimp from the shark's lair instead of eating them like Lino wants.
• Genius Ditz: While he can be quite absent-minded at times, he's pretty good at thinking up strategies, as seen as he's the one who has the idea of faking his own death and helping Oscar keep up his Sharkslayer act. Don Lino acknowledges this, even calling him "the brains" of his two sons.
• Gentle Giant: He's a great white, but he would rather be friends with fish than eat them.
• Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Lenny believes that staging his own death will be enough to deter the sharks from attacking Oscar, even though it will give Lino another personal reason to go after Oscar. As shown later on in the movie, the sharks start using a different strategy to eliminate Oscar and they choose to abduct Angie at Lola's suggestion.
• Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Oscar; they become best friends after being forced to team up.
• In Touch with His Feminine Side: Besides not wanting to be a predatory shark himself, he's also very emotionally expressive, in stark contrast to both Frankie and Oscar.
• It's All My Fault: He initially blamed himself for Frankie’s death.
• Large Ham: Well, he is voiced by Jack Black, after all.
• Like Father, Unlike Son: Lenny is a vegetarian, while his father and brother are carnivores.
• Manchild: To a much more innocent extent than Oscar, but still present. Lenny is implied to be at least a young adult, apparently being old enough to inherit his father's business, but is shown to be very sheltered and naive. He childishly bickers with Frankie, is heavily implied to be a Momma's Boy, and he knows almost nothing about the reef outside his home and relies on Oscar to hide and protect him.
• Morality Pet: He ends up becoming one towards Oscar. As much of a Jerkass Oscar can be, he truly sees Lenny as his best friend and looks out for his well-being once he warms up to him.

• Vegetarian Carnivore: Lenny's a shark who decided to go vegetarian to the point where the very thought of eating meat makes him nauseous. He disguises himself as a dolphin in order to prevent other fish from fearing him, even though dolphins are also predators.
• Virtuous Vegetarianism: Lenny's closet vegetarianism is an early indication that he's the White Sheep of his family, who are essentially an undersea version of The Mafia.

• Affectionate Nickname: Oscar notably refers to her as "Ange" on occasion.
• Anguished Declaration of Love: She makes one when Oscar rants about how his life wasn't special until he became the "Shark Slayer".
• Betty and Veronica: The Betty to Lola's Veronica. Angie wins.
• Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: She's the affectionate Gentle Girl to Oscar's Brooding boy.
• Cannot Spit It Out: She's in love with Oscar, but she can't admit it. When she does, it's at a point wherein she realizes he's a jerk.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: She clearly gets jealous of Lola dating Oscar. Although in her defense, Lola being a Gold Digger and a Manipulative Bitch towards Oscar doesn't help.

Don Edward Lino

Don Lino is the head of his great white shark gang. He cares a lot about his two sons, Frankie and Lenny.

