About the Developer

Bio

Name / Studio Name

Martin Cremerius-Gauer / 2nd Law Games

Location

Duisburg, Germany

How It Started

It started as an idea to build a playable portfolio for my personal website – and that’s when I discovered GB Studio. From there, I was hooked.

Other Games / Projects

Self Simulated is my first “real” video game. Since then, I’ve started work on Fuse Dash, an arcade-style action platformer for the Game Boy Color that’s still in development. I’ve also helped with level design and QA testing for other indie devs' projects along the way.

Fun Fact

Self Simulated was made while camping across Europe – Italy, Norway, Denmark, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands. I worked entirely on my laptop while on the road. Oh, and my wife designed two of the levels!

The Idea

Why I Made This Game

Making a video game has always been a dream of mine. After watching Game Maker’s Toolkit’s video “Why Does Celeste Feel So Good to Play?”, I wanted to try building a platformer that felt just as smooth and satisfying – on the Game Boy Color, no less.

What Makes This Game Special

Just the fact that it exists! When I look back at the time, effort, and learning that went into Self Simulated, it honestly feels like a miracle. Like – I made a video game! That’s freaking awesome.

You'll Love This If...

You enjoy tight, responsive platformers – especially if you like mastering precise controls.

Inspiration / Influences

My aim was to create something that feels like a mix between Celeste and Katana Zero – but on the GBC.

Favorite Feature

Definitely the assist settings. They let players tweak the game’s difficulty to match their play style, which makes it more accessible without compromising the core experience.

    Self Simulated Slays!!!!

Amazing platformer that I couldn’t put down! Once started this game sucks you right into a creative & immersive story and super responsive crisp gameplay! The level progression is linear and super engaging with a story and gameplay that can be played for hours straight or picked up for a few spare mins here and there! Amazing game!

    Excellent Modern Fun Arcade Platformer

Solid gameplay with refined controls. I loved the creativity all over the DNA in this game. As you go through the levels, you feel the difficulty and fun compound. Lots of things to discover, and hidden secrets which makes coming back to this a solid experience.

I beat the game once so far and I was dipping in and out with short sessions. I love that you don't need to play it all in one sitting and can pick it up anytime to continue. This was my most anticipated game to try out as I received my Chromatic and can't wait to discover more as I play through it more times. Highly recommend and easy to understand the mechanics.
