Hey there, congrats on the new game. I have placed it in January's best homebrew games video here:

Thanks, I enjoy your channel and as a long time subscriber it was a nice surprise to see it pop up!

My absolute pleasure, thanks

Vampire standalone coffin os runs the screen scrambled. I have other ways of playing so this is only a minor inconvenience.

Issue with Vampire AGA compatibility I'm afraid, there's nothing I can do my end as I don't have a Vampire to test why it is misbehaving. I'm using 64 bit wide fetches for both bitplanes and sprites so maxing out the bandwidth. Out of interest, does the ECS version run ok on the Vampire?

Ecs does not even boot on coffin os vampire standalone.

Weird, does it give a memory message or just silently fail? (I would have thought the Vampire has plenty of Chip and Fast).

Just a black screen which you cannot get out of.

Also, the whdload does not run on a500mini. Aga and ECS, they don't work.

any idea how to covert the ecs lha file into a iso so that cd32 can run it. I have tried and failed many times 😐

Do you have fast mem on your CD32? If so I assume to you just need to burn a cd image with the correct files on. Not sure what make a CD32 disk bootable though.

Sorry, you said ECS version so you shouldn't need fast mem. Just burn the files onto a cd although a quick Google suggest there is an extra step to make is bootable.

Yeah this is right / I tried a few times I believe I need to create an iso for it? I will try again. Thanks Dave

I've managed to create an ISO using this tool https://github.com/fuseoppl/isocd-win

It is now in the downloads section

That is wonderful news! Is it playable on CD32 pad also? Will check it out ASAP. Thanks!

Can you make a version with the original Kunio-kun sprites/levels? I am a big Kunio-kun fan but not a big Renegade fan, but since the first Renegade is basically just a slightly tweaked version of the first Kunio-kun, you can probably get both working in the same engine. The only major code difference would be the cutscenes that are in Kunio-kun but were removed from Renegade.

Same, i asked a few times before ; but got nothing back (T_T)

Its the same Game, yes, but assets where replaced and the Cutscenes between stages where removed :(

So a asset swap back to the original would  absolutely possible,

even if he cant recreate the cutscenes.

This game (and kunio) would deserve it, its the first of  its kind.

The father of the whole genre !

This game !!

and not butchered American version :(

I admire the work dave has done and i am really thankfull but i can not buy this game in the americanized form, sorry.

and no 2 button support mode ? why ?

(yes the OG has 3, but there is a 1 button option so why not 2 ?

1&2 together =3)

I dont know if he will ever do the asset swap, i guess not.

Maybe he doesnt know that he ported the butchered american version and left the legend and father of this genre in the dust.

Still, kudos to dave , i cant barely make a decent pong game myself... ;)

So respect for that !

Kunio kicks ass !

greetz

It's a lot of work to redo all the assets for Kunio-kun. Maybe I'll take a look at some point but not in the near future, sorry.

Thats ok, at least there is hope ; )

HUGE thanks for this Port , it´s still awesome !

(2 button support would be neat. 1=punch 2=kick 1&2=jump)

greetings & kudos

Hello, in my last issue of Retro News Flash, I covered the game Renegade (AGA) and ran a short report on it. It´s a really great game, I really liked it. All the best from Magisthan´s Spielekiste. 🙂

Hi Magisthan, really glad you enjoyed it. It was a labour of love because I know it isn't everyone's favourite. It gets compared to Double Dragon which everyone has more love for (probably including me) but I think it's a great game and you can learn how to beat it.

To be honest, I'm not really into action games; personally, I prefer other genres. But as part of my Retro News Flash, I want to cover and showcase all genres. And Renegade is, of course, a classic, and your implementation is really well done. Keep up the good work.

Amazing stuff! Question, can you basically use the 'engine' for other ports/ games when done?

Thanks, glad you're enjoying it. To be honest, not a lot of the engine is reusable. Some of the sprite/tile stuff can be but the game logic is quite specific to this title. I did learn a few concepts around how certain structures and collision works which is good knowledge to take forward at least.

Congrats on Amiga ECS version / I wondered if it’s possible to run this on a stock Amiga 1200 with 2mb chip ram?