• Actor Allusion: He is not the only crime boss Robert De Niro has ever played in his career.
• Archnemesis Dad: He and his younger son Lenny originally had a conflicting relationship because he expects the latter to become a predator, when all he wants is to simply be a vegetarian.
• Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: As much as he is initially frustrated at his younger son's dietary choices, he still clearly loves Lenny no matter what.
• Benevolent Boss: Despite being greatly feared by the wider reef, Lino is a highly respected and beloved figure within the Shark mafia. He's even shown to have a soft spot for Sykes, until the latter pushes his Berserk Button.
• Big Bad: After Oscar tells the lie about killing Frankie, Lino becomes the main antagonist on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
• The Comically Serious: Lino himself is a consistently serious character while the world and people around him... are not.
• The Don: But of course. What better profession for a Threatening Shark than a mob boss?
• The Dreaded: Being the head of the shark Mafia will make you that. When he walks into the sit down, the heroes freeze at the sound of his voice and both Lenny and Sykes have trouble looking him in the eye. The only character who is never nervous around Lino is Luca, likely because he's too dense to be scared. Even the whales, which are much bigger than he is, flee in terror when he charges into the Whale Wash near the end of the movie.
• Earn Your Happy Ending: Reconciling with his son Lenny after accepting the latter's vegetarian lifestyle made him feel more relieved than before.
• Equal-Opportunity Evil: Lino’s outfit includes both great whites and hammerheads, one of his friends is a leopard shark, his right hand man is an octopus and his allies include orcas and swordfish.
• Establishing Character Moment: Lino sums himself up pretty neatly during his meeting with Sykes. Mainly that he is The Dreaded to the fish of the Reef (very much including Sykes) but loves his sons dearly and being well aware of their strengths (brawn for Frankie, brains for Lenny). He vouches for Lenny when Sykes scoffs at the idea of working for him, showing that despite being a little embarrassed by his youngest son he has a great amount of faith in him. On the flip side, Lino also displays a short temper (he brought Sykes into that meeting to tell him the chain of command was changing but ended up firing him instead) and is shown to be in denial about Lenny's unwillingness to kill/eat meat.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
  • He greatly cares for his sons, though is upset with Lenny being a vegetarian.
  • He cares for his pet piranhas, even speaking to them in baby talk while feeding them.
  • He even treats his fellow sharks well.
• Even Evil Has Standards: When he takes Angie hostage as a means of forcing Oscar to stop being the Sharkslayer, Lino is legitimately shocked when Oscar pulls a Shoot the Hostage move by having Lenny "eat" Angie.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Until the end of the movie, he couldn't understand why Lenny refuses to be a predator. Lino also fails to understand why Oscar would want to kill a shark since Lino did nothing to make it personal; even though his mafia has been actively hunting in Oscar's part of the reef, so any fish would have had a good reason to fight back.
• Evil Is Bigger: 'Evil' is pushing it but he is much bigger. Oscar is at most as tall as his head, and even if you don't count the fish, Lino is easily the largest shark in the movie.
• Evil Old Folks: While he may not look that old, Lenny's character arc is kickstarted by Lino retiring from the mob business and passing the torch onto his sons. Though it was only implied in the actual movie, it's confirmed to be the case in the video game, the PC game and the junior novel.
• Evil Sounds Deep: He's The Don of his shark mafia who speaks with Robert De Niro's natural low voice.
• Family Man: As the film likes to play up that particular aspect of the Mafia, one of the most prominent aspects of Lino we see is his devotion and adoration of his sons. Even when Lenny's differences frustrate him, Lino refuses to write him off, instead insisting their family works together. At the sit down with Oscar, he makes it clear that he's not hitting the 'Sharkslayer' back as a show of strength, but because he believes Oscar murdered both of his children and he wants justice.
• Fat and Skinny: The Fat to Lola's Skinny.
• Felon's Failson: Don Lino has two sons, and while Frankie is very much a cold-blooded killer like his father, Lenny is an effeminate ditz who can't bring himself to hurt anyone. Then Frankie dies in the initial "Shark Slayer" incident, leaving Lenny as the heir to Don Lino's criminal empire, something neither he nor his father are happy about.
• Hair-Trigger Temper: Played more subtly than most examples, but he does have a short fuse. Probably best established in his first scene with Sykes. After the 'you said what first' conversation and being mildly embarrassed by Lenny, Lino jumps from telling Sykes the chain of command is changing to firing him and forcing him to pay protection.
• Heel Realization: When Oscar confronts him in the end for not accepting his son, Lino finally realizes that he never supported Lenny for being who he is. After a few moments of thinking, he asks to be freed so he can hug his son and apologize.
• I Have Your Wife: With Lola's help, he tries to get revenge against Oscar by kidnapping Angie.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He comes off as this at the end when he learns to accept Lenny for who he is and stops being hostile towards Oscar and the fishes.
• Large and in Charge: The biggest shark in the movie and the top of the food chain (as Sykes put it).
• Love Redeems: After learning the truth about the death of Frankie, he apologizes to Lenny and makes peace with the Reef.
• My God, What Have I Done?: He seemed to regret having been tough on Lenny at the restaurant during Frankie’s funeral, muttering: “I said some things to him.”

• "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Lino gives Lenny one when he realizes that Lenny is not only alive and pretending to be a dolphin, but he's palling around with the fish who he believes killed Frankie.
  Don Lino: Are you kidding me? Are you kiddin' me, are ya outta your mind?! Do you have any idea how this looks?.. What are you doing with this guy? He took out your flesh and blood, Frankie.
  Lenny: But, Pop, just listen...
  Don Lino: But nothing! You never take sides against the family. Ever!
• Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After Frankie's apparent murder — left unpunished and the killer publicly rewarded, mind you — and funeral, Lenny — whom he probably considered more helpless and vulnerable — ran away and reappeared only to seemingly be slaughtered by the very fish responsible for Frankie's death. This spurs Lino into taking revenge against Oscar, the "Sharkslayer", first by kidnapping Angie on Lola's suggestion, and then, when Lenny is revealed to have faked his death to live as a dolphin, going into a bloodthirsty rage and trying to eat Oscar outright.
• Tough Love: Not at first, but as Lenny continuously fails to conform to shark tradition (eating meat and hunting live prey), culminating in the scene at the restaurant, Lino decides that Lenny needs to learn how to be a shark whether he actually wants to or not. This mindset is eventually deconstructed as it forces a rift between the two of them and Lenny feels so inadequate and ashamed that he runs away.
• Tranquil Fury: He walks into the sit-down with Oscar looking thoroughly sorrowful, then he hears Oscar indirectly insulting him and the grief hardens into cold rage. His calm eventually breaks after Lenny is revealed to be alive.
• Unstoppable Rage: During the sit down with Oscar, he finds out that his dolphin friend is actually his son Lenny, and thinking he turned him that way and murdered his son on purpose, he goes on a high speed chase out for Oscar's blood.
• Wrong Genre Savvy: Primarily played for humour, he and the other sharks are written like characters from an old-school Mafia movie (more specifically, The Godfather) and to be fair, he is a powerful Don with an iron grip on the Reef, but his traditional way of working clashes with the flashy, up and coming, gangsta-like Oscar. At the otherwise tense sit-down, he's left utterly flabbergasted at the antics of Oscar and co. and after the climax he proves to be stumped by slang like 'yo' and 'what's up' in a... let's say a conversation with Sykes.
• You Killed My Father: Inverted, he believes Oscar killed his two sons: first Frankie, and later Lenny when the latter fakes his death (Don Lino then thinks Lenny avenged his brother).

Francis "Frankie" Lino

Frankie is the first born son of Don Lino and Lenny's older brother. He was killed by an anchor, but Oscar takes credit for his death, setting the plot in motion.

