One unique mechanic in One Step From Eden is randomly generated upgrades! You can upgrade your favorite Spells with mechanics like Doublecast (fires twice)!
I studied quite a few fighting game character select UIs. Had no idea there were so many iterations of Street Fighter!
I honestly thought most of them were really ugly, so I wanted something simple that communicated:
1. The roster
2. Each player’s character
3. Each character’s abilities
Putting the roster in the center of the screen as a vertical list makes it super easy to scan and take in who is available and who is being chosen. It also allows both players to use a simple line selector on either side. Of course this wouldn’t work if you had a roster of like 20 or more characters.
The blue/red lights original intention was to hide the rest of the selector lines, I eventually made them blue and red to reflect what side of the field the player would be on. This is also shown via diamonds in the background on the results screen.

The Blackout spell covers the screen in darkness and slashes enemies one by one! It was inspired by the Isolation boss in the Dreamscaper demo which you can try here!
