As others have said, the “quick thinking” mechanic when the cards fly is genius. This should be a full-fledged game. Amazing work!

Fistful of Face Cards's itch.io pageHow does your game represent "Slick"?
Bandits have infested the outpost. You're a slick card-slinger in the wild wild west, out to make things right. Your horse: he's fast. Your gun: he's faster.
Hoon around the gulch drifting through the sands, before dueling enemies in a one on one high-noon sharp-shootin' showdown. Draw your weapon, fling your cards, trickshot them to play them.

This is really great! I love how you only have a few moments to make decisions about what cards to play and in what order. It's really satisfying to discover how to use your cards. For instance, you learn that it's generally better to play horseshoes first, which is pretty simple, but with more cards I can see that little discovery process happening over and over in a way that could be really fun and satisfying.
Having an actual space to navigate between combat is an interesting idea. I think it would be really cool to couple the card game with the navigation somehow. Currently they seem pretty starkly separated such that I'm not sure if the horse navigation is actually adding much to the game, but it would be cool if they somehow tied into each other.
I think you guys should keep up with this one because it's really fun, unique, and interesting. Well done!
Rattlesnake Jake might be my new favorite video game character, we've become like brothers in this lonely desert lmao.
Every other comment is right on the money, this game is so good it has the potential to be something big!! It's reminds me of Inscryption in the best way possible. I love this mixture of wild west theming and strategy card game. The tree pathing really gives it that solid layer of replayability, making the journey different every time, and I love the resource management that's sprinkled in; each time I ride across the valley I have to ask myself "what consequences will I face if I choose going to spot A instead of spot B", it also allows the player to tailor their gaming experience to fit them, which is a hard thing for a developer to do when mapping out the trees but so satisfying to see in action.
Right now I got beef with Gattle Rattle over there, he's had it too good for too long and this game ain't big enough for the two of us. Definitely put me on the waitlist if you ever expand on this, I'll be first in line to play it!! You've done a mighty fine job partner 🤠✨
Oh man this is awesome! The primary shooting mechanic is so satisfying and combining it with a deckbuilder is a stroke of genius. I managed to clear all the way to the end, but the bandits didn’t make it easy for me! Excellent work!
This was a really fun game to play in the jam. Hope that you make more of the game once the jam is over!
I love it.
For me, it is the most enjoyable game of the jam.
This could be such a cool game if fleshed out.
I even tried messing around with the game by jumping off the edge, but you even thought about that, haha!
This is the most original card game I've played in a while! I love the hub world where you travel from bandit to bandit, it's a really nice touch that gives the game a great sense of adventure. The card game itself is also unique but very intuitive! I can definitely see how you could expand on this game by adding new cards and bandits. You could also add more types of markers on the map as well like a saloon or gold mine! Thank you for submitting I had a lot of fun with this one!
Fun game, loved the Rango reference! Would really like to see this expanded into a full-fledged game :)
Damn, Quiet Quinn got hands
Would you kindly remind me when there's a full version out? Because this game is the bomb!
I love the mechanic where you need to shoot the card in order to use it. You really need to think and click quick
It's easily one of the best entries this year, though I'm kind of a sucker for deckbuilder-roguelikes
Excellent job!
Ahhh! So close to defeating the gattle snake. We killed each other on the same hand, but he won. Very cool jam game! I liked the sounds, the horse and rider, and the art a lot, great home made game jam jank! The gameplay hook is really interesting to me: Slay the Spire, but you only have a few seconds to see your hand and sequence your cards. I also think the card sequencing is interesting... I think this could work possibly as a two player duel card game, maybe taking turns leading / following? In any case great work! It would be neat to polish this further.
Interesting card shooting gimmick, I really liked it when the enemy cards went face down, and you had to try and memorize/predict their order.
this was a great time lmao. i love hooning around 🦘
i'll be giving you guys a follow! if you take it further i'm sure it'll be super awesome. >:3
I love love love this game! The controls are a little rough, but I am truly impressed that you essentially wrote a full roguelike in the span of the jam. Drawing and shooting the cards is on-point, in terms of flavour, and it is also one of the coolest mechanics I've seen in a while. Dgee-raw!
(p.s. I have won the west. ; ) )
Very slick combat. Love that you have to shoot the cards and plan your turn in a very short amount of time. Flips the usual card battler trope of plan everything on its head!
Very well designed card game! I like how the order we play the cards matter and we had to shoot the cards so some pre-planning + reflexes are needed to optimize. I had fun playing this. There are a few things I wish were there: more enemy types, most of the game seems to just be the most basic enemy which starts to get boring quickly. I want the opportunity for more unique cards and more powerful enemies (though, I couldn't really figure out what the bloody horseshoe/luck does). And I wish the different paths were more visually obvious in the game, like actual crossroads we have to take. Overall, I think this was a neatly designed game that could be expanded more upon!
What a cool idea and concept! I like the idea a lot and I feel with some polish this could absolutely be a fun game! I felt it did get a teeny bit tedious but that is to be expected with the limited time. Excellent work!
Really makes you feel like a cowboy shooting cards.
Great concept loop, super original take on the prompt and the horse riding through the roguelike map is very unique