• Alas, Poor Villain: Not exactly a villain, but he's still mourned by Lenny and the other sharks after he dies.
• Ax-Crazy: He enjoys hunting and killing a little too much.
• Big Brother Bully: He loves to tease and smack around his brother, but the two still love eachother regardless.
• Big Brother Instinct: It's here deep down. When Lenny hits his Rage Breaking Point at the restaurant, Frankie looks upon the scene in shock and even tries to convince their father he can lead the reef by himself so that Lenny isn't forced in a life he doesn't want to.
• Blood Knight: Loves to hunt and kill and judging by the many scars on his body, he's more than happy to fight people just as big or bigger than him.
• Cain and Abel: The Cain to Lenny's Abel.
• Covered in Scars: To highlight how hyper-violent he is, and it's especially noticeable when you compare him to his younger brother. Frankie's body is absolutely laden with scars and all of his fins have chunks torn out of them.
• Dope Slap: Frequently does this to Lenny and in a tragic twist, it's the last thing Frankie does before he dies.
• Dumb Muscle: Not to extremes, but he's undeniably more brutish than Lenny, and his father outright says that muscle is Frankie's strength while Lenny has the brains.
• Even Evil Can Be Loved: Though he's a thug, he's still loved by his family and the entire shark mob, and they grieve his death.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While he makes fun of Lenny, he really does care about his well-being and is worried that he may not fit in with the family business.
• Graceful Loser: Despite his failure from hunting down Oscar due to his untimely death via an anchor, he ultimately lets himself succumb to his fatal injuries.
• Greater-Scope Villain: It's his will to hunt down Oscar that kickstarted the film's entire plot, which has his death being exploited by Oscar himself as a means to be famous as a false "Sharkslayer".
• Hair-Trigger Temper: He's quick to lash out and is very temperamental.
• Hidden Depths: While he seems like just a brute at first glance, he's surprisingly perceptive and a caring brother. Not only does he seem to realize before his father that Lenny can't become what Lino expects, he makes an effort to bail his younger brother out only to be overruled.
• Hot-Blooded: He's very impulsive and short tempered much like his father.
• If You Won't, I Will: What causes his death. Frustrated with Lenny's refusal to eat Oscar, Frankie gives chase with intent to do so instead. The rest, of course, is history.
• I'm Cold... So Cold...: Lenny replies, "That's because we're cold blooded." Frankie hits Lenny and replies back, "Moron".
• Innocent Bystander: Not innocent per-say due to him being a bloodthirsty shark, but he was clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time when that anchor dropped.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rough around the edges (as are all sharks sans Lenny) and will tease Lenny until he dies but he really does love him and just wants him to get figured out so they can move on with their lives. Notably, in one of his rare moments of reflection at the restaurant, he looks genuinely afraid that Lenny is getting roped into a life he doesn't want/can't handle.
• Like Father, Like Son: In contrast to his younger brother, Frankie shares a lot of similarities with his father pre-Character Development. Mainly, he's happy to stick to shark tradition, has a short temper, and genuinely loves Lenny despite him being an oddity.
• Plot-Triggering Death: Oscar's lie, a major plot point, was kickstarted after the anchor kills him.
• Secret-Keeper: According to books, including an essential guide, Frankie is revealed to know Lenny's secret about being a vegetarian and proved to be a loyal brother to him, keeping it for him. Which explains why Lenny gave hints that he knows his secret when he was trying to teach how to be a shark like him.
  Lenny: Frankie, you know I can't do this.
• Small Role, Big Impact: Frankie is killed at the end of the first act, but Oscar taking credit for his death sets the film's main plot in motion.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: Only gets a couple scenes of development before his death, and is primarily used as a catalyst for the Shark Slayer story afterwards.

Luca

Voiced By: Vincent Pastore (movie)

Luca the Octopus works for Don Lino and became his right-hand fish after Sykes started paying Lino protection.

• Affably Evil: He's always friendly and cheerful, but still works for a violent mob shark.
• Artistic License – Marine Biology: Real-life octopuses have their mouths being located underneath themselves. Luca, meanwhile, has a mouth that's near his eyes.
• Captain Obvious: When Lenny is revealed to be alive, Luca goes on a long tirade spelling out exactly what's going on, to the other characters' annoyance.
• The Consigliere: Subverted; you'd expect he'd fall in this role, but in fact, he's very stupid.
• The Ditz: Most of Luca’s scenes involve him doing something dumb. For example, while Don Lino is talking to Oscar on the phone, Luca tries to call a pizza place and accidentally calls Don, then asks his boss why he’s working in a pizza place.
• Funny Octopus: Luca is the comic relief for the sharks.
• Laughably Evil: While he's Don Lino's right hand man, he's very dumb and clumsy to the point of providing comedy whenever he's on-screen.
• Token Minority: Is an Octopus in the Shark Mafia.
• Villains Out Shopping: In a deleted scene, Luca plays the piano nicely.

Don Feinberg

Voiced By: Peter Falk (movie)

Don Ira Feinberg is the Don of a group of leopard sharks and an old friend of Don Lino.

