LURKING I: retro-styled classic fantasy computer role-playing experience

  • Classless character creation with modifiable skills.
  • Build a party of up to five characters.
  • Open world to be explored with nonlinear story progression.
  • Hundreds of weapons, armor, and special items.
  • Dozens of magical spells and songs.
  • A fantasy role playing experience reminiscent of Ultima III, Wizardy, and The Bard’s Tale.

PLOT : A mysterious figure has resurrected three ancient kings of realms from their long, cold slumbers within their barrows. The barrow wights have taken up residence in the ruins of their former keeps and unleashed legions of undead to wreck havoc upon the lands. The denizens of the land have also become emboldened by the growing shadow of evil and despair. In desperation, the Lord Deciper has issued forth a calling for heroes to come to the aid of the people, and to find a way to thrust back the growing darkness and return the barrow wights to their slumbers.

  1. Oh, and as much as I enjoy having conversations with myself…(It makes me feel better)… please feel free to chime in at any time. I have been frustrated with the lack of communication since the release of Lurking other than the comments I find on other sites (which btw we took very seriously and tried to make appropriate changes). 🙂

  2. I have seen some comments out there about what ATTRIBUTES do… I had to go back through the code and check. Here is what I found:

STRENGTH:* BONUS TO HIT DAMAGE IN BATTLE
    *-DETERMINE MAX EQUIPMENT BURDEN ($)
    INTELLECT & WISDOM:
    THESE WORK IN TANDEM TO:
    * DECREASE DAMAGE FROM FAILED SPELL ‘COUNTERSPELL’ (Wisdom Only)
    * INCREASES CHANCE OF SPELL SUCCESS (Equal Parts)
    * RESIST MONSTER MAGIC ATTACKS (1 part Wisdom + 4 parts Int)
AGILITY: * BONUS TO CHANCE OF EVADING ENEMY HIT
VITALITY: * DETERMINES INCREASE IN HEALTH MAX ON LEVEL UP
($) All items have a weight but this was never implemented.

  3. We never did get many comments about game play other then from a small group of people. I actually took a short break from L2 and implemented diagonal movement and attack for characters and monsters and upgraded the music from .midi to .mp3. I have not posted the update yet because these changes aren’t fully tested yet. If anyone has a suggestion about (simple) improvements that could be made including impact of attributes or game play balance we would love to hear them. Otherwise, we just continue to work on L2. 🙂

  4. Started playing it and liking it very much so far, however I have a question – what exactly do attributes do? Skills are rather self-explanatory, but attributes aren’t, and you’re never sure whether you’ve picked the right scores on chargen.

  5. As you may have noticed, I have recently released a slow string of minor updates/patches. These have mainly been to make a few small cosmetic changes and fix some bugs that came to light. Most recently, v.1.3.0 corrected a glitch that caused two stationary NPCs to occupy the same tile and make it impossible to talk to one of them who has some key information. I have been actually been working on the game in between sessions of work on L2. I have been doing some major cosmetic changes on the GI and other tweaks. Also, I have been adding a map function that I just began implementing in L2. I would love to revisit combat and other mechanics too but the L1 code is not unlike a game of Jenga two hours in – changes to sensitive areas create the risk of a nasty collapse. Still, I am slowly working toward polish that should have been present from the start. A release with major changes in not out of the question in the future. We will see.

  6. Hello,
I am getting a lot of errors running this, any advice?
When I create an adventurer and start a new quest, when I get to the point where the into is over (in the king’s throne room I think), I get the following error and it crashes to desktop:

    Run time error 9
    Subscript out of range

    1. I see that error handling was turned off in the last build. The following link is to a new build with error handling turned on. This will bypass the error so the game does not crash. The error may or may not impact game play but chances are it will not. This link is for a new executable only and should go into the game folder in the same location as the current executable.
I would still like to know what caused this crash so if you have a moment please zip up a copy of your data file and email it to me at oklab.software@gmail.com. Please let me know how you make out. Thank you!

Lurking v1.4.2 link to executable only (not a complete game package):

  7. Been working on a new update to L1. I have made the display larger (1280 x 720). Seems to be working fine but had to reorganize the display layout so working on some graphics to complete that. Also trying to improve the combat so not sure when I will be able to push it. Maybe I will update with the display change first and then work on the combat.