I love how some random enemy is named " Rattlesnake Jake " but the actual snake boss which is basically Jake from Rango is named something else.

As someone who's not that into card games, I have to say that this was an extremely interesting take on a deckbuilder. Atleast as far as I know, I've never seen anything like this. I love how the game really requires quick thinking and improvisation. I know most deckbuilders also require that sort of thing, but the added element of needing to shoot cards as fast as you can definitely adds another layer of strategy here.
I also love how the order in which you shoot the cards matters.
i.e If you're shooting a blue card, you really need to shoot it either first or maybe in between, whereas there wouldn't really any point to shooting it last.
One major issue I had was that I didn't really need to change my strategy much when it came to the various encounters. I usually always shot the blue armour cards first and then went for damage, only occasionally going for health if required. I'm also not entirely sure if this was intended, but there were a number of times where some cards effectively spawned on top of other cards, almost to the point that I couldn't really shoot them
The horse section definitely seemed and felt unfinished, but I'll let that be since it seems more like a product of overscoping than anything else. Though I wasn't exactly sure what the tumbleweeds were doing since they didn't seem to take from my health.
All that said, I'd say y'all definitely made something cool here. Great work and kudos to the whole team.
I'm a big Rango and Rattle Snake Jake fan, and mentioned to my team mates that I'd love to add a rattle snake card (which we didn't have time for), and then the next day one of my team mates gave the jankiest character we had the name of Rattle Snake Jake XD
You're very right about not having to change tactics all that much, we started adding ways to prevent that, i.e. the Snake in my Boot card sets the enemy's block/luck to 0, and the bloody horse shoe doing damage based on how much luck/block the player that shoots it have, in Quiet Quin and Dead Arm Dick deck's, but I in this version I almost always use the same strategy, we're for sure going to change that.
The cards overlapping was something that we saw very early in the jam, but seemed like a low priority issue, given that there was so much core functionality to add, but its definitely something we need to address (whether we should fix it, or provide power ups that stop it from happening).
The tumble weeds, haha yes, we've gotten a number of comments about those, they do nothing. Initially we said that if you shoot them you should earn money, but then decided that that doesn't make sense, then said they should damage you, but then decided that that would be annoying, then the idea was floated that they should put another dud tumbleweed card into your deck if it hits you, but by then we had run out of time.
The horse riding was also meant to be much larger, but as all game jams go, we ran out of time.
Thanks for playing our game
Damn tumbleweeds. Really slick and horse is cute ^-^ Having to shoot the cards you want to play is such a fun idea and encourages some quick thinking. Hope you continue this after the jam, would love to see where it goes !!