• Abhorrent Admirer: Tries to put the moves on Lola. She is noticeably repulsed by him.
• Affably Evil: In his short screentime, he's shown to be a highly respected and amiable Cool Old Guy, giving Lino his condolensces for Frankie's death. Though he's still a mobster, like Lino himself, and his main contribution to the plot is informing Lino of the Sharkslayer, indirectly making Oscar a target for the sharks.
• Ambiguously Jewish: He is voiced by the Jewish Peter Falk and has a stereotypically Jewish-sounding name. With the sharks clearly being inspired by the mob, having prominent mobsters of Jewish descent is actually very accurate.
• Anti-Villain: Compared to Don Lino, there is no known significance of villainy in him.
• Dirty Old Man: Is clearly elderly, and at one point flirts with the attractive and notably younger Lola, to her disgust.
• Evil Old Folks: A downplayed example. He isn't that evil compared to Don Lino.
• Gasshole: He farts during Frankie's funeral, causing the orca behind him to faint.
• Take That!: His wanting to listen to "My Heart Will Go On" is treated with shock and horror by the other sharks.
• Villainous Friendship: With Lino, though he's not shown doing much that's "villainous".

Sykes

Voiced By: Martin Scorsese (movie), Sean Bishop (games)

Sykes is the owner of the Whale Wash. He is secretly a loan shark to Don Lino.

• Affably Evil: Downplayed in that he's more jerkish than truly villainous, but despite his association with the Mafia, he also has decent relations with them. In addition, as irritated as he was towards Oscar, he's at least trying to be a Benevolent Boss to his employee.
• Benevolent Boss: While he's shown acting hostile towards Oscar (often justifiably so) it's implied they usually get along well, and Sykes is generally a generous and well-providing employer towards everyone who works for him, and will even give them their pay checks early if needed. In addition, after he offends Don Lino, the latter specifically threatens the Whale Wash when demanding protection money, implying that Sykes is not only desperately trying to save himself, but also wants to protect his employees from Lino's wrath.
• Big Ol' Eyebrows: Just like the real Scorsese's.
• Comically Missing the Point: He misreads Oscar's attempts to stop smack-talking Lino as more ways to do so.
  Oscar: SYKES, SHUT UP! [points the phone] SHUT! UP!
  Sykes: Hey, that's good. That's good, I like that! [in the phone] Shut up, Lino! Ha! Shut up!
• The Dragon: He starts off as Don Lino's henchman, before getting fired for cracking wise one too many times.
• Helium Speech: Whenever he inflates, Sykes' voice becomes much higher-pitched.
• Idiot Ball: Despite knowing that Oscar is an impulsive charlatan with a history of falling for get-rich-quick schemes, Sykes arranges for him to deliver the money he owes by meeting him at the race track. Unsurprisingly, Oscar can't resist the temptation to bet all the money he owes Sykes on a horse, and loses it as a result.
• Jerkass Has a Point:
  • While Sykes offends Lino by criticizing his son, he is proven completely correct in his assessment that Lenny isn't a cold-blooded killer like his father or brother, which Lino sees for himself during an argument with Lenny.
  • Although Sykes resorts to extreme methods to ensure Oscar pays his debts, he rightfully points out that Oscar has burned a significant hole in the company's finances with the funds he's taken and has been reckless and incompetent when spending it, and is perfectly justified losing his temper when Oscar initially tries to deny this. His point is only further proven when Oscar pawns one of Angie's possessions for the money he owes, only to risk losing it all by betting it on a horse race (and then losing his bet).
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sykes means well, despite his Mafia ties. He genuinely likes Oscar in spite of the latter’s massive debt, and only sends Ernie and Bernie to torment him as a last resort. He’s nevertheless supportive of Oscar’s newfound celebrity status, going as far as proclaiming himself to be Oscar’s “manager”. Once Oscar confesses the truth, Sykes is mortified but continues to support the ruse. He also seems to be aware of Angie’s feelings for Oscar and was concerned when Angie saw Lola’s onscreen kiss with Oscar.
• Loan Shark: Sykes is not officially a lender by trade, but it's indicated that he's given Oscar money for all the latter's past Get Rich Quick Schemes, which have never been paid back since these schemes all failed. By the time the movie rolls around, Oscar owes Sykes a whopping 5,000 clams, which Sykes finally demands back after losing his mafia protection, and he resorts to unsavory methods to ensure Oscar's compliance.
• Motor Mouth: Sykes is prone to going on long, fast-paced tangents with little space between each word. Given that he is voiced by Martin Scorsese, this was inevitable.
• Never Lend to a Friend: Oscar is one of Sykes' employees and it's implied that they normally get along well. In the past, Sykes has given Oscar 5,000 clams worth of loans for Oscar to use on various investments and business ideas, all of which have failed. Sykes finally demands that Oscar repay him when he desperately needs protection money to give to Don Lino, though Oscar's impulsiveness only makes things worse.
• Rage Breaking Point: Sykes is already on a knife's edge when Oscar gambles away the protection money on a racehorse (although he is genuinely happy once the horse Oscar bet on seems to be winning, and does a victory dance with him), but when the horse trips, falls, and ultimately loses, he finally has enough and decides to get rid of Oscar once and for all. Though Oscar does ultimately survive, and his Sharkslayer ruse turns out to be beneficial for both him and Sykes.
• Secret-Keeper: It's heavily implied that Sykes knows about Angie's secret crush on Oscar, as when Lola kisses him on live TV, he visibly dreads Angie's reaction to it.
• Turn the Other Cheek: Oscar doesn't hold the fact Sykes ordered his death against him, accepting him as his new manager and letting him profit off his image.