Yes it should be able to, will package up an ECS, 2mb chip only version when I get a chance.

It does run now. I didn't update the version number so just redownload.

That’s great - thanks for your work! When I get chance I will download and send contribution :)

Why do you refuse to upload this to Aminet so that every AmigaOS user can enjoy it..?

It's an HDF file? I am talking about renegade v1.5  4.3 MB version

No, just an executable that can be run from workbench/AmigaDos. The Lha version can be mounted as a hardfile in winuae just use the archive option in the hard disk settings.

Thank you for your answer but i don't use Winuae, only FPGA so i would need an ADF file or an HDF one...

Perhaps i can use LHA file via AmigaVision, i will try it

It's simple enough to create an HDF so I will upload one when I get a chance

V1.6 now comes as an HDF

wonderful..! Is it possible to have a cd32 iso download option please? ;)

Boo, when I try to run it under emulation in Amiberry it crashes with a "DH0 is write-protected" error :(

Hmm, should work ok. I've tested it on PiMIGA 5 and it run fine. I've tested it with the Read/Write box checked and unchecked and it makes no difference.

Awesome!

Thanks for posting the video. Running punch is your friend against Big Bertha!

Fantastic port! Really enjoyed it. Thank you!

I'm wondering if Bertha's behaviour is 100% correct as I couldn't get her to charge at me. I tried in easy mode and both 60hz/50hz.

I used Win-UAE with 2mb/8mb.

At one point she froze, and another, she seemed to charge away from me.

Glad you're enjoying itm Will take a look at Bertha's behaviour.

Thanks for checking it. She's charging in v1.5, although I haven't got past her in 1.5 yet.

Running punch seems to be the best tactic, although that is harder to do now she is charging

Looking at videos of the arcade, it seems she charges at the player for longer, and more or less whenever she has the chance. You can fly kick her on the charge and knock her down, and that's the best way to beat her. That's what I did on the Spectrum version, too!
Currently that doesn't seem possible here, as she's just occasionally charging for a second or so and then breaking it off.

I've made some more fixes to the way she moves, hopefully it is now as expected. I tried to check it against the arcade as best I could

Excellent arcade game, I added it to the video of other Amiga games released in December.

Got this running on a pistorm amiga 1200. It works perfectly in AGS desktop mode. Emu68 came already mounted so I put Renegade in the shared folder and clicked on it and the game ran.

Will this be in amiga game selector 3.0?

They are welcome to include it

This is on Amiga Game Selector 3.0 if anyone wants to play.

Nice arcade conversion, but it doesn't actually improve the core gameplay. A true two-player (playing simultaneously) mode would have been a welcome addition. Our German-language review can be found at 03:52:38. English subtitles are also available. Subscribing to our YouTube and Twitch channels is welcome. 🙂

Thanks for reviewing. No plans for 2 player simultaneous mode I'm afraid. You were playing on the default settings which has the difficulty set to normal (arcade coin eating), if you change it to Easy in the options then it is a lot easier (even easier than the arcade with the dip switches set to easy)

Very good!!! Keep going!

Kunio-kun is starring in alot of Games; maybe some People did not know that.

https://kuniokun.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_games
There is even a whole Serie on TV about Kunio. He is Legendary.

Who is this generic Guy in "Renegade" ? XD

Still kinda hurts that this Game was "re-skinned" for the west.

I pray for an Re-skin of the Re-skin ;)
greetz, Torti

(T_T)

This is amazing! I just love this Game, its the "Godfather" of this Genre.

The first of its kind. Too bad that it was reskinned for the west.

It lost lots of charme of the original Release (and also lost the "cutscenes)

Thats the Original. You know those Guys from River City Ransom :)
Is there any chance you make a "reskin of the reskin"

and give us the original ?

A 2nd Button Control Option would be also very much appreciated.

Thank you so much Dave for this gem (T_T)

Bless you!

Greetings Torti

Got the game running on my A600 mini. Great fun. I am glad I did not get rid of that little system. Can I suggest Double Dragon next?

Awesome game!

