You made some really amazing artwork for this scrat simulator. I kept dying after a few pages but had fun sliding the squirrel to get his nuts lol.

Bluster's itch.io pageHow does your game represent "Slick"?
This is a retro rage platformer with howling winter wind. Every surface in this surreal forest is slippery.

I was able to beat this at level 6. The ability to dial in the strength of the wind is pretty nice, really lets you pick your difficulty level (5 and below proved to be too challenging for me). It is fun to let the wind carry you and it’s also nice that holding the spacebar allows you to immediately jump upon landing.
REALLY good for a first jam game!
However i do feel like the music gets annoying really fast and the game is impossible to play with keyboard on the highest level
Thank you so much.
Sorry about the stage music getting annoying.. hehe.. I need to put volume controls specific to the parts of the game, for sure. I liked that song because some of the bell sounds reminded me of winter, for some reason, and the overall tone seemed pretty light. In terms of finishing, definitely sprinting/dashing a lot can improve the jump distance by quite a bit. There are a few other tricks that players have found, as well ... ; )
I think I almost made it to the end by just letting the wind carry me at level 10 lol. It also caught me off guard when the wind blew me towards the left lol. Unfortunately, I admittedly couldn't make it to the end no matter how I tried. Definitely more of a skill issue on my side than anything else though.
I'm usually not one for rage games, but I do think this game is very interesting as one. I love how the level had multiple paths, allowing me to either try different paths or combine them in unintentional ways when the wind allows you to jump higher lol.
I also think the obstacles in the level were paced pretty well i.e going from simple and straightforward platforms to more narrower and smaller platforms which required a little more precision. I also love that the acorns were placed in some pretty dastardly places. Honestly speaking, I have no real issues with this game, since it succeeds pretty well at being a rage game ( even though I was laughing more than I was getting angry ).
Good stuff for your first game jam
Thank you for giving me such a detailed response.
It's certainly easier to get to the end of the level on higher intensity levels, but score relies on getting acorns, which seems pretty hard. =) You're right that it's more funny.. and just fun.. to be like a flying squirrel in the storm. I think of rage games as being frustrating in a funny way, like that, and it seemed like a good goal for the jam. It is not my long-term vision for the game, but perhaps it could remain as a play mode?
Respect to the assist controls and I love the credits screen honestly. Would love to see a speedrun of this❣
Played only on storm level 6. I started having a lot more fun when I stopped caring too much about score. Hopping over all the obstacles with the wind is a good time, especially over sitting in place for a little while. Losing all your acorns is rather brutal, especially considering how long it takes to build up a collection. I like all of the movement mechanics. Overall, I think this was a solid first game, so nice work!
Thank you for such a positive response..
The higher wind levels are definitely more fun, which is why I kind of wish I'd set the default level higher. I had the thought that someone may want to learn the controls first.. but perhaps I could have ramped it up after a spell?
I do plan to further develop the game, and I definitely won't take away all of the acorns after a single fall. That's just what I could do within the scope of the jam, to make it replayable. I'm sure someone out there would accept the challenge of trying to get the highest score possible!
great first itch project, you really brought the game to life with the amount of care in the wind physics. really hard and meticulous if you want to collect all the acorns, but i suppose that's how woodland creatures must feel!
Rue❄️Brie already knows how I feel about how rage inducing this game is because it punishes you consistently but by god does it feel nice when you finally get it right. It was nice to hear from the dev about the issues they came across and how they solved them, they have a solid understanding of programming so I didn't have much to complain about there, mainly just wish I could store my nuts so I didn't lose them... every... freakin'... time.
A platformer with difficulty settings? Don't see those in jams too much, kudos for adding them!
For someone who isn't a fan of platformers (simply because I suck at them lol), I gotta say your entry was pretty good!
The characters are cute, the artstyle looks great and the soundtrack fits the whole concept of "oh boy, I gotta go back home before I freeze, yikes" :D
A nice and original game :)
Phew! Finally beat the game when I lowered the storm down to a 5! It felt good hitting those tricky jumps. The art and playable characters are very charming, and I was pleased to finally get the racoon (not trash panda!) back home. Also, after being in chat together, I realised the voice of the racoon and squirrel sounded familiar, were those your puppy's bark? XD
It did feel frustrating fighting the storm in such a way that I could see my guy being blown towards spikes, but the movement to go forward just wasn't enough to save it, like there was just no way to save my run.
Although when I did succeed, the failures before just made it the sweeter.
My end score was 936.
It’s kinda a rage game, but because of that I felt compelled to finish it. It’s slow at the start, but once you pick up the wind in your sails, it’s super fun. It could use some coyote time, a reset button, and a progress bar of some sort, but other than that, GREAT game! My high score is 831.
Cute sprites, the snowstorm was a nice touch, the ice was so slippery that I had to be really careful of how I platformed. Good job :)
I really liked the level and sound design. The snow also was very immersive. I think a background/skybox would have contributed a lot. I think the character could move faster as well.

I've definitely been inspired to power up the movement while advancing in level.