Ernie and Bernie

Ernie and Bernie are two Jamaican jellyfish twins who work as bodyguards/enforcers for Sykes at the Whale Wash. They later become their co-worker Oscar’s friends, after previously bullying him.

• Actor Allusion: When Oscar sings a horrible rendition of "Three Little Birds", Ernie gives him a Dope Slap and states "That's not da way you sing dat song, man!" Ernie is voiced by Ziggy Marley, Bob Marley's son.
• Affably Evil: They're pretty affable and friendly to those they aren't ordered to kill. They even befriend Oscar a few minutes after trying to kill him.
• Ax-Crazy: A downplayed variation, in that they have no qualms with killing people under Sykes' orders and even take a sadistic amount of glee in torturing Oscar while Sykes isn't overseeing them.
• The Bully: Mainly towards Oscar, until they both became friends of his, that is.
• Bully Turned Buddy: They soon became good friends with Oscar in the end after having to tease him for so long.
• Co-Dragons: Personal assistants to Sykes.
• Dreadlock Warrior: Their tentacles and bells resemble dreadlocks and hats, and they work as the physical enforcers for Sykes.
• Dumb Muscle: They serve as Sykes' enforcers, and they’re not too bright.
• Electric Jellyfish: The two even made a joke about their stinging.
• Electric Torture: They enjoy electrocuting other fish with their tentacles.
• Heel–Face Turn: Once Oscar becomes the famous "Shark Slayer", they quickly befriend him. Even after the ruse is exposed, they continue to support him.
• Karma Houdini: They face no consequences for trying to kill Oscar, and even earn his friendship with little difficulty.
• Rhyme Theme Naming: Ernie and Bernie.
• Sadist: Before becoming friends with Oscar, they took pleasure in electrocuting him.
• Scary Black Man: They invoke this. They're both voiced by two African-American actors and they're both very sadistic and ruthless enforcers of a loan shark.
• Shock and Awe: Their stings electrocute every fish they touch, except for each other.
• Space Jews: Between their accents, their love of reggae, their voices making it sound like they're stoned, and their bells and tentacles resembling rasta caps and dreadlocks, they're obviously based on stereotypes of Jamaicans.
• Those Two Guys: They are always seen together.
• Took a Level in Kindness: They become a lot nicer after Oscar makes friends with them.
• Torture Technician: Their main body of work involves enforcing Sykes' orders with the occasional spot of murder, but they also enjoy torturing other fish with their tentacles whenever Sykes isn't around. Oscar learns this the hard way when they decide to have some fun before they get to killing him

Lola

Voiced By: Angelina Jolie (movie), Seana Kofoed (games)

Lola is a lionfish who is very provocative and is attracted to fish who are rich.