Great game, thanks. My favorite ZX Spectrum game 😊🕹️

My favourite Spectrum game too, I was so disappointed when I first played it on the Amiga, so I was determined to right a wrong with this release.

Good job 👍

Can you make this into a whdload. So, I can play this on my mini or an emulator?

Not sure how to without some research. It is just an executable though so just copy it onto a hard drive image and it should run, or is it a lack of chip mem causing you a problem?

There is now a WHDLoad installer for it. Someone has to package it with the binary and .lha pack it, of course:

https://www.whdload.de/games/RenegadeDaveDouglas.html

We need to wait until the final release

Can some one make a complete whd load so I can fire this up with out having to go through hoops to get to run?

i don't know how to do it, and not sure that the 1.4 release is the final game.
I'm waiting for the LHA too.

I tested the game on  MiST (minimig core) and ApolloV4SA, both fpga system and the screen game is how shifted to the bottom showing 1 line of graphics.

I have a MiSTer so will try it out on that when I get a chance . Quite strange though as unless you select 60hz mode it uses standard video timings. So far I just tested on real hardware (both SCART and Indivision MK2), winuae and fs-uae and they all display fine.

Thanks for the reply, good You own a MiSTer.

Can you try v1.2 to see if it works

(2 edits)

On MiST/SiDi128 now it is ok, only on V4SA I get this:

Thank You very much for the update ;)

It looks likw DISTART and DISTOP are now working (these control the display window and the sprites are correctly lined up). I can only assume the V4SA has a bug in the implementation of 64bit fetches and how these work with bitplane modulos (from the picture it seems like each line is starting from the wrong bitplane pointer address). Are there any known issues with other AGA titles on the V4SA?

I can confirm that this happens on MiSTer too.

Can you try v1.2 to see if it works

It works with 50hz PAL mode, but I just get a black screen in 60hz NTSC mode. It’s not a crash or anything, I can toggle it back to PAL by pressing the button again.

I'll play around with the video timings to try and find a sweet spot for origin hardware and fpga

What is the extension of the file  ? LHA or something else ? because the file is just "renegade"

It's just the executable.

alright thank you for the answer, it will be cool to have an LHA file for emulation

Hi, I'm not sure what you are after. An LHA is just an archive, so once you extracted it you would just have the executable again. To play it on emulation just create a bootable hard drive directory and copy the file in. Once booted to the shell type renegade to play

(3 edits)

Lots of emulation users think “LHA” is a format that is used directly, since the emulators support that. What he’s after is a WHDLoad setup that is packed with LHA. He can then drop that directly into his emulator and not have to deal with Workbench or the command line, since the game will launch automatically.

(1 edit)

thank you lol, this is exactly the use of LHA file, i know this is an archive but the emulation software like WinUAE can use it automatically, just a one click to play the game.
And also you can see that every HB on Amiga have the WHDLoad support this days..

Good job.

But on Saberman's video I found one game logic bug.

When he lost life, full level is restarted.

This is wrong.

Killed enemies are killed.

Hitted boss is hitted (has less energy).

Some graphics glitches (very rare) are visible.

I dont know if this version has only 1 loop.

But if more loops, then this is perhaps world record:

Loop 9-4.

Every loop is hardest than previously.

More hits to some enemies and plus 1 motor bike per loop.

(1 edit)

Hi Don, which version are you playing where the level doesn't restart? I've checked both the US and Japan arcade games and they definitely restart the level with all enemies back to full health.

Can you specify where you saw a graphical glitch so I can double check it. (edit, just seen the one on the floor tile - a naughty write happening where it shouldn't, will try to track it down!).

Thanks

First glitch is visible on Saberman movie about 2 minutes 35 secs.

Second glitch is visible on Saberman movie about 3 minutes (seems to be graphics priority problem).

Sorry, seems I remember something wrong when I played this game, level is fully restarted.

I checked a few movies on YT.

First one is definitely a glitch, second one is more a feature as they are on the same y axis and fighting to be the first to win the race 😁. I think the arcade would display similar behaviour in such a scenario

Awesome!

Many thanks !

superb arcade feel

OOOOOOOOOOOOhhh!!
