The Summit Memory Project

The Wingfoot Clan Newsletters were published by the Goodyear Company in Akron for their employees and are available through www.SummitMemory.org. They contain information about scientific and manufacturing advances as well as the social news of the day. The Wingfoot Clan – Aircraft Edition (1941-1945) and the Wingfoot Clan – Akron Edition (1939-1946) can be browsed or searched. These collections are contributed by Archival Services, University Libraries, University of Akron, our newest partner.

The Rubber Division, ACS Oral History Series includes interviews with scientists, engineers, publishers, and executives from both industry and academia who have made significant contributions to rubber science and technology.  This collection was contributed to www.SummitMemory.org by our newest partner, the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society.

The Online Map Room in www.SummitMemory.org contains searchable historical maps and atlases of Akron and Summit County Ohio. This collection is the first collaboration with our newest partner, University Libraries, University of Akron.

The Alumni Association of Akron City Hospital School of Nursing has joined the Summit Memory Project. The Association contributed a collection of images from the beginnings of the hospital and school in the late 19th century.

The Alumni Association was established in 1905, a short 10 years after the first two nurses graduated the nursing program of the then City Hospital of Akron.  It was established to care for the nurses when ill, to raise the standards of the school, and promote fellowship between the members.  Although the Akron City Hospital Idabelle Firestone School of Nursing (renamed in 1975) closed its doors in 1989, the Alumni Association continues to promote and provide opportunities for nursing education and professional advancement. The Historical Committee of the Alumni Association maintains a small museum in the Nurses Home at 41 Arch Street, Akron OH.

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens,  Akron’s only National Historic Landmark and Save America’s Treasures project, has joined Summit Memory.  They have contributed Early Akron from Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens which contains more than 20 images captured by Willard Penfield Seiberling (1892-1981) during the early 20th century.

Summit Memory welcomes our newest partner, The Archives of the History of American Psychology (AHAP) at the University of Akron.   The David P. Campbell Postcard Collection was contributed by AHAP.  This collection contains more than 500 postcards from around Ohio and beyond.

Summit Memory adds a collection focused on Akron during the Summer of 1968.  The Times They Were A-Changin’: Akron Remembers 1968 contains images and audio excerpts recalling this pivotal year.  The excerpts were taken from oral history interviews collected as part of a collaborative project of the Akron-Summit County Public Library and Dr. Gregory Wilson and students enrolled in his Fall 2008 course on public history at the University of Akron. 

This collection is the first contributed by our newest partner, the Akron Beacon Journal.  Founded in 1839, the Akron Beacon Journal is a four-time Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper that serves readers in Summit, Medina, Portage, Stark and Wayne counties.   Joining the Summit Memory Project is just one part of the the newspaper’s on-going support of events and programs that enrich the lives of its readers.