• All for Nothing: Lola's greedy and vengeful schemes ended up being for naught after Oscar publicly confessed his false identity as a "Sharkslayer", since that made her plans meaningless in the end. Even worse for her, she attempted to "reconcile" with him, only to find that he's not there, but rather Crazy Joe.
• Alpha Bitch: A superficial Femme Fatale who's only interested in Oscar just for his fame as a "Sharkslayer".
• Amazonian Beauty: Because her curvy design lacks Non-Mammal Mammaries, she looks strong and muscular. She looks less like a fish with boobs, and more like a fish with pecs.
• Aroused by Their Voice: Lola has a soft, seductive voice, courtesy of Angelina Jolie.
• Aside Glance: As she kisses Oscar in public, she can briefly be seen glancing at the camera as they are being filmed, hinting she wants to make sure the public knows about their relationship, before returning her focus back to Oscar as she makes out with him.
• Beauty Is Bad: She’s considered drop-dead gorgeous by fish standards, and she’s the most despicable character in the movie.
• Berserk Button: Getting dumped. When Oscar dumps her, she not only beats him up for it, but she teams up with the sharks to get back at him.
• Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Angie's Betty.
• Bright Is Not Good: Lola dresses in a very flashy and colorful way, and is a manipulative and abusive gold digger.
• Card-Carrying Jerkass: She outright calls herself "really superficial" to Oscar's face in her very first scene.
• Concert Kiss: After Oscar pretends to defeat Lenny, the thousands of celebrating onlookers are treated to the sight of Lola pinning Oscar down and making out with him.
• Corrupted Character Copy: Of the 1990 Dick Tracy film version of Breathless Mahoney. Both ladies are quintessential Femme Fatales who were attracted to different protagonists for personal reasons, to the point where they became obsessed because of them. While Breathless did truly loved Dick Tracy, only being jealous that Tess Trueheart was with him, Lola was only into Oscar for his fame and fortune as a "Sharkslayer", and is even willing to spite Angie just for her to stay away from him.
• Death Glare: Lola gave a frightening one to Oscar after he dumped her, right before savagely and mercilessly beating him against a glass window in public.
• Destructive Romance: Lola's short-lived relationship with Oscar consists largely of Lola abusing, assaulting, and belittling Oscar, while he passively accepts this blatant mistreatment.
• Disproportionate Retribution: Oscar dumps Lola. Lola brutally beats him against a glass window in plain view of dozens of people, who laugh as he suffers. She then strikes an alliance with Don Lino and tells him Oscar loves Angie so he’ll take her hostage.
• Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: She viciously beats up Oscar after he dumps her in plain view of 20 or 30 other fish, but nobody tries to stop her. Sykes even jokingly calls this "young love."
• Entitled Bitch: This is why she was infuriated over her breakup with Oscar: she wants his fame and fortune, and would not take it well if they completely split up for good.
• Entitled to Have You: When she discovers Oscar is rich and she starts dating him, she ends up getting angry and beating him up when Oscar dumps her. So basically, she felt that she should have been the only one Oscar should be dating.
• Establishing Character Moment: She appears to the song "Gold Digger" and flirts with Oscar after he places his bet, but leaves and calls him a nobody after learning he isn't rich.
• Even Evil Has Standards: Lola teams up with the sharks to have Angie kidnapped and potentially killed, but she's taken aback when Oscar pulls a Shoot the Hostage move by having Lenny "eat" Angie, likely not anticipating Oscar actually being willing to "kill" one of his loved ones.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Oscar dumped her becaused he truly has feelings for Angie, causing her to become very upset at him, albeit pettily (since she herself is also superficial).
• Evil Counterpart: To Angie. Both ladies have been interested in Oscar in one way or another, which further escalates when he became a false "Sharkslayer" to the public. While Angie has always saw Oscar as a "somebody", Lola only views him as a "nobody" at first. In addition, whereas Angie does love Oscar for his potential worth despite his arrogance, Lola only shows her liking for him through his increased wealth.
• Evil Is Petty: When Oscar dumps her, she gets revenge on him by teaming up with the shark Mafia and telling them that Oscar loves Angie so that they’ll take her hostage.
• Evil Redhead: Possesses red "hair" and has been nothing but an entitled Gold Digger towards Oscar. This takes up the ante once she joins Don Lino's shark mafia to enact her petty revenge against Oscar.
• Evil Sounds Deep: She's a vicious Femme Fatale with the deep voice of Angelina Jolie.
• Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: Wears an unnecessarily heavy amount of purple eyeshadow at all times.
• Expy: She looks like a fish version of Jessica Rabbit but without her good qualities.
• Extreme Melee Revenge: After getting dumped, she beats Oscar by repeatedly slamming him against a glass window with full force. Judging by his pained expression and how he slides down to the floor with his face covered in his own spit, coupled with the loud thudding of his face against the glass, it was certainly brutal.
• Fair-Weather Ex: Lola rejects Oscar when he’s poor, but becomes his girlfriend when he becomes rich and famous. At the end of the movie when he's partnered with Sykes, made the Whale Wash more successful than it's ever been, and become the beloved and respected fish he's always wanted to be, she tries to get back with him now that he's legitimately successful.
• Fat and Skinny: The Skinny to Don Lino's Fat.
• Femme Fatale: Seduces Oscar for her to mooch off his fame and fortune as a "Sharkslayer".
• Fiery Redhead: After Oscar dumps her for good, her vicious side starts to show up more often than before.
• Foil: To Angie. Both want Oscar's affections and end up forcefully kissing him in public. However, Angie has known Oscar for some time and cares about him for his character, whereas Lola seduced him immediately after the two met and is only interested in his wealth and fame.
• Forceful Kiss: After Oscar's staged fight with Lenny, Lola sneaks up on Oscar in front of the cameras and sweeps him into a passionate make-out session for the whole town to see. Oscar seems surprised by this at first but then seems to accept and return the kiss. Lola keeps him pinned under her and maintains complete control of the kiss, which reflects her domineering and abusive nature.
• From Nobody to Nightmare: After Oscar dumped her, she became more considerably hostile towards him, to the point where she joined Don Lino's Mafia to further enact her petty vengeance against him. Ironic, since she's not into those whom she deems as "nobodies".'
• Gold Digger: Bonus points for the song that plays when she first appears.
• Greed: She’s a greedy, heartless gold digger. She outright claims that next to revenge, money is the thing she loves most in the world.
• Green-Eyed Monster: When Oscar finally dumps her for Angie, she got extremely infuriated by it. Bonus points for having literal green eyes.
• Hair Flip: After she is done beating up Oscar for dumping her she runs a fin through her "hair" before sulking away.
• Hair-Trigger Temper: Once Oscar dumped her, she reacted to that violently.
• Hate Sink: While Don Lino serves as the main antagonist, he has a genuinely sympathetic motivation for targeting Oscar. Lola on the other hand is nothing more than a shallow, greedy, and abusive Gold Digger who doesn’t care about anyone but herself. She seduces Oscar as soon as he gains his fame and fortune as the Sharkslayer and constantly manipulates him while indiscreetly badmouthing Angie. After Oscar comes to his senses and decides to end the relationship, Lola mercilessly beats him, and then advises the sharks to kidnap and threaten to kill Angie, just to spite Oscar even more.
• Hoist Hero over Head: Does this to Oscar during her violent beating of him after he dumps her.
• Human Hammer-Throw: Does this to Oscar against a glass window during his beating at her hands.
• Hypocrite: She looks down on "nobodies" because they think they're worthless, yet this same lady started off as an ordinary fish who hasn't even been that big to the public in the first place.
• If I Can't Have You…: When Oscar dumps her, clearly over his feelings for Angie, Lola has the latter kidnapped and almost killed to prevent her and Oscar from being together.
• Informed Species: Due to the animation clearly trying to make her look like Angelina Jolie, she looks nothing like an actual lionfish and more like a fish that was plastered with Angelina Jolie's face.
• Ink-Suit Actor: She strikingly resembles Angelina Jolie herself.
• Jerkass: Lola is revealed to be this in the climax of the film after she gets dumped by Oscar and has Angie kidnapped for revenge. In addition, immediately after being dumped, she cruelly beats Oscar.
• Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: She's initially presented as a self-interested Gold Digger, but one who's neutral and nowhere near as bad as the sharks. However, after Oscar dumps her, it quickly becomes apparent how evil she truly is when she viciously beats him for doing so and then teams up with the sharks to have Angie kidnapped and nearly murdered.
• Karmic Rape: Implied. In the post-credits scene, Lola comes to the penthouse to insincerely make amends with Oscar. She's instead met by Crazy Joe who amorously turns off the lights when she says "You'd have to be crazy not to take me back". Since it is a kids movie and Crazy Joe is a Nice Guy, he obviously didn't rape her but it's strongly indicated that he’ll become an Abhorrent Admirer to her and his advances are portrayed as karma for joining the sharks to get revenge for Oscar dumping her.
• Kick the Dog: As part of her Establishing Character Moment, she loses all interest in Oscar after learning he isn't rich, admits to him that she’s really superficial, and calls him a nobody before ditching him.
  Lola: Look, deep down, I'm really superficial. (pulls Oscar close as if to kiss him) And don't get me wrong, you're cute, but...(whispers as she pushes him away) you're a nobody.
• Kiss Diss: In her first meeting with Oscar, after discovering he isn't actually rich, she continues to flirt with him briefly and pulls him in close to her as if she is going to kiss him, with Oscar even closing his eyes and puckering up in anticipation. But then right as their lips are inches apart, she whispers to him that he's a nobody before pushing him away.
• Lack of Empathy: She shows no true affinity for anyone, not even Oscar, whom she only exploited for his fame as a "Sharkslayer".
• Lady in Red: Lola has red "hair", a red "dress", and red lipstick.
• Lean and Mean: A slim fish with a big ego.
• Makeup Is Evil: Wears the heaviest makeup of any character in the film by far, and is also the meanest character in the movie.
• Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Lola has no problems taking on the traditional male role in a romantic relationship; in fact she seems to prefer it. Whenever, she sees Oscar, she takes control, with her actively seeking him out. When she meets up with Oscar at his penthouse, she spins him around as they're swimming and she slams him against his lava lamp later on to seduce and convince him to not retire as the sharkslayer, displaying her superior strength over him. After Oscar does complete a fake sharkslayer stunt, Lola swims up to him as she spins Oscar and pins him down with her on top as she has a public make-out session with him, but with her being the top in the relationship and Oscar being the bottom. Finally, when Oscar decides to break up with her, Lola decides to beat him up in public viewing of the other fish, as she commits domestic violence despite her being a female fish and Oscar a male fish.
• More Despicable Minion: Despite working for Don Lino come the sitdown, her reasons for revenge on Oscar are more petty than the shark boss’. Oscar rejected her, whereas Lino thinks he's responsible for Frankie's death, and later Lenny's. Yes, Lola somehow makes the Mafia look more sympathetic by comparison.
• Ms. Fanservice: As much as a humanoid fish can be made to look "sexy", anyways. She has a pronounced hourglass figure suggesting a prominent chest and hips, long red hair, prominent makeup, and a sultry, seductive voice provided by Angelina Jolie.
• Narcissist: She's a Gold Digger who even shamelessly admits that she's superficial. When things don't go her way, she'll be supremely upset.
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain!: Questioning to Oscar about his feelings for Angie resulted in the downfall of their tumultuous relationship, as it made him break up with Lola for good. Even if that resulted in Lola herself becoming vindictive to Oscar, it still backfired because he has since given up his fame for the sake of Angie, leaving Lola's vengeful plans against him in vain.
• No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Delivers a particularly brutal one to Oscar after he dumps her.
• No Sense of Personal Space: She has a tendency to get far too close to Oscar, even when he is clearly uncomfortable. Examples include when she roughly slams him against a giant lava lamp and caresses his body and face while her face is uncomfortably close to his, forcefully grabs and kisses him in public, and wraps one arm around him and pushes his face closer to hers with the other hand while he is clearly upset and uninterested.
• Not Good with Rejection: After Oscar breaks up with her as gently as he can, she responds by giving him a frightening Death Glare, savagely slamming him against a glass window repeatedly in front of dozens of people, and ratting him and Angie out to the sharks.
• Opportunistic Bitch: She exploited Oscar's fame for the sake of his fortune alone.
• Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: After Oscar breaks up with her, she shoots him a frightening Death Glare before growling "Let me explain something to you!" with her voice dripping in Tranquil Fury before charging at him and mercilessly slamming him repeatedly against the glass window.
• Psychopathic Womanchild: How she reacted to Oscar's will to break up with her? Ruthlessly attacking him nearby a window as if she's a 4-year-old Spoiled Brat. This is even amped up to 11 when she temporarily joins Don Lino's mafia to further enact her revenge on Oscar by kidnapping Angie.
• Red Is Violent: Lola's primary color is red and she gets aggressive towards Oscar.
• Revenge: The only thing she loves more than money. After Oscar dumps her, she gets her immediate revenge by beating and humiliating him. Not satisfied with that, she then teams up with the sharks and tells them he’s in love with Angie so they’ll kidnap her.
• Rich Bitch: Lola considers fish that are poor to be nobodies. When one "nobody" she belittled and disrespected suddenly becomes a "somebody", she feels entitled to have him.
• Sexual Karma: Implied by the mid-credits scene, where she comes back to Oscar's penthouse hoping to seduce him again, only to run into Crazy Joe.
• Shadow Archetype: She's a perfect representation of what could happen to Angie if she ever lets her obsession over Oscar get the better of her.
• "Shut Up" Kiss: When she sneaks up on Oscar after his staged fight with Lenny, after she briefly spins him around, Oscar notices her and starts to happily greet her as she pins him underneath her, only for her to cut him off by pressing her lips against his, locking him into a deep kiss.
• Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: She has red "hair" and green eyes, and was exploiting Oscar for his fame alone.
• Small Name, Big Ego: She looks down upon "nobodies" just because she thinks they're worthless. In reality, she's one of them.
• Smooch of Victory: After Oscar's staged battle with Lenny, Lola decides to "reward" him by sneaking up on him, pinning him under her, and forcefully making out with him in front of thousands of onlookers. He seems to enjoy and accept her reward after his initial reaction of shock and surprise.
• Soft-Spoken Sadist: Lola never raises her voice, and is later shown to be more than willing to resort to violence and indirect murder to get back at those she feels wronged by.
• Spectacular Spinning: She is fond of spinning Oscar around while being seductive. She uses one hand on his hand to give him a quick spin when they reunite at Oscar's penthouse, and she does it again immediately before grabbing and making-out with him. She also spins herself while dancing for Oscar the first time they meet, and spins herself and Oscar while beating him up after being dumped.
• Stealth Pun: She's a lionfish, a species of fish known for its venomous spines, who is also an abusive love interest to Oscar. She and Oscar are in a toxic relationship.
• Tomboy and Girly Girl: Has an odd version of this where she's the Tomboy to Angie's Girly Girl. While Angie works at a carwash and Lola is a seductive Femme Fatale, Angie is non-confrontational and reserved while Lola is aggressive and confident.
• Token Evil Teammate: She only joined Don Lino's mafia for the petty reason of being understandably dumped by Oscar. Not even Frankie was as vile as her.
• The Vamp: Lola uses her beauty and provocative actions (dancing, touching, making out) to seduce Oscar.
• Waif-Fu: Despite her small size and slim figure, Lola is shown to be physically strong enough to pick up Oscar even though half of her entire body is a flimsy tail fin shaped like a dress, and effortlessly delivers a vicious beatdown on him after he breaks up with her.
• Wall Pin of Love: When Oscar considers retiering from being the Sharkslayer, Lola immediately slams him against his giant lava lamp, telling him he doesn't want to do that. She keeps him pinned there and speaks softly to him, convincing him he's worked too hard for all this to just give it up, and tells him he just needs to show the sharks who's boss so they'll leave him alone. Oscar says she's right and is inspired to do just that with Lenny before swimming away. Though Lola's true reason for doing this is because Oscar wouldn't be good for a relationship if he isn't rich and famous, she is seen with a satisfied smile as she watches him leave.
• Woman Scorned: Oscar inadvertedly sets the third act in motion when he tries to break up with Lola. After an already extreme reaction in the moment - during which she mercilessly beat him against the glass window in front of Sykes and dozens of other partygoers - she then arranges to have Angie kidnapped by the sharks, fully intending to have her murdered, in order to get back at Oscar.

Crazy Joe

Voiced By: David P. Smith

A homeless hermit crab who's good friends with Oscar.

• Abhorrent Admirer: He attempts to put the moves on Lola in The Stinger, and while we don't see her reaction, since she was looking for... someone else, it's safe to say he's not her type.
• Ascended Extra: The video game does much more with him than the movie does, upgrading him from a side character to basically The Mentor.
• Insult Backfire: When the Shorties tag his shell with graffiti, he compliments their work and says they should do it for a living.
• Loon with a Heart of Gold: He's a Nice Guy despite being... well, crazy.
• Mentor Archetype: He teaches Oscar his moves throughout the video game.

Earl

Oscar’s dad, Earl, who worked as a tongue scrubber in the whale wash for his whole life.

• Deceased Parents Are the Best: Earl is all but stated to have passed away before the events of the film, but Oscar and Angie still fondly remember him.
• Good Parents: While we never see them interact directly, Earl is implied to have been a very loving father that a younger Oscar used to look up to. Even as an adult, Oscar still believes Earl was the best parent he could have asked for.
• Non-Mammalian Hair: While the other fish characters in the film have their natural features shaped to resemble hair, Earl inexplicably has an actual afro in his younger years, and also grows facial hair as an older man.
• Posthumous Character: Is implied to have passed away by the time of the movie, and only appears in a brief, silent flashback.
• Strong Family Resemblance: Looks a whole lot like his son.
• The Voiceless: Has no dialogue in any of his scenes.

• The Dog Bites Back: When he sees Lino stuck, he doesn't miss the opportunity to take revenge on him by setting his children on him.
